What are your 10 Favorite and 5 least favorite animes?

Here's my list (although I'm not sure if I can really prioritize the top "10" in any order):

Top 10 (again, in no particular order):

Last Exile - Excellent animation (appears to also have some CG stuff in it). Although the ending left me a little disappointed (don't want to spoil it for anyone)

Witch Hunter Robin - Animation and sound done very well. I also like anime with a "mystical" theme to it. Also had a very good progression of "secrets" involved of the storyline.

Noir - Okay, so this would be my #1. The music rocks. I even went out and bought the 3 CD set. Animation done very well. I really liked the storyline that gave you just a little bit of uncovering the past in each episode. I'd like to see the series continue somehow.

Hellsing - Pretty good, but the ending seemed a little lacking (again, don't want to spoil the ending). I also like anime with "vampire" themes.

Escaflowne - I've not seen the entire series yet, just up to DVD #4. But what I've seen so far I really enjoy. I like the mystical portion of it.

Full Metal Panic - Again, only up to DVD #4, but the animation seems fairly good and I'm curious to find out what all the "whispered" are about.

Vampire Hunter D - I've not seen bloodlust, but again, I like vampire type anime, even though the animation in this series is a bit dated.

Orphen - I like "D&D" type anime as well. And was pleased with the ending. Also some of the music was "haunting".

Ghost in the Shell - the FIRST movie and the TV series so far. I just cannot get past the subitltes in "innocence" so I'll just wait and hope that they release a dub version sometime.

Read or Die - both the "original" and the TV series. I just like "magic" type anime, what can I say?


Least favorites:

Evangelion - It was okay until the ending. I was like, "what the hell?" I even rented the "remade" ending (I think it's "end of evangelion". But that only made slightly more sense.

GunGrave - I just couldn't get into it and was more interested in the "now" instead of virtually the entire series being re-hashes of the past.

Wolf's Rain - It was kinda sad and I didn't particularly care for the way the series ended.

1: Furi Kuri
I suppose the main reason that I would put this anime as my number one favorite would be because this is the show that really made me want to watch more anime. To me the animation was beautiful, add in the fact that a majority of the show was hand drawn merely adds to the allure for me. The storyline they had was a very confusing one, but was interesting once you figured out the general idea. And the mix of humor and action was a real treat(has some of the best battle scenes in my opinion). It also helped that it had a real good soundtrack(yay for the Pillows).

2: Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu?
Now I haven't watched the original Full Metal Panic, but this series has made me want to watch it. I thought this series was hilarious. And the romance aspect that they fit in is touching(makes you say "awe"). I know this isn't very much to say about my second pick but the main thing about this anime is that it is real funny without being too random, like Excel Saga.

3: Samurai X
What can be said about this OVA series, especially Reflection? To me there are only two ways you can end a romance: either a happy ending or DEATH. Between the awesome battles, which they bothered to draw unlike the first season of the TV series, to the tear jerking tragedy, this anime is the perfect example of how these types of storylines should be done.

4: Love Hina
Now this romantic comedy was light hearted in comparison to my number 3 pick. The whole "girls beat on guy caught in the wrong place at the wrong time" thing got kind of repetative at times, but I forgive it for that(because of things like the Godzilla gag). Granted I did enjoy the second to last episode a little more than the last episode, it was still a pretty good ending. And the Christmas special made me and my friends squeal like little girls watching soap operas.

5: Dragonball Z
As Toonami put it "The best action cartoon ever made." Granted it did drag out most of the time, like when they fight for 2 seconds and talk for 15 minutes then fight again(see the battle with Freiza). They upgraded their drawing towards the end of the series and they never failed to put on a good show when Vegeta and Goku fought. Simply put it is a hardcore action cartoon. And I liked it in middle school, which would make it one of the first anime I have seen(Sailor Moon being the first).

Disappointment

Now I know I'm going to get alot of heat for this, but to me the ending was a bit dull. I will say that they did a good job with the whole high school romance thing, but in my opinion they could have ended it a bit earlier.
They could've ended it either when they had sex or when she thoguht that thier relationship had come full circle and they didn't need each other anymore. To me they just tried to expand on a couple of other tangents that were just out there(like the sister episode).
I just don't think that it was that great since it was hailed as the best romance.

This is the best that I could come up with in the limited time that I had to make this post. If I had more time I'd write a top 10 and maybe some of these selections would've been more thought out, but here it is.

Top 10 6

1) Mahoromatic
It was really the first actual anime series that I ever purchased a DVD for (thus starting my wallet shrinking habit). I don't think I could have hit more dead center for the best start. Sure, from a really shallow look, you'll see basically a maid fetish and plenty of fanservice. But underneath that lies a deep tragic story of Suguru's loss and Mahoro's relation to that loss and her acts of repentence. Such repentence costs Mahoro her last days, but later, it turns into something much more deep. The ending made me feel like someone skewered me through the heart. Sure, the second half of the series contains a lot of filler and stand-alone holiday episodes, but the last 5 or so episodes cram a mind numbing amount of story in, but just enough to make you appriciate it.

It covers both ends of the spectrum. Laugh out loud comedy, but deep dramatic tragidy as well. I can't stress how much I loved this series.

2) Someday's Dreamers
This series simply makes you feel completely at ease. It masterfully pulls off the "feel good" factor, yet doesn't go unrealistically happy. SD has it's share of conflicts as well. Furthermore, it's really satisfying to see Yume grow characterwise so much in the short run of the series. Whatever it lacks in humor, it more than makes up in the atmosphere of the series. I like also how Mages aren't shown as all-powerful superior beings, and infact, have problems that normal people need not deal with. The soundtrack is a dead on masterpiece as well. the indigo - under the blue sky is thus far, my favorite anime ending theme of all. The rest of the soundtrack is just... incredibly soothing. My only regret of the series is it feels way too short, and that there is still many untied knots by the end (it feels like it could easily have continued, and makes me wonder if it did.)

3) Comic Party
This series just has some undeniable charm that I can't quite put a finger on. Much of the humor is amplified with some moderate knowledge in the world of Anime and Manga. Kazuki's skill with doujinshi really creates a feeling of envy sometimes. Mizuki's personality of the "anti-otaku" is all too familiar, but she still manages to be very likible character, dispite her stance. And I know Taishi is everyone's envy. C'mon. Who can deny Taishi's absoulute coolness? =P

The only thing of this type that is better is the Manga (Kazuki seems a little less emo). =P

4) Azumanga Daioh
Simply put, high school life of a group of girls could never have been more amusing. Everyone's personality, while none of them are very original, are very very well developed. It's creates somewhat of a "feel good" feeling as well. I think it's impossible to not have a favorite character (Osaka reminds me crazily of myself).

5) Scrapped Princess
The OP is just wonderful. Plain wonderful. Aside from that, the story has mainly very good character development, but even better character interaction. The plot twists get stranger as the series progresses, and the characters get more involved. It's rare that any character makes a real "one time appearence" and never shows up again. It's also a series that causes you to question your own morals... and think a bit.

6) Naruto
Whereas DBZ fighting is basically a bunch of incoherent speed lines resulting in someone getting thrown into a mountain, and then the person who threw the other is suprised when the other isn't dead; Naruto's action is if anything, an excuse to create character development. None of the characters feel like "filler" characters (aside from actual filler episodes), and most all of them have some lasting impact that lasts long through the series. Single fights never really drag, and they end when they ought to. But it's all very intresting.

Those are mainly series that I've finished. One series I'll place in the middle here.... is Haibane Renmei. I bought the first volume on basis of very high reccomendations. I can't help but feel that the series went... really... nowhere. Well, that's not true... it did go places, but not in very intresting ways. I'm very hesitant to call it a "bad" anime, but it certainly isn't up with my top animes. I bought volume two short after, but I couldn't help but feel that I bought it more out of obligation than anything else.

Worst ever.....

1) Duel Masters
Absurdly stereotypical character designs, check. Really crappy 3d intergration, check. Most unbelieveible lines and quotes, check. This series is basically everything that possibly can go wrong in anime, all going wrong. It hurt. Bad.

2) DBGT
Dispite the fact that the series should have died a long long time ago, and that the fight scenes are still incoherent speed lines with man throwing man into mountain, then seeing the other guy emerge and then first man looks suprised, the Dub theme song is a bloody sin. I don't even really hate dubs, but the theme song is just a bloody sin. It's an abomination. Once you hear it, you'll be forcing yourself to hate this series.

Ok. I'm gonna die of sleep deprivation. I probably have more... but I can't remember... so whatever.
 
I don't know if I can write 10 favorites or five least favorite titles, so I will list the ones that stand out the most for me. One of the commonalities of my favorites is the music.

Favorites:
GTO- I thought I was going to pick up Onegai Teacher, but during the day I went to buy the anime, I forgot the complete name and only remember "teacher." Seeing the "Teacher" in GTO, I picked up the first two DVDs and went home to watch them. Little did I know that I got the wrong titles, but I didn't care I enjoyed GTO. Coincidentally at work, I found five volumes of GTO laying on the ground when I was doing work and purchased them too (at a 40% discount...wah hoo!). I also read, coincidentally yet again, Animerica's issue with GTO on the cover. In the article it mentioned that GTO displayed issues that is in Japanese schools, and in a history text book on Japan ( I finished the history text in three days). I was like, "Wow." Being that I study Psychology and Sociology, I figured to check out GTO more closely, and hence I found my number one love for an anime, manga, and live action drama. Great character development. Except for the live action, the Anime version of GTO's music wasn't one of the reasons why I love GTO so much.

Twelve Kingdoms This was a suggestion to purchase from another friend, and this time I wrote down the title so I wouldn't forget. But it was kind of hard to forget at Suncoast because during my walk inside, they were playing a promo of the anime. What got me immediately, was not the anime, itself, but the music. Being an avid fan of Chinese/Asian instrumental music, it hooked and sunk me into getting the series. I didn't watch it right after I purchased it since I am still in school, but I did get time to watch the first two DVDs sequentially. And boy did I like it. It was very reminiscent of the old Chinese/Vietnamese movies that my parents watched. Or actually reminiscent of a drama that I watched with my parents when I was very little. And being that I enjoy fantasy and romance, this anime was next in line to be one of my favorites. I like Youko's development into being an emotionally developing adept adolescent. Of course I felt that she was a whiner in the first three DVDs of the series, but she grew on me. I want to series to continue for a long time, as well, I would like to get the manga or novels if they come out in the US.

Macross Plus My very first and favorite anime. Yoko Kanno is a wonderful musician and composer. I make it my duty to get any anime in which she was the composer. But back to the actual anime of MAcross PLus. I was at the age where impressions and imagination was still important in my life, and I saw this with it's fighters and UN spacey. I got into so much trouble the next day in school when I kept on daydreaming what it would be like flying one of those jets in Macross PLus. Guld's portrayal of the tragic hero was excellent. Even though it was short, it was still a great anime to watch...over and over and over. Plus you get a real great music soundtracks to listen to.

Cowboy Bebop As I said in MAcross PLus, anything with Yoko Kanno composing, I have to get. Cowboy Bebop was the next one on the list to get. Her jazzy swank music is just great to listen to to relax, get into the mood, and feel energetic. I didn't care much for the story, even interesting as it was, I cared more about the style and the music, above all. The music was the key to my love of this series. And what do you know, I am listening to Cowboy Bebop right now.

Ghost in the Shell Some weird, techno-ish music by, none other than Yoko Kanno. Maybe she needs to take a rest....even if we fans yearn for her music daily. Ghost in the Shell, was one of those rented because "I am too young and didn't want parents to know about" types. I saw this a little bit after Macross PLus with my brother. Being that my parents are the strict type about what we watch, Ghost in the Shell was one they didn't want us to watch. Or me really, because I was still young and very impressionable. So I snuck out and watched it with my brother. It was cool. It is a cool anime because of its slickness. And what do you know, today we are getting somewhat closer to what Ghost in the shell portrayed. A highly connected society through computers.

Tenchi Muyo I watched this at my neighbor's house as I took care of their pet dog, Rusty. I would watch this every time I was called to take care of her house, garden, and pet, sometimes at weeks to months at a time. Sure it was a simple harem anime, but it was an addictive one. It was like a mix of Star Wars (My favorite movie series.....with Indiana Jones coming in a close second) and some other show that I can' remember. I watched the OVA, TV series (Universe), and the three movies every day when I would come home from school. This excludes Tenchi in Tokyo. this was the first Anime that I actually bought in VHS format. Its occasional silliness, but fun at the same time, made it easy to like and remember.

Escaflowne What can I say, I really love Yoko Kanno. I really love her music as well. Just like Twelve Kingdoms, I really liked this anime because of its fantasy/romance genre. I watched the movie before the series, and I love both. I don't care if the movie doesn't follow the TV series to a "T," it is still great.


Honorable mentions in the positive favorites:
Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, Wolf's Rain, El Hazard, Full Metal Panic!, and Ah! My Goddess.

Not so liked Animes:

I don't know if I will go into detail for this but....

Tenchi in Tokyo What did they do to Tenchi in this version? Sakuya? After the first two episodes on my VHS versions of Tenchi in TOkyo, I left it and never picked it up ever again. It wasn't fun seeing the characters that I have grown to love become oddly annoying and tenchi falling for a puppet.


...I think that is the only anime that I don't like.

I dunno about Akira, when i first saw it, i though it was great, awesome graphics, but the story wasn't really explained fully. after recently reading the manga i feel the film is slightly weaker in the story element, and a lot of bits were chopped up and placed else where and but weren't in alltogether. However, in saying that on its own the film is a masterpiece, but as an adaptation of the story it was pretty week. Maybe if it was done as a series, but who knows.

My Top 10

10. Fruits Basket: Very few anime can pull off a combination of comedy and drama (see Full Metal Panic or Trigun for more information). But Fruits Basket does just this. You’ll laugh. You may even cry. You’ll either hate Tohru or you’ll love her. But you will like Kyo. ‘Nuff said.

9. Great Teacher Onizuka: The animation sucks. “Driver’s High” is extremely catchy, but the only good song in the anime. So, yes, not much accolades can go to its aesthetics or soundtrack. But man, is Onizuka one hell of a character. I wish I had a teacher like that. But more importantly, GTO is bloody hilarious.

8. Voices of a Distant Star: Inuyasha and Naruto are both over 100 episodes. But yet, not once have either of those shows produced what I call “art.” Voices of a Distant Star runs at less than thirty minutes and puts Inuyasha, Naruto, and most movies and TV series longer than it, to utter shame.

7. The Vision of Escaflowne: Although definitely a pinnacle of its genre, it is still bested by 12K. And it happens to be one of my favorites. With the exception of the two leads (and perhaps Dilandau), the characters are shallow. Oh well. It also suffers from having a questionable ending. But despite that, though, it has an excellent plot. And how about that soundtrack, eh?

6. Twelve Kingdoms: It’s almost insulting that this is compared to Fushigi Yugi. Yes, the two shows have similar premises, but that is where the similarities lie (Thank God for that.). Twelve Kingdoms probably has the strongest character development I’ve witnessed in an anime. An epic and imaginative story and fully realized world makes Twelve Kingdoms the best in the fantasy genre.

5. Grave of the Fireflies: Although I prefer Barefoot Gen, this is still an excellent movie. And it’s Ghibli’s best film

4. Barefoot Gen: I like tragedies. I’m a sucker for them. However, unlike its Ghibli counterpart that appeared five years later, Barefoot Gen is much more than a tragedy. It’s not about despair, but hope in the midst of it.

3. Rurouni Kenshin: Reminiscence: As close to unadulterated perfection anime will ever achieve. Seriously. The only flaw this OVA has is the occasional awkwardness of the computer graphics. That’s saying something. And no, unlike what most seem to think, you don’t need to read a page of the manga or watch an episode of the TV series to appreciate its greatness. (It doesn’t exactly take Einstein to realize this is supreme.)

2. Berserk: Because anime villains are usually either cliché, wholly evil, or just plain yawn-inducing, I find myself not really giving a damn. Not only is Griffith the best character in this anime, but he’s the most complex and complicated villain to ever grace the anime scene. There has been no other like him. None. (Though Monster’s villain comes close) Guts and Caska are excellent characters, as well. It also has a fantastic story: Does man create his own fate is there some other entity calling the shots? Sure, anime like Escaflowne and X TV have touched on this issue, but not as prominently (or violently haha) as Berserk. Despite its terrible ending, Berserk is easily the most powerful anime I’ve seen. It also has the title of being the show that finally got me into anime.

1. Rose of Versailles: Considered to be the first shoujo, Rose of Versailles is the inspiration for titles such as Revolutionary Girl Utena and the more recent Maria-sama ga Miteru. Even after twenty-five years, Rose of Versailles manages to be heads and tales above other anime created much later. With an outstanding story and the most memorable female character of all time, Versailles is the best anime I’ve seen.

My Bottom 5

5. Kimi ga Nozumo Eien and Saikano: Since these two are very similar, I’ll just lump them together. Both are the worse romances I’ve seen. Both are contrived and manipulative. KNGE is nothing but an animated soap opera, the most clichéd genre of American media. Both are extremely unrealistic with exasperating characters. Saikano is terribly boring. Both have those male leads with the personality of a doorknob. And because of this, both are also extremely funny. This is not a good thing because neither are meant to be humorous. KNGE had awful comic relief. But it had two good things about it: Hayase (to an extent) and the ending. Saikano, however, has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

4. Perfect Blue: It’s unfortunate that this had to be the first movie I saw by Satoshi Kon. Until I watched Millennium Actress, Satoshi Kon was synonymous with “dung.” This movie would have been best as a live-action film. Unfortunately, Kon decides to draw an ultra-predictable and gratuitous story. In any case, I’ll rather be watching Basic Instinct.

3. 98% of harem (or "romantic comedies"), but I have a special loathing for Love Hina. Why a loser getting constantly beaten to a pulp by girls whose panties have a bigger IQ than they is so popular is beyond me.

2. End of Evangelion: It’s nothing but drivel. Even the director said so.

1. Crying Freeman and Odin: Photon Space Sailor Starlight: Crying Freeman is probably the worse OVA ever made. Odin is………just bad. VERY bad.
 
We're getting "best" and "favorite" muddled here. The distinction is important because, for me, an anime title can certainly be one without being the other. (Case in point: I regard Grave of the Fireflies as one of the best titles I've ever seen but certainly wouldn't consider it among my favorites.)

These are the picks I would rate highly on both "best" and "favorite" lists:

Movies

Akira
It's a classic for a good reason. Arguably the best purely cel-based artistry and animation to be found in any anime movie as well as presenting a mind-bending story, mind-blowing action, and one of the best anime soundtracks ever.

Princess Mononoke
There are other titles that edge it out in artistry, but it's still a visual marvel and, IMO, the best overall anime movie to date. Certainly one of the best and most original stories amongst all anime titles, with thrilling action and a stellar soundtrack to boot.

Perfect Blue
Again, there are titles that edge it out in artistic quality, but the creepy mind-games in this taut pyschological thriller keep me coming back. Very definitely R-rated, though.

Spirited Away
Yeah, this one skews more towards younger audiences, but it's still a fantastic movie by any standards. One of the best-looking and most inventive of all anime movies, and with a great story as well.

Voices of a Distant Star
Technically it's a short, and it isn't in the company of the above in terms of visual quality, but this 25-minute love story about maintaining connections across long distances is one of the most heartfelt of all anime stories. Also features incredible musical scoring.

Series

Key The Metal Idol
Hey, there's a reason why I use the title character as my avatar. :) This mature, serious 15-episode drama about a socially inept robot girl's efforts to accumulate the 30,000 friends she needs to become human is one of the best-written, most original, and most engrossing titles available in the American market. It features great music, one of the all-time great anime villains, and dark revelations late in the series that will both astound the viewer and force a reevaluation of everything you've seen so far. The artistry, though more ordinary, uses a few subtle and clever touches that are easily overlooked but form highly significant plot points. (Watch Key's appearance very carefully throughout the series.)

Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden
This 12-episode series from GAINAX is one of those rare titles where a collection of stock characters, scenes, and story elements come together to make a whole that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Although this story about a cute female combat android who retires from active duty to spend her remaining 398 days as a maid for an orphaned middle-schooler is primarily a raucous comedy (and a very funny one at that), it has an underlying sadness, some sobering subtexts, and a surprisingly tender side which set it apart from all other robot-maid series. It is even occasionally a real tear-jerker. Fair warning: this series is notorious for its fan service and raunchy content. The follow-up season, subtitled Something More Beautiful, is too bloated with filler to make this list but does a great job of finishing the original storyline when it finally gets around to it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
If you don't already understand why I'd put this series on this list then you need to see this series for yourself. Definitely one of the most intense, influential, controversial, and multilayered of all anime series, as well as one of the most distinctive of all mecha series. Multiple viewings and research is required to fully understand and appreciate it, I think, and yeah, I like the original ending as well as the movie ending.

Twelve Kingdoms
A 49-episode fantasy series ground in Chinese Mythology which is most distinctive for the fascinating world it creates and its gorgeous artistry, especially in character design. Although the plot does move along at a leisurely pace, this allows for a more full exploration of the world and for its characters to grow and change substantially over the course in time. One of the best modern fantasy series.

Scrapped Princess
This 24-episode fantasy series from BONES, about a "scrapped" princess who must live and travel incognito because she was prophecized at birth to be the "poison who will destroy the world" when she turns 16, isn't available in the States yet but has been licensed and should start coming out in the first half of next year. Great characters, an interesting story with some real twists, and healthy dollops of magic, swordplay, humor, and heartfelt emotion make this a fresh and highly entertaining series.

Honorable mentions among series include Inuyasha, Saikano, Last Exile, Boogiepop Phantom, and Now and Then, Here and There (which doesn't make my list because, while one of the best series to date, it's a difficult view because of the powerful emotions in it).

Well, what can I say? The only anime I have ever been exposed to was all on Cartoon Network. So, I don't have 10 favorite or 5 least, but I'll do my best.

Favorites

1. Cowboy Bebop - GREAT, GREAT series. It had great action sequences, and like everyone else has said, the music was dead on. The "story" was the best I have ever seen in any series, book, movie, whatever. (I love the end fall in "The Ballad of Fallen Angels")


2. Trigun - I loved this show because of the perfect mix of action and humor. It gives you a little bit of his history and then keeps you guessing about Vash the whole way through until the very end. I liked the villians, because they're not what you expect (the end of Legato). I also loved the humor. One of the funniest shows I've seen.


3. Inuyasha - I loved this series instantly also because of the terrific battle scenes and the intelligent humor thrown in. The characters all have their own special abilities and their own interesting (and interlocking) stories. Extremely well written, interesting from front to.... um, the latest episode.


4. FullMetal Alchemist - haven't seen enough episodes to give a good review, but so far, it is great.


5. Ghost in the Shell SAC - same as FullMetal Alchemist


Least Favorite (just one)

1. Hamtaro - um, yeah. When I first saw an episode, I hated my eyes for a week. And my ears. I just could not believe that someone would take the time to create a world just for hamsters. It's not so bad that it is about hamsters, but there was no point to any of the episodes I saw. They tried to go some place and back, then they tried to find some seeds, then they talked to new hamsters about stuff. And there was a girl who owned one of them, and she was talking to the hamster. That's pretty much all i saw in the few episodes. Boring, and pointless.

I dunno about Akira, when i first saw it, i though it was great, awesome graphics, but the story wasn't really explained fully. after recently reading the manga i feel the film is slightly weaker in the story element, and a lot of bits were chopped up and placed else where and but weren't in alltogether. However, in saying that on its own the film is a masterpiece, but as an adaptation of the story it was pretty week. Maybe if it was done as a series, but who knows.

I don't think I've even seen 10 anime series in my entire life. Well, I think I have, but I haven't seen enough of them to pass proper judgement, so I'll use the anime I have seen a lot of, and a few will be movies. Hating anime is easy for me, it just has to have a weak storyline and that'll do it (although there are exceptions). Here we go!

1. RahXephon
Beats out EVA, the anime formerly known as the best ever made. RahXephon is the complete package, taking a thought-provoking storyline, some of the best music ever heard in an anime, great characters, and a bit of fan service, mixing them together and creating this monstrosity that has been unfairly branded as an EVA clone.

2. Neon Genesis Evangelion
This almost perect formula held the "best anime" title for 7 years until RahXephon came out. If it wasn't for Shinji's constant whining, this anime would be perfect. Instead, it's a stellar anime that should be watched.

3. Inuyasha
Again, another near-perfect anime, but this one has a bigger preoblem: it's TOO LONG! If my memory serves correctly, Inuyasha's grand episode total is 156, and that's too long for a series. I can see why the public's attention has been held (great action, sotryline), but this series didn't need as many episodes as it has.

4. Witch Hunter Robin
Great series that was brought down by a shoddy ending. The dub is good (OMG!), the characters are well-developed, ans the storyline is great as well, but that series ending just leaves so much unsolved.

5. Trigun
Ah, everybody's favorite manic depressive series. The thing that weighs down this series is the complete mood swing that takes place after episode 10. This could've been one of the most light-hearted gun-slinging animes ever. Instead, it becomes REAL depressing and can change a person's mood in a snap.

6. Rurouni Kenshin
A great series that is overshadowed by the much better manga. Kenshin is a good anime, don't get me wrong, it's just that the anime gets overshadowed by the manga because Kenshin is a bit more serious in the manga, and the anime's storyline is not as strong, and the anime is a laugh-fest at times.

7. Hellsing
One of the most flawed animes ever makes my top 10 list. The reason why is because the storyline may have a ton of holes, especially at the end, but it's so action-packed that it glues you to your TV set and you always wanna see who Arucard is gonna either shoot up, maim, or impale next. Also, people who follow the series will want to see if Seras grows herself a vampiric spine and decides to give up what's left of her humanity.

8. Gundam Wing
A wonderful series, possibly the best in the Gundam series (I need to see more Gundam, especially Gundam Seed). This anime was released about the same time as EVA, so it's not as widely hearladed, but for a time, it was my personal favorite. Good characters and a strong storyline are the hallmarks of this series.

9.Akira
This movie is a real masterpiece, but there are 8 anime series out there, and that's what bings Akira down to #9. Akira has the goods to possibly be the best anime movie ever (I need to see more anime movies), but the storyline is too convoluted at times.

10. Robotech
The last anime in my top 10 is one of the most heralded, and it's also one of my favorites. This series is 20 years old now, but it hasn't lost any of it's luster over that time. The only thing that keeps Robotech from breaking the top 5 is that the series goes south after the Macross Saga. Southern Cross is horrid, and Mospedea(sp?) is not even close to the mark. Robotech is remembered for Macross, and that's about 26 out of the 85 episodes in Robotech.

My least favorite anime series

I don't have 5 least favorite anime series, but I do have one that I implore people to stay away from at all costs.

DragonBall Z
The most overrated anime series ever. The creator was supposed to stop after the Frieza Saga, but the company taking care of production told the DBZ creator to continue. Big mistake. The only good saga after Frieza is the Cell Saga, but the series just got FAR too repetitive and the formula was tired. Not to mention the OUTLANDISH length of the series at over 300(!) episodes.

Hey that was very long I might add. well here is my top 10/5 anime that I llike and don't like.

The first is Trigun, I like it becase it has a great story line and it keeps u in despence. (sorry if my spelling is bad).

Nextis Vandred becase it somthing that u will never expect in real life.male vs femals kind of funny is it.

Tenchi Muyo II Daghter of Darkness, its cool becaus just becase you are bon of darkness you can still chang into a good person. What I mean is if you did something bad or you are following a bad path u can allways change to be a good person.

Spiral, its cool because it keeps you instered of what going to hapen next( if you ever seen Case Close you know what I mean vol 1-5 should be out now).

Crono Crusade, Its cool becase it has a lot of good fighting scens. Its about a girl who friends with a good devil name Crono who fights demons who they call as devils.

Next is Birdy the Mighty, it is about a girl who sharing a body with a boy and fighting of monster and geting reveng of somebody. I haven't seen for a while, I only seen vol 1 and 2 but I stiil like it.

Getbackers is a good one. I can't give much details but if you have digital cabel go to ondemand and then go to the cuting eged then go on action.

El Hazerd is a good one, its a realy funny anime. It is about three preastes a boy a girl and a man with a bug gon to another demention.

Samarie X even though the caracters don't have the same characters voices but it was a great ending for Kenstion and the others but bad at the same time.

Full Meatel Alchamist is a great show to watch. I finaly got to watch it just reasonly.

The anime i don't lidke is nothing. I like all typs of anime but my favorit type is a serise that has action, romance and commedy or a love story lide Inu Yasha and Fugi Yugi.

Just to add I started watching anime since I was 10. If it wan't for my brother I probaly would not watch anime, but every time I watch anime I always learn a lesson to better my self the way I act towards people or my actions. Its basicaly my world kind of.

I completely agree. I used to think EVA was the best anime series ever, BAR NONE, but then I saw this masterwork! Everything happens for a reason. (most) things that happen are explained. It's not so wrapped up in itself, and having to be crazy, or unreal. Not to mention the great character relationships that flow throughout the whole story. Where in EVA is there anything like the Ayato/Asahina relationship? Nobody even liked Shinji enought to have a relationship like that with him - let alone the viewer. It's refreshing that Ayato is actually a LIKEABLE character. And don't get me started on the endings...

So, Raxephon - the TV, not the movie - is my number 1.

As much as I bashed it, EVA is probably number 2. That was the first show I was really into, and I still have some good memories of it. I'm a sucker for a good mystery, and mixing that with Giant Robots is a combination that can't be beat. I loved the crazyness of it all; how I'd think I've got it figured out, only to realize I have no idea what's going on.

Everything after that is good, but I'm not as passionate about. I'd include (not in this order) Grave of the Fireflies - great story & so sad, Noir - action assasins & mystery, Dai-Gard - funny office workers, Hellsing - action, GTO (so far) - humor and heart, Now and then, here and there - nice message and great story, Voices of a distant star - great story & so sad, and of course Cowboy bebop - do I really have to list why?

My least favorite shows have got to be the new .hack and Final Fantasy unlimited. I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy game series, and also liked the .hack//sign show and games, so I had big expectations coming into these. Unfortunately, the little kids running around, and slow pacing made me lose interest quickly. I've tried to watch again, but they're sooo boring, I just can't take it!

Top 6 Favorite Anime

1. Puni Puni Poemi - What is most likely one of the most perverse, insane anime ever created. By the creator of Excel Saga, this surpassed even the raunchiest of humor that Excel Saga had to offer, something I didn't think possible. Also, I simply couldn't get over all the fun it poked at anime and anime-realated stereotypes (IE, Tentacle hentai and Nurses in Bondage being a representation of "Japanese Culture"), especially that which I've heard so many people who don't know what they're talking about state. This is also the best quality DVD I've ever wittnessed, and I fell in love with everything from the line about having an itchy butt in the opening song, to the Sailor Moon style transformation of Poemi/Kobiyashi.

2. Excel Saga - I don't see how anyone could NOT fall deeply in love with this series. It had so many cultural refferences, to both American film and other animes. I loved how it parodied the oh so generic subject matter of the various genres of anime, and how each episode it told you in a way such as the writer of the Excel Saga manga saying "I hereby give my permission to turn Excel Saga into a Teen Drama anime!" It even had an episode in the form of a dating sim. xD I really don't see how it's possible to resist such brilliance.

3. Serial Experiments Lain - I love philosophy, religion conflict, and aspects of the human mind, along with how humanity interacts with each other as the world moves forward in evolution of technology and power. Lain had it all, and the end really left me thinking for along time about the world and people around me.


4. Adolescence of Utena - The most beautiful animated film I've ever seen. I really adore storytelling in metaphorical form, and that's what this film was almost completely composed of. It had a nice mix of action, romance, and just plain oddities that it took me about 20 reviews to figure out. (Though I still don't get the carwash scene or the "scandelous video")

5. Sailor Stars - While I love all 5 of the Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon series, this has got to be the best of them all. It had a nice mix of drama, romance, comedy, and sexual innuendo without going too extreme for young people. It also had it oddities, like the transformation/sex changing, which made for some highly interesting situations (especially when it came to Seiya dating Usagi). The last 6 episodes were very dark and full of violence and distruction, and very moving moments. I enjoyed every minute of it.

6. Akira - The difinitive anime film. This movie had not one moment I wasn't glued to the screen. The artwork was stunning, and it gave a grim and very possible look into what direction our world is heading in. Not only did it have philosophical and psychological aspects, but also political, and some of the grim side of human emotion and ridicule. I've been watching it over and over for years now and it's still one of the best I've seen.

"Nothing but robots?" What Gundam were you watching? Most of them (or at least most of the worthwhile ones) tend to place the mobile suits in the background and character development up front.

Anyway, for all the posting I do in here, I should probably post a Top Ten of my own, but I'm currently having trouble compiling one. Might think of something later.

I don't have top ten yet i don't have such a vast selection of anime as of yet. But the ones i do like are

1. Evangelion- one of the first animes i started watchign just the fact that its so intact, the story, and the psychological, and philisophical points that it has its just so out there you would never see something like that in a hollywood movie.

2. Beserk- even though the ending left me wanting more, i know i should read the magna but just don't have time to read anythign extra besides my school books. The action on this is great blood spill and all.

3. Gungrave- this anime is just awsome, i love brandon heat like someone esle pointed out here he's the strong silent type don't mess with him cause hell fill you with bullet holes, and then when he comes back as beyond the grave he's just even more awsome, this anime is great, good story great action.

4. Ronin warrios- yes i said it i love it one of the first next to evangelion for me to watch i love it just the fact that i watched as a kid.

5. full metal alchemist- I've seen some epsidoes on adult swim and i love it so far its great seems to have a good story behind it .

6. Inuyasha- a demon dog helping humans as he tries to recover a sacred jewel to become human or full demon. whats greater than that? "sit boy"

7. Cowboy beepbop- i just love the futurerist bounty hunter style spikes the man.

Here is the list of my Top Ten Favorite Anime:

1. Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal - Best anime of all time i don't know y u wouldn't want to watch it. recomended for all from me.

2.Rurouni Kenshin: Tv - I'm a big fan of this anime, very well done in everything. My favorite part is the story the story is really nice. Check it out guys if u haven't seen it.

3.Full Metal Alchemist - The reason i like this anime is because of the plot, and how it all ended. i thought taht the ending was way beyond awesomeness. watch it if u can tell whats going on.

4.Detective Conan - I know you all may think this anime has terrible drawing, i agree too but the humor and all mystery stuff makes up for the drawing. Its a really cool anime, Fourth Favorite.

5.FLCL - Or furikuri like u may heard. This anime takes you beyond ur imagination, i think what makes this anime so cool is also the story of it. Yea i know i only like my animes because of the story......not all true, this anime has great music!!! Just like many others in my top ten.

6. Naruto - Yea very popular anime. I think its pretty good. Number one thing i like about this anime is the humor that it has.

7.Grave of the fireflies - One of the best movie i had watched in my life. very very sad,(as in unhappy not bad). check it out. guaranteed to cry

8.Spirited AWay - Yep another movie by Hayao Miyazaki. This guy is awesome he makes the best movies out there.

9.Mononoke HIme - Yea its by the same dude as Spirited AWay too. Very good movie.

10.Inuyasha - i don't got much to say about this one except that it is very well done in everything.
 
What are your 10 favorite and 5 least favorite anime?

My goodness! Thefirst version of this list I brainstormed had over 100 titles listed. The first thing I did was remove those well made films that were "Great Anime" more than "My Favorite Anime" like Grave of the Fireflies, Akira, Jin-Roh, and Spirited Away. Then I removed all the titles I've seen only once. I then removed works that I'm still in the process of watching like, Stand Alone Complex, Champloo and Gungrave. This left me with a over 50 titles of which about half I've dropped.

Zeta Gundam
This is also the show which turned me from a casual anime fan into a full blown otaku. Not only was the show highly anticipated back in 1985, but the series has lasted the test of time. Tomino gave us a few shockers, like Char being one of the protagonists, and the Chikyurenpo being so evil. Yasuhiko and Okawara gave it that "Gundam" atmosphere which even they failed to recapture in F-91. There were a slew of new characters fighting along side with Amuro, Char, Bright and gang. In many ways this reminded me of the staff which comprised of the original Gundam team working with relatively new commers, like Nagano, Kitazume, and Kobayashi. This series marks the end of Nippon Sunrise's three year transition into the new era of anime, which began with Dunbine and L-gaim in my opinion. I'm looking forward to more MG kits from Bandai with the launch of the Zeta films.

Lupin Cagliostro's Castle
There isn't another film from the 70s that looks remtotely as slick as the Miyazaki directed Lupin film. There are some scenes that are burnt into my brain having spent hours in the early 80s playing the Cliffhangers LD arcade game. Miyazaki's Lupin is much more lovable compared to the younger Monkey Punch Lupin. The fight in the clocktower is amazingly directed. This was also one of the first anime 35mm films I saw in a movie theater.

Area 88
The original 3 act OVA was one of those series I've watched countless times. All three endings are so poetic and sad. Mio's theme song is so heart felt. The concepts of losing everything you have through betrayal of someone close to you is represented nicely. The series also has a sweeping BGM.

Laputa
I saw this film three times at the movie theater back in the 80s, Laputa holds a strong nostalgic value to me. Like many other titles on this lists it involves airships and high adventure. This might be (along with Nausicaa and Venus Wars) Jyo Hisaishi's best score to date. I can't get into his newer music as much as these older films. Miyazaki generates an amazing amount of emotion through his robots, which I find impressive.

Time Stranger
The film known as Toki no Tabibito which nobody seems to have seen (hmmm no Encyclopedia entry), even though it was fairly popular when released. This is another gem from the mid 80s which dealt with time travel, Nobunaga, and lobotomies. The animation is gorgeous, dark and fluid. Madhouse animated this Kadokawa feature, which will hopefully be released in the US someday.

Dagger of Kamui
Released a little before Time Stranger, this Rin Taro film shares its epic scope. Like someone previously mentioned, this film is the best ninja film ever. Rin Taro, and Madhouse give life to their characters when it comes to animation. There is more story in this film than most television series tell in a whole season.

Nadia
I wish Nadia was more consistant of a series. Even with the dreaded "island" episodes the series is still very dear to me. The episode where the Nautalis visits old Atlantis convinced me that the series was something very special. The scene when Nadia and Jean are sperated from the Nautalis while high drama is occuring between Elektra and Nemo convinced me to buy all the Laser Discs. The epilogue still gets me everytime I watch the last episode.

Venus Wars
A highly ambitious film which I watched non-stop upon it's release. You can see how Yas arrived at his peak as a director in this film. There are some scenes where everything is so beautifully choreographed. Every bump in the road results in a minor bounce of the wheel, followed by a minor bounce of a vehicle, followed by a subtle nod of the pilots head. When I watch Venus Wars and Arion I wish Yas would direct more films since he has such a strong sense of motion. Jyo Hisaishi also has wonderful scores for both films.

Wolf's Rain
I must side with those who like Wolf's Rain. There is something haunting and poetic in the delivery of the story. I've never watched a more melencholly series. There are so many heart wrenching moments in the OVA. I almost wished the epilogue wasn't included, but will not go into details to avoid spoilers. Gravity fits the series so well.

Hellsing
Another show that the board seems split on is Hellsing. I almost didn't list this series since I've only watched it twice, but felt I should take a stance since it is so heavily debated. This is one of the few series I've watched both language tracks for since I usually stick with the Japanese tracks. Because of the setting, the English works for me. This is the same reason I can't bring myself to watch Patlabor, Orange Road or X in English. It just seems too strange. Hellsing has the coolest "Next Episode" trailers.

Berserk
As soon as I watched the last episode of Berserk, I placed the first episode into the DVD player and rewatched the series. It's amazing what they did with such a limited budget. Even with all the still images and reused songs the show is brilliant. The pacing and writting pull the series through, and I'm glad many of you agree.

Honneamise
Wings of Honeamise broke all the conventions of anime when it was released. I remember seeing a commercial for this film during an episode of Dragonar and replaying the commercial a dozen times. It is somewhat sad to note that most of Gainax's films since then involve barely dressed women, loud music, and giant robots. It is as if the studio gave up on being a high brow art studio, and decided to rather pander to fans. Don't get me wrong, I like many Gainax projects. I just miss the elegance of Honneamise.

Gunbuster
This is a perfect example of hot girls flying giant robots from Gainax production. I actually had troubles watching the first episode way back. I think I stopped the tape during the mecha pushup scene. Once I convinced myself not to compare it to Honneamise I found the series extremly enjoyable. The end of the last episode is so touching. I'm a little skeptic on the sequel.

Perfect Blue
Satoshi Kon is my new hero. This is another selection that I've only seen twice, but feel as though as I need to suport it. Kon doesn't play into the conventions that are found in most anime, which I think contributes to his unpopularity. Like Akira I think this makes the film more accessable to non-anime fans, but at the same times scares people away. Mllenium Actress is also amazing, although I feel he is strarting to repeat himself with Paranoia Agent.

Last Exile
What an amazing series. I think I've already mentioned my attraction to airships. Alex and the Sylvania are the coolest group since Nemo's crew. The integration of CG to cel animation works really well. I actually liked the ending unlike some fans.

Please Save My Earth
Another series in which I bought all of the manga and laser discs after watching the first time. There is something haunting about this series. The series touches upon themes of betrayal and forgiveness, as well as apocolyopse. Normally I don't go for Hana to Yume titles, but there was something in this series which I couldn't resist.

War in the Pocket 0080
Mikimoto and Izubuchi working together was a dream come true for me. I think the 0080 kits were the first Bandai kits that didn't require paint to look good. This series proved that Gundam could be made without Tomino, Bright Noa, or Newtypes. It was with this OVA series that propelled Gundam into the franchise it is today. This series also proved you didn't need a big MS battle in every episode.

Kino's Journey
Another new favorite of mine which I've only watched twice through. Another title which I've listened to both tracks. The English 5.1 mix is really well done. The general atmosphere of this series is unique. The closest thing I equate it to is the old Matsumoto series like Galaxy Express. So reflective and poetic.

Giant Gorg
Yas' masterpiece Giant Gorg is a non stop action ride. The guy created, wrote and directed the project. I love how his characters run and stumble around. I feel as though shows like Outlaw Star and Nadia borrowed many elements from Gorg. The animation was a little ahead for it's time.

Princess Mononoke
What can I say that hasn't already been said about this classic. Reflecting his ideas about greed, classism and the environment, I feel as this is Miyazki's most mature film to date. I believe the documentary on the Nausicaa DVD sums it up well when it is stated the Miyazaki needed to make Mononoke then, since he can always do lighter films when he is older.

Macross Plus
Another surprising sequel. After the very disappointing Macross II, Macross plus easily won us over. The series took a new approach to the old mecha genre. I find it strange that people compare Macross Plus to Yukikaze. Although there are a few thematic similarities, the two series are atospherically different. The Sharon Apple concerts are really cool. Macross Zero seems neat too, but I've yet to see the rest of the series.

Gundam 0083
The Gundam team managed to capture so much of the feel of the 0079 Gundam and Zeta in one series. The last four episodes blend so well together. I just wished the series had a better audio production. Gundam seemed to be in a nebulous zone between 1987 and 1991. With the less than succesful sales of 0080, and the conclusion of the Amuro/Char saga I was wondering if Gundam was over. The question never crossed my mind after 0083 was released.

Giant Robo
I remember premiering the film print of this series back in Animecon 1991. I don't think the show had been released in Japan (Encyclopedia entry is 1992) at the time. We watched that film print so many times on my old projector. I guess I've always been a sucker for shows that are completely reinvented. The art is so sleek for an OVA, especially at its time. The soundtrack is amazing.

Gundam
The original series and films that started it all. I've own so many copies of Gundam III. Tomino drew a big Haro on my LD cover back in 1992. Despite the really cool 5.1 mix, I like the music choises of the non-special edition films. I'm hanging onto both versions, not unlike my copies of Star Wars. I can't believe the show was cancelled due to low ratings back in 1979, then also failed to complete it's run on CN over 20 years later!

Escaflowne
This show came out during a dark period of anime for me. Escaflowne, along with Johji Manabe's Rai (hmm yet another show without an encyclopedia entry), various Gundams, and Berserk were the only shows I watched from 1992-1998. I like the idea of controlling destiny. I can't believe that Sakamoto also sings Gravity!

Boogiepop Phantom
One of the few series in which I rewatched the series right after completing it. Plenty of thought went into writing the series. The audio commentary also provides some real cool insight. There are subtle symbols and themes that are easy to miss upon first viewing. Kyoko from the Barbee Boys does the ending song too! The last time I think she worked on anime was back on To-Y.

Aura Battler Dunbine
As mentioned by someone else, Dunbine is one of the most under rated series. Like the orginal Gundam series, most of the first half is set up. Rewatching Dunbine recently for the first time in over a decade I found myself surprised art how late the concept of Hyper is introduced, not unlike Newtypes. Then I remmeber I used to only watch the last dozen episodes regularly. I only wish that those 80s Tomino series would go on longer, since it always felt like Tomino would release the guilotine just as the series was going at full speed.

SPT Layzner
Somewhere lost between Votoms and Gasaraki is Takahashi's Layzner. It is amusing to think that the series begins in the near future of 1996. I like how time passes and the characters change so much as the years pass. With the less than stellar sales of other classic series I wouldn't count on a US release.

Crest/Banner of the Stars
There isn't much I can add that hasn't been already mentioned about this series. I first heard of the novels some time ago when they were compared to SF writer Catherine Asaro's Ruby Dynasty novels. Naturally when the anime was released I had to see it. True enough, it felt like good literary SF.

Geisters
I've never seen such a bad mix of 2D and 3D. There is nothing about this show that I like.

Vifam
This series has perhaps the lamest theme songs ever. I can't believe they did a remake of this series. Most of my Vifam memories consist of a bunch of kids goofing around. It was like ZZ Gundam without the Gundam.

Final Fantasy Unlimited
A major dissapointment since I'm a huge FF fan. They should have had the Last Exile team do a FF series instead.

California Crisis
Wow, I haven't seen this for a very long time. I remember wanting to see it since I was a big umetsu fan at the time, and being very dissapointed.

Future War 198X
The all time loser. The last time I watched this was New Years 1989. A really slow boring story without a strong protagonist. I can't remember any details since it's been so long, and am almost willing to watch it again for laughs.

I completely agree. I used to think EVA was the best anime series ever, BAR NONE, but then I saw this masterwork! Everything happens for a reason. (most) things that happen are explained. It's not so wrapped up in itself, and having to be crazy, or unreal. Not to mention the great character relationships that flow throughout the whole story. Where in EVA is there anything like the Ayato/Asahina relationship? Nobody even liked Shinji enought to have a relationship like that with him - let alone the viewer. It's refreshing that Ayato is actually a LIKEABLE character. And don't get me started on the endings...

So, Raxephon - the TV, not the movie - is my number 1.

As much as I bashed it, EVA is probably number 2. That was the first show I was really into, and I still have some good memories of it. I'm a sucker for a good mystery, and mixing that with Giant Robots is a combination that can't be beat. I loved the crazyness of it all; how I'd think I've got it figured out, only to realize I have no idea what's going on.

Everything after that is good, but I'm not as passionate about. I'd include (not in this order) Grave of the Fireflies - great story & so sad, Noir - action assasins & mystery, Dai-Gard - funny office workers, Hellsing - action, GTO (so far) - humor and heart, Now and then, here and there - nice message and great story, Voices of a distant star - great story & so sad, and of course Cowboy bebop - do I really have to list why?

My least favorite shows have got to be the new .hack and Final Fantasy unlimited. I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy game series, and also liked the .hack//sign show and games, so I had big expectations coming into these. Unfortunately, the little kids running around, and slow pacing made me lose interest quickly. I've tried to watch again, but they're sooo boring, I just can't take it!
