What are your 10 Favorite and 5 least favorite animes?
Don't know if I can do a top ten, but a list of my favorites (kept to series I've seen at least 3/4 of) looks like this:
Top 3: Cowboy Bebop. Love the art, the character designs, the overall structure to the series (mixing single episode stories with an over-arcing general plotline), the directing--the whole anime as cinema thing has knocked me flat since I first saw it years ago. It's one of the few series I've seen that I feel is actually directed with consideration to style and story; most shows go for just one.
Samurai Champloo. All of the same reasons I list for Bebop, plus I like the actual characters (not just the way they're drawn) in SC somewhat better than I do CB's. I think they're currently tied for first place in my world.
Trigun. I like shows that aren't afraid to be a bit goofy, particularly ones that are also serious. Good characters, fun mix of westerns and outer space, and some parts that are as sad as they get.
Lupin III. And then there are goofy shows that aren't afraid to be serious... Love the characters, the comraderie between them, and the fact that tv specials are still being made.
..that's the top four. The rest of the best varies considerably, depending on what day of the week it is, apparently. It always contains Outlaw Star (the show the lured me back into anime after a fifteen year hiatus).
Least favorites include (but are not limited to): Wolf's Rain. No pacing, flawed plotting, no characterization other than a quick sketch of each character. But still, far better than
Kikader. Just flat bored me. But, I'd rather watch it than be in the same room with
Blue Gender. Unpleasant end to end. Too high a body count, too many bugs, no characters I liked at all. Better than Super Milk Chan, but not by much.
But my all time least favorite is Saint Seiya. Sure, the guys are all pretty cute, but other than that, why? This was the show that drove me away from anime decades ago, when I had two roommates who were totally obssessed with it--years before it was ever translated into English. It was bad then, and it's bad now.
What are your 10 Favorite and 5 least favorite animes?
Top 10 Favorite Anime TV Series/OVAs
1) Cowboy Bebop - This is my absolute favorite anime series. I love everything about it. The animation and art is unique. The music and sound effects are excellently suited, and what's more, spectacular. The main characters are unforgettable. The story knows exactly which buttons to press and when and climaxes in a beautiful, painful finale. Enjoyment? Massive enjoyment. Value? It will forever hold a place in my memories as a true accomplishment of animated story-telling.
2) Full Metal Alchemist - I came into this show not knowing what to expect. I'd been told it was spectacular, but I was skeptical. But it was a near-instant favorite. After the first episode I knew (if it kept up that quality) I was going to love it. I like that even though it has a huge cast of characters, it makes good use of nearly all of them. And it has little if any filler. And when you think it can't get any better, it does. And then it does it again! It's rare to find an anime like that, that not only doesn't spoil it's greatness after 40+ episodes, but actually gets even better!
3) Mobile Suit Gundam - The characters in this show are unforgettable. The charasmatic Char Aznable, the stern Bright Noa, the honorable Ramba Ral. These are the archetypes for all the Gundam characters that came after. The story is gripping and intelligent, far beyond its giant robot toy merchandising (an aspect of the show that supposedly irked Tomino). A true anime classic.
4) Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam - It's hard to express how I feel about this series. I'm still recovering from my first viewing, weeks ago. When the smoke clears, it'll probably surpass the original series. It's really epic and I enjoy the battles and poltical/emotional turmoil, but there's a hell of a lot to keep track of. Like FMA, this show stays great even past the 40 episode mark and gets even better. It was well worth the price I paid for the boxset, even with the boxset's problems.
5) Neon Genesis Evangelion - Pen Pen. 'Nuff said.
6) Bubblegum Crisis - Bubblegum Crisis is the definition of "cyberpunk" to me. It's a dark, atmospheric, and gritty ride through post-apocalyptic Tokyo, where apparently the 80s never went out of style! But big hair can be forgiven for some solid music and some pretty cool battles. The characters are endearing, though none of them are as fleshed out as Priss Asagiri, who easily steals the show. Voiced by singer Kinuko Ohmori, Priss exerts the right amount of emotion and depth to make her an unforgetable anime icon. Hell, with those hardsuits, I'd say all four Knight Sabers are icons.
7) Now and Then, Here and There - Heavy. Very, very heavy. Very dramatic. There are moments in this show that made my heart ache and parts which made it stop. Not for fans of mindless action, Now and Then, Here and There is a powerful show about the indomitable spirit of Shu in a world that knows no peace. Anyone with the slightest good in them suffers. The art and animation are simple and the music is mostly timid, but all of it forms something greater than the sum of its parts.
8) Macross Plus - A visual and audio feast with some nostalgia for Macross attached. Macross Plus used to be my all-time favorite anime, and stayed in that position for a long time. I still really, really love this OVA and it's movie version, as well. The story seems more natural and familiar at each period I watch it in, as if I can understand the feelings in it better as I mature. Not as epic as I once thought, perhaps, but I feel more attached to it now emotionally.
9) Gundam 08th MS Team - A grittier, more natural look at war with giant robots. Gundam at its OAV best. Though the romance between Shiro and Aina seems rushed, it's nonetheless endearing. There's also something to be said about the political situations and down-and-dirty battle scenes. Oh, and the music was great, too. It had a true feeling to it. Exploring what war brings to the surface, the power of love, the strength of teamwork, the desire to do the right thing, this Gundam doesn't leave me feeling empty and tired. The Gundams in this aren't the invincible monsters in Gundam Wing. They malfunction, break down, are destroyed. They are only as good as the human pilots. I found myself understanding both sides, both Federation and Zeon, and rooting for both at times.
10) The Big O - The Big O is reminiscant of the "super robot" era of anime, ressurected in a fashion that might remind anime fans of the show Giant Robo. I love the mysterious nature of this show. Trying to unravel the meaning behind the missing memories and the origin of Paradigm City is part of the fun of the show. The music is very snappy and jazzy, all the pieces fitting in perfectly. The battles, although predictable, are fun to watch.
Movies are a whole other story (and in fact, I should probably put TV series and OVAs in two different catagories). I usually keep a steady list of favorites (I have way too much time on my hands!) but I haven't been able to update my movie favorites in a while.
Bottom 5 (Not really... just five anime I particularly dislike, but can't decide which I hate more) Least Favorite Anime TV Series/OVAs
*These don't include obviously bad anime like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, which are commercials for their respective products and targeted for children, and therefore, not meant to be good.
.hack//SIGN - .hack//SIGN is like one, long, boring, pointless conversation in beautiful scenery with even more beautiful music. It's well-animated, the character designs are nice, the story *concept* is decent, the potential is there, but it's flat. There's no point to it and at the end it leaves you feeling empty. It's hard to care about the plight of poor Tsukasa, because he's dull and mopey with random spurts of insane confidence (due to befriending a blob thing that takes out his enemies). It's hard to care about anyone other than Sora, who is brash and scheming, but has the only personality in the whole series. As for as the conclusion, where is it? What is it?
Witch Hunter Robin - A pointless snore-fest with aggravatingly stupid characters. One even chases a hobo out into the street (where said hobo is hit and killed) and nobody thinks twice about it. Nice. The only character I liked was Nagira, who tried to protect witches, hung out at a pachinko parlor, supplied information, and was all-around awesome character. Nagira should have his own show. Robin and Amon and the gang were boring.
Reign the Conqueror - Great if you're A) a hardcore Aeon Flux fan or B) love math, but since I was only a casual Aeon Flux fan and hate math, this show just wasn't for me. A lot of psuedo-history, pseudo-philosophy, math theories, incestous undertones, and (mostly) forgettable battles. Not the worst ever, but certainly very, very bad to me.
Cyber City Oedo - Amusing for all the wrong reasons. I especially love watching the English dub, filled with some pretty colorful language. Without the hilariously bad dub, it wouldn't be worth watching at all.
Wolf's Rain - What? How can I hate a "masterpiece" like Wolf's Rain? Well, let me be honest. I don't think it's one of the worst. It's just highly overrated and I wanted to air my greivances. I love the art, animation, atmosphere, music, and some characters, but this show utterly fails in living up to its supposed greatness. Wolf's Rain has heaps of flat, flavorless material and long periods of nothing at all happening. There are several clip episodes in a row, to boot. It's like the creators had this really good idea and already decided on a beginning and ending, but forgot there had to be a middle, too.
I wouldn't be surprised if I got some flack for listing Wolf's Rain, but I'm willing to go into specifics.
*Blink* If you think I'm going to contest you on that, you've assumed incorrectly. People have their own tastes, and I respect that. As I said, I recognize that Wolf's Rain has its flaws. Those flaws just don't happen to bother me, as I have such a personality that tolerates (even enjoys) certain aspects of the series that would bother other people.
You are perfectly entitled to your opinion, and I don't see why anyone should attack you for your personal views. And this comes from as big a Wolf's Rain fan as they come, so... ^^;
What are your 10 favorite and 5 least favorite anime?
When I was a sophomore in high school I got into anime. Ever since then, I've seen so many of them, that this list will be a little hard.
Favorite:
1.Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: All though PGSM isn't anime, I'll consider it anime for this. I got into Sailor Moon during my sophomore year because of someone that rode my bus...who eventually became by best friend. She got me wanting to read the manga and I eventually bought the anime. I like BSSM not only because of the animation but because of the story. Sure, they may defeat the daily monster in every episode but the storyline is really great. I have every season except R and S.
PGSM is even better IMO. The characters are more developed and actually have lives and background stories. The fight scenes may be really cheap and stupid, but I watch it because of the storyline. While watching PGSM, you actually get into the story. I myself, became mostly attached to Minako/Venus/V throughout the course of the season.
2. Green Green: Green Green is such a funny anime. It's very perverted and the characters are hilarious. Though I've only seen the first season, I love this anime. The situations that the characters get into are so unbelievable and would never happen, and that makes it even funnier.
3. Haunted Junction: The anime is GREAT! I bought this without knowing anything about it. The boxset was only $20 on Animenaiton and I had been wanting it for a while, so I thought, "What the hell..." and got it. I started watching it and not only was the opening song good, but so was the animation, characters and storyline. The anime series is only 12 episodes, manga series 13 volumes, and you get attached to the characters.
4. Excel Saga: This is probably the funniest anime I have ever seen. The story has no plot and it's random and that's why I like it.
5. Magic User's Club: I saw the OVA for the first time a long time ago and it made me want to buy the series. I got the entire series with the OVA about a year ago. It's so funny. The OVA is much better than the series, but the series has a lot of funny stuff in it.
6. Colorful: This is so perverted. The whole point of this is to see girls' panties. Everyone should see this though, it's really funny and the opening song is the best.
Now for my least favorites...
1. Dragon Ball Z: This anime is effing retarded. I HATE IT!! It takes 5 episodes to get through 1 effing day. The animation is shitty and square and it's pointless. How long does it take to find stupid balls.
2. Pokemon: The name explains it all.
3. Yu-gi-oh: I hate this anime. My sister watched it one time and I decided to watch it with her. I felt like ripping out my insides and having my next door neighbor eat my entrails...that's how much I hate it.
4. Cowboy Bebop: I don't hate this anime, I just don't care for it. I don't see what the hype is all about. It seemed pretty dumb to me.
5. Anything Mecha

10. Nuku Nuku OVA- who can't love that show
I don't know if I can write 10 favorites or five least favorite titles, so I will list the ones that stand out the most for me. One of the commonalities of my favorites is the music.
Favorites: GTO- I thought I was going to pick up Onegai Teacher, but during the day I went to buy the anime, I forgot the complete name and only remember "teacher." Seeing the "Teacher" in GTO, I picked up the first two DVDs and went home to watch them. Little did I know that I got the wrong titles, but I didn't care I enjoyed GTO. Coincidentally at work, I found five volumes of GTO laying on the ground when I was doing work and purchased them too (at a 40% discount...wah hoo!). I also read, coincidentally yet again, Animerica's issue with GTO on the cover. In the article it mentioned that GTO displayed issues that is in Japanese schools, and in a history text book on Japan ( I finished the history text in three days). I was like, "Wow." Being that I study Psychology and Sociology, I figured to check out GTO more closely, and hence I found my number one love for an anime, manga, and live action drama. Great character development. Except for the live action, the Anime version of GTO's music wasn't one of the reasons why I love GTO so much.
Twelve Kingdoms This was a suggestion to purchase from another friend, and this time I wrote down the title so I wouldn't forget. But it was kind of hard to forget at Suncoast because during my walk inside, they were playing a promo of the anime. What got me immediately, was not the anime, itself, but the music. Being an avid fan of Chinese/Asian instrumental music, it hooked and sunk me into getting the series. I didn't watch it right after I purchased it since I am still in school, but I did get time to watch the first two DVDs sequentially. And boy did I like it. It was very reminiscent of the old Chinese/Vietnamese movies that my parents watched. Or actually reminiscent of a drama that I watched with my parents when I was very little. And being that I enjoy fantasy and romance, this anime was next in line to be one of my favorites. I like Youko's development into being an emotionally developing adept adolescent. Of course I felt that she was a whiner in the first three DVDs of the series, but she grew on me. I want to series to continue for a long time, as well, I would like to get the manga or novels if they come out in the US.
Macross Plus My very first and favorite anime. Yoko Kanno is a wonderful musician and composer. I make it my duty to get any anime in which she was the composer. But back to the actual anime of MAcross PLus. I was at the age where impressions and imagination was still important in my life, and I saw this with it's fighters and UN spacey. I got into so much trouble the next day in school when I kept on daydreaming what it would be like flying one of those jets in Macross PLus. Guld's portrayal of the tragic hero was excellent. Even though it was short, it was still a great anime to watch...over and over and over. Plus you get a real great music soundtracks to listen to.
Cowboy Bebop As I said in MAcross PLus, anything with Yoko Kanno composing, I have to get. Cowboy Bebop was the next one on the list to get. Her jazzy swank music is just great to listen to to relax, get into the mood, and feel energetic. I didn't care much for the story, even interesting as it was, I cared more about the style and the music, above all. The music was the key to my love of this series. And what do you know, I am listening to Cowboy Bebop right now.
Ghost in the Shell Some weird, techno-ish music by, none other than Yoko Kanno. Maybe she needs to take a rest....even if we fans yearn for her music daily. Ghost in the Shell, was one of those rented because "I am too young and didn't want parents to know about" types. I saw this a little bit after Macross PLus with my brother. Being that my parents are the strict type about what we watch, Ghost in the Shell was one they didn't want us to watch. Or me really, because I was still young and very impressionable. So I snuck out and watched it with my brother. It was cool. It is a cool anime because of its slickness. And what do you know, today we are getting somewhat closer to what Ghost in the shell portrayed. A highly connected society through computers.
Tenchi Muyo I watched this at my neighbor's house as I took care of their pet dog, Rusty. I would watch this every time I was called to take care of her house, garden, and pet, sometimes at weeks to months at a time. Sure it was a simple harem anime, but it was an addictive one. It was like a mix of Star Wars (My favorite movie series.....with Indiana Jones coming in a close second) and some other show that I can' remember. I watched the OVA, TV series (Universe), and the three movies every day when I would come home from school. This excludes Tenchi in Tokyo. this was the first Anime that I actually bought in VHS format. Its occasional silliness, but fun at the same time, made it easy to like and remember.
Escaflowne What can I say, I really love Yoko Kanno. I really love her music as well. Just like Twelve Kingdoms, I really liked this anime because of its fantasy/romance genre. I watched the movie before the series, and I love both. I don't care if the movie doesn't follow the TV series to a "T," it is still great.
Honorable mentions in the positive favorites:
Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, Wolf's Rain, El Hazard, Full Metal Panic!, and Ah! My Goddess.
Not so liked Animes:
I don't know if I will go into detail for this but....
Tenchi in Tokyo What did they do to Tenchi in this version? Sakuya? After the first two episodes on my VHS versions of Tenchi in TOkyo, I left it and never picked it up ever again. It wasn't fun seeing the characters that I have grown to love become oddly annoying and tenchi falling for a puppet.
...I think that is the only anime that I don't like.
What are your 10 Favorite and 5 least favorite animes?
Here's mine...
10) Revolutionary Girl Utena - I watched this when we had an Utena marathon at a friend's house, and at first I figured I wouldn't like the show because I didn't really care for the character designs and the series just wasn't all that appealing, but I was wrong, this show turned out to be a lot better than I originally thought, and being a fan of Sailor Moon the fact that it was done by the same director probably helped too...
9) Sailor Moon - This was the first anime TV series that I was hooked on, while the monster of the week theme does get rather repetitive, this is probably one of the few series I watched when I was yound that I can still watch to this day without getting disgusted after just a couple of episodes...
8) Tenchi Muyo! (OVA/Universe/GXP/Movies) - A friend got me hooked on these, and while the series doesn't grab me as much as it once did, it's still one of the early ones that got me hooked on the romantic comedy genre of anime, I love the characters, the comedy (especially in GXP) and I do like the storylines
7) Kare Kano - This is another series I like, the characters are great and I like the comedy and stuff in it, though I don't like where the series ended, it still was a great series that deserves it's recognition...
6) Naruto - While do love the manga and show of this to death, it's just fallen off for me recently, I just can't keep up with these long running series anymore, after Sailor Moon and DBZ, the series that are hundreds of episodes long just seem to get way too much of a hastle to watch and they are especially expensive to buy, but overall, my big draw in Naruto are the characters, I just love the a back story has been worked out of each character, and I think Kishimoto has just done an awesome job with the series to this point...
5) Detective Conan/Case Closed - Ignoring my remarks in the previous post about long running series, this is just one of the series I love to watch simply to see if I can figure out how did it before Conan/Shinichi, though the main plot doesn't move along all that quickly the series still does a pretty good job of keeping you entertained in each episode by offering up a new mystery
4) Fullmetal Alchemist - While I don't think this series lives up to all the hype, it's still a great series. It's got some great characters, storylines, music, ect. I've enjoyed all the episodes I've seen so far, and ignroing the filler the TV series is just as good as the manga, though either way...I still hated the ending of episode 25...
3) Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories - This is the best Gundam series hands down, it's good, and it gets straight to the point. While the characters weren't the greatest in the series, the storyline was great and it just made sense that it was happening...
2) Ah! My Goddess (TV/OVA/Movies) - This is still one of my favorite series, and has been even since I saw the OVA. Keiichi and Bell are one of the greatest anime couples, and it's good to still see them even today in the new AMG TV series, and while the series has aged a bit I'm also happy to see that it's still accepted and liked by the fans
1) Air - I don't know why, but this anime grabbed me in the first episode and I just fell in love with it, and yes I relieze it's only been 3 episodes and I know I'm probably taking a risk by listing it as my favorite anime, but seeing as how the show has such a great storyline and so far I love all the chracter (especially Haruko) and the animation is just beautiful. The episodes do love to leave you with cliffhangers, but of course that just makes me want to keep watching, and so far I haven't seen one thing bad about this series...
That's my faves, and well...for honorable mention I gotta say Serial Experiments Lain and Crest of the Stars are great series too
Least Favorite animes...
5) Dragonball GT - While I was a big fan of the original and Z when I was younger, GT was just a huge let down. It seems that all Toei did was reuse Toriyama's characters and then made the story up as they went along, oh wait...that is all they did ;p
4) Super Milk-chan - I just didn't like this show, now I'm into the crazy Gainax stuff (in fact I loved Abenobashi and FLCL) but this series, just didn't make any sense, it's almost like the creators had a little too much to drink or had a little too much of something when they were writting this...
3) InuYasha - This show is the same thing week in and week out, as I said earlier on, I grow tired of these long running series, and while I do like the InuYasha movies and some of the characters, I think that Dragonball pretty much ruined any chance of me liking a lot of long running action series, but it's not just that...but it seems like there are only four formulas to an InuYasha episode...
a) they look for a shard, then fight a demon, end episode
b) they look for Naraku, then fight a demon, end episode
c) InuYasha and Kagome argue, Kagome tells him to sit then gets stuck up and runs back home, everyone blams InuYasha for her leaving and they pretty much force him to apologize, Kagome and InuYasha make up, end episode
d) the group runs into Kikyo, InuYasha refuses to fighter her, Kagome gets jealous and depressed, repeat step C for rest of the episode
2) Big O - I just can't get into this show, I've watched the series through and rewatched some episodes on several occassions and I just don't get it, the characters aren't all that great, the anime style is lacking, and the ending just left me more confused then the rest of the series
1) Tenchi in Tokyo - This is by far the worst Tenchi series ever made, and that's why it tops my list, the idea of Tenchi moving off and falling for some other girl just seems stupid, as if he was going to fall for a girl why not one of the original 5, but either way, the storyline in this show is just weak compaired to the other series and in addition they seem to ignore some of the minor characters and focus mainly on Tenchi, Ryoko, Sayuka, and Ayeka.
What are your 10 Favorite and 5 least favorite animes?
My Favorite Animes with no particular order:
1. Noir - a story about 2 assasins Kirika and Mireille.
An action packed series with a couple of sentimental episodes like Ep6, "The Lost Kitten".
The killing sequences are stylish - Kirika can kill with anything.
The music is wonderful - every piece of music perfectly matches with the atmosphere of the scene.
The camera works are nice - eg. a shooting inside a printer.
2. Grave of the Fire Flies - a story about 2 ophans Seita and Setsuko.
The saddest flim ever created in my opinion. Once you watch this film, you won't forget it. The emotional impact was so strong that the sadness had stayed with me for at least 2 days. This film is the gem of Anime.
3. R.O.D OAV - a short stylish action packed series about 2 super-powered agents Yomiko Readman "The Paper" and Nancy Makuhari "Ms Deep".
Americans have Superman, Sipderman, Batman and X-men but now the Japanese have Readman. It is already interesting to see papers in a magician's hand and papers in Yomiko's hand....
4. Perfect Blue - a thriller about an idol Mima Kirigoe and a fan. The first time I watched this anime, I was as hallucinated as Mima. The film sucessfully confused me. I need to watch it a second time in order to seperate scenes of hallucination and reality. It is hard to imagine that one will get a weird experience of hallucination through watching instead of smoking.
This anime did it.
5. My Neighbor Totoro - a warmth and imaginative story about 2 sisiters and a fluffy creature Totoro.
A family anime which is much much better than any family features from Disney. The music are so good that one may want to collect them. The vivid depiction of the children in this film deserves to be another gem of anime.
That is it for now. If I have time, I may list more.
Actually, most of the Miyazaki's works are my favorites.
What are your 10 Favorite and 5 least favorite animes?
I've only been an anime fan for 2 years, but from what I have watched, these were my favourites from what I have seen from 6 to 1.
6. Crayon Shinchan
This series sure takes me back to the time where I was 7 years old when I started watching it. It was Cantonese-dubbed and it was a great show at my age. Too bad the Western society don't quite understand Eastern humour and fail to see how good this series is actually in the eyes of a kid. However this is far from the best anime I've seen.
5. Pokemon
This brings me back to primary schooling/early secondary schooling years of around age 12. I too was caught in the Pokemon hype. The series was good until midway through the Johto Journey when CheezTV Australia ran out of new episodes to air, and began the series from the start!! :x I stopped there.
4. Serial Experiments Lain
Number 4 is not bad.. in fact, #1 to 4 are very close together in my favourites...
This I must admit is an intruiging series. I loved Lain's innocence but I had a hard time understanding it the first time through, mosty because of an extremely bad encoding effort by the FanSubs. I will get the boxset DVDs later and understand the theme fully. This series had a KILLER opening theme, Duvet by Boa. The best opening theme with Evangelion's close behind.
3. Chobits
Should've been a series I hate. I really dislike lovey-dovey cutesy animes, but when I read the manga, it seemed like it but also quite opposite, with the pervert protagonist Hideki. It's most beautifully drawn and the quality of the video is astounding. Its also in widescreen! Finally an anime series that fits properly on my widescreen plasma screen! The story isn't as engrossing as Lain but Chii is just the cutest thing! It also had a very good english dub.
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion
This should be no.1 with GTO but I had to give it second due to the fact that everyone dies and the ending itself was hard to understand. This was psychological thriller to the max. Character development happens, but its the detail of the characters have that make this series one of the best of all time. I have the 8 DVD box-set and the first platinum disc with collector's box. Warning, the first time I watched Evangelion, it watched the WHOLE SERIES + MOVIES IN 13 HOURS. Do not attempt at home folks, especially if there are new people to this. It can bore and it can mash up your brains.
1. Great Teacher Onizuka
This is by far the most "normal" anime series. Character development, insane slapstick comedy, drama and Onizuka's super-demented facial expressions make this my favourite series of all time. The only gripe I have against this series is the *horrible* english dub. Some of the voices girl's voices are painful! I own the 10DVD box set, and starting the manga collection now. For those who thought the Anime ending was inadequate, look to the manga... there's a lot of action you're missing!
What are your 10 Favorite and 5 least favorite animes?
Top 10 New Animes/Past animes
10 - Yakitate Japan.
About a guy who hopes that one day he'll be the best artisan and that he creates the best Japan. And my most favorite animes
09 - Whistle!
Well, I never got to see this anime, only just read the manga. But from reading books 1 & 2 of this manga just got me interested.
08 - Soukyuu no Fafner (Fafner in the Blue Azure - Dead Agressor)
Seeing as I'm a fan of scifi-animes, this has to be the best 26-episode scifi anime series of 2004. And the story just developes really nice (even though there can be harsh moments at times).
07 - Wolf's Rain
This anime (along with Ryvius) gets my vote of one of the best animes to have great acting. Considering that it's coming from Bandai. I would expect no less from them.
06 - Gundam SEED: Destiny
This sequel, unlike last year's SEED. Went off to a harsh start. But as the story picked up it was great.
05 - Soul Hunter
Well, I must admit that the acting didn't go too well as I had expected. Though, I was kinda interested in the chinese story. And most notable there was a certain character that got me interested in watching (or reading the manga), which their names were; Taikoubou-dono, Ko Hikou, Tenka & Nataku.
04 - My Hime
This anime was interesting (as it was hilarious). About a story of "himes" (or princesses) protecting people, due to Oufans attacking.
03 - School Rumble
I like how they would add those parodies in this random-type of anime. Like in early episodes you'd see parodies of the Matrix, Initial D & Sleeping Beauty .
02 - Beck
No list would be complete without seeing this anime. It's interesting to see Koyuki's transformation from earlier episodes to his recruit to Beck.
01 - either Bleach or Harukanaru: Toki no Naka de -Hachiyoshou-
These following animes would be my least favorite, due to poor acting, bad intro etc...
5 least favorite
- One Piece (4Kids - FOX BOX)
- Sonic X (4Kids - FOX BOX)
- Fullmetal Alchemist (FUNimation - Cartoon Network's Adult Swim)
- F Zero GP Legend (4Kids - FOX BOX)
- Shaman King (4Kids - FOX BOX)
What are your 10 favorite and 5 least favorite anime?
This is the first message I've put on this message board but here we go. Just so you all know the first two on my list are ranked the rest aren't. I will not mention Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Studio Ghibli movies, or Ninja Scroll because it is assumed that they are great. I will also only rank shows that I have seen all or three-quarters of.
1. Neon Genesis Evagelion(including Death and Rebirth and The End of Eva)-what can I say about eva that people already haven't. nothing probably but I will say that it starts out as a regular mach show and then expands into something much more.(My Favorite artistic anime)
2. Gudam-Any show w/ the name Gundam I will watch(except SD Gundam from a couple years ago) The mech series to end all mech series. The pinnicle of all mechs.(technically my favorite non-artistic anime)
3.RahXephon-Eva w/ all questions answered, which is why it doesn't rank in the top two.
4.Cowboy Bebop-The best retro-future series ever made. Everything just came together for this series.
5.Trigun-The retro-future series that resembles it's genre name the most.Besides Vash is awesome.
6.Outlaw Star-not as good of a retro future series as the other two in the genre but still good none the less
7.Escaflowne-It's just so epic, who could deny it's greatness?
8.Gasaraki-Take Eva and Gundam and smash them together and you got Gasaraki.
9.Crest/Banner of the Stars-it's a nice change of pace for usual anime. They explain in 13 episodes what other shows would show in half that number.
10.Full Metal Panic-mecha show that breaks from convention. A funny moment followed immediately by a deathly serious moment.
And now my least favorite/hated.
1.Super Milk Chan-can't stand it
2.Inuyasha-more repetitive than DBZ
3.Poke'mon-fun games but horrible shows.
4.Beyblade-the premise just sounds horrible
5.Demon city Shinjuku-too old and not as good as it could be.
Enjoyable entertainment with some interesting characters. While the story does get a little odd at at times (i.e. Episode 7 of R.O.D. the TV), the characters are very well done ... if a little too book-crazy. (Seriously, Yomiko's building full of books and the Paper Sister's Hong Kong apartment? They need credit card counseling. )
9. .hack//SIGN
While it was only the precursor to bigger things to come, this series is also self-contained and really doesn't need what comes after to still be a great piece of storytelling in a computer gameworld setting.
It's great how all of the "heroes" in the story aren't really medieval heroes in a fantasy world -- all of them are just ordinary people living in the real world. I've heard a lot of comments about them ("they are all whinny"), but they are just people -- you, me, anyone else in the world, really. It's this simple fact that makes .hack//SIGN relatable to many people.
8. Perfect Blue
This one had me both confused and frightened -- just as direct Satoshi Kon probably expected me to be. If there were any one-liner to describe this, it would be a "descent into madness".
I've had those few lingering questions, like
why is it that Mima continues to see Rumi as herself? Does Rumi have some sort of psychic powers? It's never revealed, so all we do have to go on is that Mima is just going nuts. But then, at the end, she's fine. Everyone's fine.
Well, whatever. It's still an edge-of-your-seat movie, to be sure -- and one classic horror movie at that.
7. Noir
While there is that whole "name of an ancient fate" story arc that progesses throughout, the beginning of the story is quite simple: a pair of assassins team up to eliminate targets and earn their money -- sort of a flipped coin, with Cowboy Bebop on the other side.
After all, you have the same realistic firearms (Mireille and Jet both use a Walther P99), the criminal past that is being left behind (Mireille and Spike), forgotten pasts (Faye and Kirika), and the eventual nemesis who stays behind the scenes most of the time (Vicious and Chloe).
Noir's flashback story bogs it down a little (especially in the first five or six episodes), but stick with it and you will find a great series with an ending that might leave things open for more...
6. Magic Knight Rayearth
Three ordinary girls journey across a fantasy land to save a world from destruction. So, why is this #6 on my list? Because the story is just that unordinary.
The companions are all different people with different goals in life -- but they are brought together by circumstance and become close-knit companions whose friendship and integrity define them as true heroes.
You will be here mainly for the journey, which must be watched from beginning to end to enjoy the story fully. You may think you know how the story is going to end ... but I'll let you see that for yourself.
5. Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight
I put the TV series above the Record of Lodoss War OAV collection on my list mainly because there is a lot more story here that doesn't have the rushed feeling of the OAV. (The best way to start the TV series is to watch the OAV up to Episode 8 ["Requiem for Warriors"], then begin the TV series.)
The first part of the TV series begins after the War of Heroes. Here, we get a lot more character development from everyone -- Parn learns more about being a hero, Ashram becomes a more dynamic enemy, and Kashue's influence on them both drive both throughout the TV series. Another bright point is that Orson and Shiris' story is expanded in a great way.
The next part deals in the story of a new generation of heroes, and brings the ending of the OAV back into the story with all-new twists.
For me, it's the best version of the Lodoss War story, succeeded (unfortunately) by one of my Least Favorites below.
4. Inuyasha
This is how an ongoing series should be written. Great comedy and high drama, memorable dynamic characters, a time-travel story that rewrites all the history books, and fresh challenges every episode. So far, after the 70+ episodes that have been out, the show hasn't lost any of its magic and charm. Couple the TV series and movies with some other great fan media (for North America, the Playstation fighting game and Playstation 2 RPG game, but a lot more in Japan), and you have one timeless classic that anyone can really watch and enjoy.
3. Cardcaptor Sakura
This one would have to stand as the most controversal teen comedy ever created -- that wasn't that convtroversal since it was heavily cut and dubbed to so much change the story that the original's great comedy elements are buried. Getting the uncut version was perhaps one of the best decisions I made -- the taboo relationship stories alone are worth it. Coupled with some interesting action and smart story (every card has a well-thought out weakness that isn't very obvious), this is perhaps CLAMP's best series ever.
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion
The story starts out just like any anime you've seen: giant robot-like creatures clash each other in a titanic battle. But these anti-heroes are the last people you would expect to save the world from domination by the Angels -- the real, Biblical Angels. The character match-up is the oddest I've ever seen: A cool and calculating girl who could care less about anyone but their commander; an introverted boy who just pilots the Evangelion "because that's what everyone expects him to do"; and a red-haired wild-child who only wants to pilot the Evangelion and have fun.
As the show moves on, though, you begin to realize that things are not the same. Each of the characters' egos are challenged by what they experience. Then you have The End of Evangelion, which is the most mind-blowing experience I've ever seen. On top of all of that are so many secrets and revelations that you don't realize (until you view the TV series again) how much they really were telling you from the start. This series deserves being called one of the best.
1. Cowboy Bebop
This is the big one, that one series out of all the others that anyone can watch all the way through and enjoy. I've been told that this series turned a lot of people on to anime -- and it's easy to see why. The open-ended story, the bounties, the exploration of the pasts of every character, and the main arc that revolves around Spike's dark past -- everything is paced so wonderfully.
Bebop features perhaps the best music of any anime -- one of the big reasons why Bebop is above Noir, which I mentioned was similar in style. The music is appropriate everywhere you hear it. The characters are the most oddball bunch you'd ever see -- the dark hero, the ex-cop, the con-lady, the computer hacker, and the high-IQ dog. Somehow, they all really do work together and become a very close family -- even though they won't admit it at all.
The Real Folk Blues has to be the best ending to any series I've ever seen. It wonderfully resolves a great series, which few series' ending really do well.
My all-time favorite that I never tire of watching again and again.
(Note that if it were considered anime, Transformers would also be on this list. The orignal seasons were great, and Transformers: The Movie is still the best earth-shattering transition moment of any major animated series.)
Glory Questor's Least 5 favorite:
5. .hack//Liminality
I hate when something that looks like it would be great misses the mark. The first episode looks like it was supposed to feature some computer graphics -- but all we get is a monocolored screen that screams "missing footage".
It's a disappointing beginning that leads to a more interesting middle (I like Volumes 2 and 3), but has a really disappointing end (once again, we can't see what's going on in The World). The only question that would be asked is "what was the point of all that?". Now that I look back, just what was Mr. Tokuoka's purpose here? What "evidence" was he trying to get?
4. Legend of Lemnear
The Champion of Gold captures the Champion of Bronze, and it is up to the Champion of Silver, Lemnear, to save Bronze from Gold. Why do I feel like I'm in an olympic triathlon? Seriously, this one is a great premises that seems to have been rushed -- resulting in a fair anime that had enough material to be a wonderful anime. With such a far-reaching story, though, you need more time to tell it. 60 minutes is not enough for this story -- it needs more backstory.
3. Kimera
Ugh. Just why is the main character attracted to Kimera? Just why can't he listen to his best friend? Just what is the story here? I haven't seen this in a long time, and probably won't drag it out ever again.
2. Vampire Wars
Woah! Slow down the story here! Some guy gets involved in this wierd conspiracy that turns into him meeting wierd vampires and at the end
he confesses his love for the girl -- but hasn't spent more than a day with her! :?
I didn't think a story could get more confusing than this one. I was wrong.
1. Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer
Um, yeah. The guy is being attacked by the Class Presidents, who merge into a super being and almost kill the guy -- while his "best friend" just sits back and lets it happen. Then some other transfer student comes in, who has a fire dog, and who falls in love with the rich girl, a man who has a grudge against the president of the school who is hiding all the negativity of the universe inside of him...
If anyone can make some sort of watchable story out of all of this, I'd be surprised.
We're getting "best" and "favorite" muddled here. The distinction is important because, for me, an anime title can certainly be one without being the other. (Case in point: I regard Grave of the Fireflies as one of the best titles I've ever seen but certainly wouldn't consider it among my favorites.)
These are the picks I would rate highly on both "best" and "favorite" lists:
Movies
Akira
It's a classic for a good reason. Arguably the best purely cel-based artistry and animation to be found in any anime movie as well as presenting a mind-bending story, mind-blowing action, and one of the best anime soundtracks ever.
Princess Mononoke
There are other titles that edge it out in artistry, but it's still a visual marvel and, IMO, the best overall anime movie to date. Certainly one of the best and most original stories amongst all anime titles, with thrilling action and a stellar soundtrack to boot.
Perfect Blue
Again, there are titles that edge it out in artistic quality, but the creepy mind-games in this taut pyschological thriller keep me coming back. Very definitely R-rated, though.
Spirited Away
Yeah, this one skews more towards younger audiences, but it's still a fantastic movie by any standards. One of the best-looking and most inventive of all anime movies, and with a great story as well.
Voices of a Distant Star
Technically it's a short, and it isn't in the company of the above in terms of visual quality, but this 25-minute love story about maintaining connections across long distances is one of the most heartfelt of all anime stories. Also features incredible musical scoring.
Series
Key The Metal Idol
Hey, there's a reason why I use the title character as my avatar. This mature, serious 15-episode drama about a socially inept robot girl's efforts to accumulate the 30,000 friends she needs to become human is one of the best-written, most original, and most engrossing titles available in the American market. It features great music, one of the all-time great anime villains, and dark revelations late in the series that will both astound the viewer and force a reevaluation of everything you've seen so far. The artistry, though more ordinary, uses a few subtle and clever touches that are easily overlooked but form highly significant plot points. (Watch Key's appearance very carefully throughout the series.)
Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden
This 12-episode series from GAINAX is one of those rare titles where a collection of stock characters, scenes, and story elements come together to make a whole that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Although this story about a cute female combat android who retires from active duty to spend her remaining 398 days as a maid for an orphaned middle-schooler is primarily a raucous comedy (and a very funny one at that), it has an underlying sadness, some sobering subtexts, and a surprisingly tender side which set it apart from all other robot-maid series. It is even occasionally a real tear-jerker. Fair warning: this series is notorious for its fan service and raunchy content. The follow-up season, subtitled Something More Beautiful, is too bloated with filler to make this list but does a great job of finishing the original storyline when it finally gets around to it.
Neon Genesis Evangelion
If you don't already understand why I'd put this series on this list then you need to see this series for yourself. Definitely one of the most intense, influential, controversial, and multilayered of all anime series, as well as one of the most distinctive of all mecha series. Multiple viewings and research is required to fully understand and appreciate it, I think, and yeah, I like the original ending as well as the movie ending.
Twelve Kingdoms
A 49-episode fantasy series ground in Chinese Mythology which is most distinctive for the fascinating world it creates and its gorgeous artistry, especially in character design. Although the plot does move along at a leisurely pace, this allows for a more full exploration of the world and for its characters to grow and change substantially over the course in time. One of the best modern fantasy series.
Scrapped Princess
This 24-episode fantasy series from BONES, about a "scrapped" princess who must live and travel incognito because she was prophecized at birth to be the "poison who will destroy the world" when she turns 16, isn't available in the States yet but has been licensed and should start coming out in the first half of next year. Great characters, an interesting story with some real twists, and healthy dollops of magic, swordplay, humor, and heartfelt emotion make this a fresh and highly entertaining series.
Honorable mentions among series include Inuyasha, Saikano, Last Exile, Boogiepop Phantom, and Now and Then, Here and There (which doesn't make my list because, while one of the best series to date, it's a difficult view because of the powerful emotions in it).

Good point. As it is beligerent to
disrepect one for disliking/disaproving of another's "Favorite series"(Ya don't see me thrashing those who unjuistifiably saying how much "Soultaker suks",etc. ) It's that mentality that prepetuates the Fanboy stereotype, yanno.
Anyway, Most of the Animes mentioned in this thread are already among my top faves,That and i have too many perenial favorites to list in the top ten order..maybe a top 50 list would suffice.
What are your 10 Favorite and 5 least favorite animes?
Well, what can I say? The only anime I have ever been exposed to was all on Cartoon Network. So, I don't have 10 favorite or 5 least, but I'll do my best.
Favorites
1. Cowboy Bebop - GREAT, GREAT series. It had great action sequences, and like everyone else has said, the music was dead on. The "story" was the best I have ever seen in any series, book, movie, whatever. (I love the end fall in "The Ballad of Fallen Angels")
2. Trigun - I loved this show because of the perfect mix of action and humor. It gives you a little bit of his history and then keeps you guessing about Vash the whole way through until the very end. I liked the villians, because they're not what you expect (the end of Legato). I also loved the humor. One of the funniest shows I've seen.
3. Inuyasha - I loved this series instantly also because of the terrific battle scenes and the intelligent humor thrown in. The characters all have their own special abilities and their own interesting (and interlocking) stories. Extremely well written, interesting from front to.... um, the latest episode.
4. FullMetal Alchemist - haven't seen enough episodes to give a good review, but so far, it is great.
5. Ghost in the Shell SAC - same as FullMetal Alchemist
Least Favorite (just one)
1. Hamtaro - um, yeah. When I first saw an episode, I hated my eyes for a week. And my ears. I just could not believe that someone would take the time to create a world just for hamsters. It's not so bad that it is about hamsters, but there was no point to any of the episodes I saw. They tried to go some place and back, then they tried to find some seeds, then they talked to new hamsters about stuff. And there was a girl who owned one of them, and she was talking to the hamster. That's pretty much all i saw in the few episodes. Boring, and pointless.

2.ok this one is a tie since i could not decide first
Full metal alchemist - at first this anime looks like your run of the mill made for 12 and up show but as the show goes on it takes a turn for a more dark and gritty turn with great visual's and a good story as well as indepth charactor background
the other show is
Inuyasha- ok i know some fans bash this show but it has a good story line great visual, sound the down side alot of the ep you could go with out
ok and my number 1 is ........
.hack// (all the series) - what i mean is the games and shows and oav's i like this show for it very indepth storytelling it massive char bios and how it not reduced to just 26 ep of the same char but spans over serval oav's anf games to give the full info on the world to me this is a must have anime
ok now for the worst
5.case closed - ok to me i dislike and this is me , big headed people with small bodys with what i call redone anime which means it been done before is not to my liking
4.Lupin the 3rd - once again i dislike anime with char that are way way over slapsticky in appearance and in there gesures i don't care if you have a good story line it wont make it any better now if they did this every now and then then mabey but as it stands no
3. Gundam - ok as i sayed earlyer i dislike robot animes and any animes that is nothing but robots so that just me what much can i say it a taste in anime i mean i grew up with transformers ok that was cool to me the giant robots saving the earth was done along time ago i just grew out of the robot thing
2.BIg o - ok another robot anime and is it just me or does this show look like the older batman anime series mabey it just me the only good about this show that i like is the opener music it rocks other than that nothing for me here
and the number 1
Dragon ball z - yes i said it dragon ball z it too long the story just drags no one dies and if they do they come back so what the point i will give it has alot of fighting and over done intros but other than that no for me
well there my post rip apart a much you like, i don't mind really these are just my few cents on what i like
10 favorite and 5 least favorite anime? [Read first 2 Po
In no particular order.
1. InuYasha: My favorite. Eventhough it was a little long with a lot of filler, this show has everything. Some episodes are funny and some have a lot of action.
2. Cowboy Bebop: Really needs no explanation.
3. Dragonball Z: Although most people really don't seem to like it I think it is one of the best action shows I've ever seen. Plus it seems like no matter what the situation I can relate it to Dragonball Z.
4. Trigun: One thing I like about this show is how for the first half it's really funny and for the second half it's dead serious. Pretty good action as well.
5. Fullmetal Alchemist: Good story, good characters, and decent fight scenes. Winry is a great character, every episode with her in it is funny.
6. Ranma 1/2: Probably the funniest series I've ever seen. It seems that almost every time I watch this someone walks in and sees boobs on the screen. A little embarassing.
7. .Hack//Sign: Really good story but can be slow at times. I love the music and how it relates to the games and other .Hack series.
8. Street Fighter 2: Really good movie. One of the few good animes based on games.
9. Akira: Probably the best anime movie ever made.
10. Rurouni Kenshin: Probably has the best fight scenes I've ever seen in an anime. That and I seem to like all the characters, especially Kenshin.
