Toon Zone Talkback - Nick Acquires Rights for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"

If its already in pre-production, then I'd expect to see a preview reel next year, possibly at the San Diego Comic Con. I think Avatar had one way before it started, so TMNT might also get one.

O Entertaiment is one that does most of CG shows for Nick. Because of that most people think they do new Ninja Turtles series. I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

Somewhat shocking, but not really, looking back over the last few years it was quite clear running the TMNT franchise was becoming a chore for Peter Laird, and his lack of passion for running the franchise and the overwhelming needs of running a multi-million dollar franchise was showing in the TMNT projects. Whatever he does from here on out, I wish him luck.

Ah, no.

I'm not going to get into a debate about how dark that one episode got, because it's irrelevant to the topic.

Comparing TMNT to Batman: The Animated Series is pointless, because this new series isn't going to be 'Batman dark'. The producers have said so. End of story.

O Entertainment has only done Jimmy Neutron (and it's upcoming spin-off show Planet Sheen) and Back at the Barnyard.

The Penguins of Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and the possible Monsters vs. Aliens series are all by DreamWorks Animation.

The franchise itself is iconic...but that's really all that it has going for it now. In Quarter 2 of 2009, 4Kids reported a $0.7 million licensing revenue from TMNT, obviously a very small amount. Now, Mirage probably got a good chunk of that, but really, there's not much money flowing through the franchise right now. The toys are selling pretty poorly and there isn't much other major merchandise except for maybe TMNT: Smash-Up. If this was 1990, then the purchase price would definitely be a ripoff, but I'd say the price is fair given the current state of the franchise. Viacom/Nickelodeon essentially have to rebuild the property by themselves.

As for the money split, Mirage got $50 million, 4Kids got $10 million.

That's a possibility of course since we don't know all the details, but I think auctioning off the rights would have made 4Kids more money out of the deal. Could it be they didn't want TMNT to become a DC or Marvel comic book property by selling to Time Warner or Disney?

The Nick TMNT show doesn't have to be "dark" it just has to be a fairly well done action cartoon with good plots, well done characters and characterisation, and engaging storylines.
Something similar to 2k3 but using old toon characters. Looks like all the people who wanted to see a new take on Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady will finally get their wish. Frankly I can't wait to see how new versions of these characters might be.

And a guy who gets bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes a superhero is supposed to be taken seriously?

A guy from an alien planet who can fly and shoot laser beams out of his eyes is supposed to be taken seriously?

A guy who gets all his powers from a green ring and has a weakness to the color yellow is supposed to be taken seriously?

A guy who dresses as a Bat and steals all of Joker's publicity is supposed to be taken seriously?

A bunch of kids who get born with the X-gene and have superpowers is supposed to be taken seriously?

Turtles Forever is still on track to air/release. According to the 4kids rep from the Technodrome, TMNT 2k3 will continue to air on The CW4kids until August 2010.

This deal actually explains the lameduck status of TMNT over the last year. Despite being the 25th anniversary, they were very hush-hush about everything, and left lots of vague hints of the Turtles continuing presence. It might also explain why Back to the Sewers wasn't longer, and why the DTV is dedicated to celebrating the two animated versions of TMNT.

I guess all that's left is to see how Nick will handle the series and whether this will affect Disney's ownership of The Next Mutation and the crossover with Power Rangers.

Not only that, but Tak and the Power of Juju was made in-house at Nicktoons Studios, The Backyardigans and Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends were made by Nelvana, Butt Ugly Martians was made by Mike Young Productions, and Fanboy and Chum-Chum is made by Frederator. So, there is a precedent of computer-animated series not made by O Entertainment on Nickelodeon. In fact, it's the majority.

Is Nickelodeon or 4Kids going to annouce to where the 2003 Series and Turtles Forever movie is going to be distributed?

If so then when dudes? Spill the news!!

Thank you. That's what I've been saying all along. I personally don't care if the new TMNT series is dark or not, just as long as it's an entertaining program.

I'm not sure where you're going with this, Cubed. No one ever suggested that any of those franchises were meant to be taken any more or less seriously than the Ninja Turtles. The fact of the matter is that there's no definitive take on any of those franchises. Those characters can be as light, as dark, as comedic or as serious or whatever their creators want them to be because their (wait for it) fictional characters.

I do hope they make something diffrent of this. But I doubt that will happen.

O'yes, Nickelodeon humor.... I can smell degradation coming this way.

Well, TMNT was a kids show anyway, so maybe I should not be so hard on it.
