Toonzone's Top 50 Animated Show Countdown!

You realize that only 22 people voted for this? It's not exactly a perfect measure of rabroad's favorites.

Looney is great where it's at, but I'll be sad if Family Guy beats it. (FG needs to be in the 20's...)

First of all, I didn't insult anybody. I was clearly stating facts.

I find NOTHING wrong with the animation. Keep in mind that Scooby was made in 1969. You didn't have all that megapixel CGI mumbo jumbo or whatever it's called today, and the animation got better as new Scooby series' were made.

The mysteries were always interesting, and I disagree entirely on what you said about them. There were many episodes in which the person you'd least expect to be behind them was the culprit.

I'm not expecting everyone to say that it's the greatest of all time. But for someone to say that it doesn't deserve a high rating is absolutely ridiculous and absurb. If it wasn't a great toon, it wouldn't have maintained such tremendous popularity over the last four decades.

Fact is, people STILL love Scooby and few toons can match it's classic status. A show that has "next to nothing going for it" as you said, can't make that claim.

You said it. Really, the standard of animated TV series was pretty low during the 60's and abysmal during the 70's and 80's, so it's no wonder that most shows with high rankings on this list were made in the last 20 years. And yeah, had this been a list of the best animated short films intead, i'd be willing to bet that all films in the top ten would have been made prior to the 60's.

Nothing wrong with the animation? Sorry, but that's a matter of factual inaccuracy. The animation was cheap - they reused sequences in every episodes - and, aside from Scooby, it barely moved. It was the 1960s, but stuff like Looney Tunes, Disney Shorts and the original Tom & Jerry shorts were made before then, and they still looked beautiful, so that's no excuse.

And you're right, it often was the person you'd least expect... in fact, it was always the person you least expected. You could figure out the mysteries just by picking the person who had the least stated reasons for doing the crime.

Saying it had "next-to-nothing" going for it was hyperbolic, you're right - it did strengths. But it still had so many flaws, many of them brought on by Hanna-Barbera themselves that comparisons with, say, Tom & Jerry (by the same people) aren't just uneven - they're unfair, to either show.

(Also, sorry about accusing you of insulting people - I thought you were trying to say the only reason people would dislike SB was because they were too young, but I may have misread your comment.:))

Yeah I realize that only 22 voted, but I find myself disagreeing with a lot of people on this site.

Sadly, Family Guy is gonna beat it although it doesn't deserve to. I was hoping that Looney Tunes would be at least Top 5 and probably deserves to be number one objectively. FG is in the teens for me at best, while LT is my 3rd favorite behind Scooby Doo and Tom & Jerry. The Cartoon is right, it probably would have made Top 5 if not for the confusion about shorts, but I voted for it anyway.

Even though I'm a huge Avatar fan, I think it should get this spot... And Futurama in 4th instead.

(Not that I'm complaining) :D

That post is 100% complete blasphemy!

I can think of plenty of funny lines and episodes, I just didn't feel like typing them. Hanna-Barbera (even before being bought out by Warner Bros) was one of the biggest cartoon studios around. They had TONS of time and freedom. If they didn't, then they would have folded like Filmation did. Only Disney and Warner were bigger, and HB was king of Saturday morning inparticular.

I've seen all of those shows you mentioned, and Scooby is just a much of a classic as Twilight Zone and Star Trek. Lost is overrated IMO. What I like most about Scooby Doo is that it combines comedy with suspense.

I don't care if you dislike Scooby, but for you not to be able to see why so many people love Scooby is closed minded on your part.

Sorry for bringing up the whole confusion about theatrical short film series again, but it would really have been interesting to see how this list would have turned out if all such series were allowed (and people knew that they were). I think the Donald Duck series would have been in the top 10, and the Mickey Mouse series would probably have been in at least the top 20. I also think that Popeye would have been on the list somewhere, and i at least hope that Betty Boop and Felix the Cat would be so as well.

Oh, and if internet cartoons were also allowed, i know that i at least would also have hoped for Salad Fingers to get a spot.

It's all right, just remember next time someone does a top 50, explicitly say what's allowed and what isn't allowed. Leave no doubt. :)

Actually, HB was a very cheap studio. The 70s and 60s were hard times for american animation in general and american TV animation in particular, so all of their shows tend to feature looped animation, re-used backgrounds, character's that are only slighty re-modeled versions of other characters (Scooby is modeled off Astro) and similar plots.

Never saw Tom & Jerry when I was a kid, and I guess it's just not the same without the nostalgia, 'cause I can't really get into it....

Spider-Man TAS should've been higher up. TSSM's better, yes, but TAS is still great!

Fair enough. ;)

#52 Beavis & Butthead
#51 Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law

I haven't seen either show except for a brief glimpse of Beavis & Butthead. And wow, those are 3 wasted minutes of my life I'll never get back. (Sorry fans of the show) :p Now back to the normal countdown.

#38 Yogi Bear

Here's a classic that I have very fond memories of. Yogi has become an icon over all of these years and is one of Hanna Barbera's finest.

#37 Superman: The Animated Series

Not quite at the level of B:TAS, but still awesome. I haven't seen a ton of it, but I've loved what I have seen. I do find Superman's main enemies much more bland than Batman's and and that may be one of the differences, but either way nothing should be taken away from it.

#36 The Flintstones

Another H-B classic that I have very fond memories of. It may be their most famous creation next to Scooby and for good reason. The series always remained consistent through it's long run.

#35 Penguins of Madagascar

This one is becoming one of my favorite new series. It's not often where you like a Spin-Off of a movie more than the movie itself like this. And I love Madagascar. What they've done with my favorite characters (The penguins obviously) in the series is great. I hope the show has a long life.

Huh? How can anyone accurately compare Scooby-Doo and Futurama? The 2 shows have nothing in common; they are each aimed at completely different audiences, represent completely different genres and offer completely different sensibilities. That's like comparing Dora the Explorer and The Colbert Report or a kazoo and a Gibson guitar.

This, at the core, is why I usually steer clear of lists like this: ultimately it just comes down to people saying "X show is better than Y show!" "No, Y show is better than X show!", regardless of whether the shows in question are from the same era, represent the same genre or have any true comparable similarities or not, and most of the time they don't.

The problem with the Disney Shorts is that their series only aired on the Disney Channel at a time before it became basic, otherwise I agree, it probably would have been ranked. House Of Mouse made it though, and they show a few classic shorts.

Popeye would EASILY make my Top 50. I almost voted for it on this countdown, but it ranks in the 25-30 area for me.

I loved "Scooby-Doo! Where are you", but I highly disliked "Whats New Scooby Doo!". I grew up in the 90s too! :p I really liked The Scooby-Doo Movies as well and A Pup named Scooby-Doo, but Scooby Doo on Zombie Island remains as my most favorite Scooby-Doo ever! Full Metal Alchemist is quite awesome, I watched it alot when I didn't even like Anime too much!

PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR IS THAT HIGH UP????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? It's a NEW-AGE NICKELODEON show for crying out loud! It CAN'T be good!

Funny, I would say the exact opposite. The thing is, everyone has their own opinion, there really isn't an argument anyone can make against the other show that the other person will agree with. And like Silverstar said, the shows are too different to be compared so I think it's time to let this go and get excited for the Top 4! :D
