Toon Zone Talkback - Nick Acquires Rights for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"

No, I believe the films (and Next Mutation) are the only things left out of this deal (because they're not covered under Mirage and 4Kids).

That's not including the original cartoon, obviously, but now we know they're going to go after that too (HURRY UP LIONSGATE, YOU ONLY HAVE TWO MORE SEASONS TO GO).

God I hope not thats one part of the 80's toon that needs to be buried forever. Rob Paulsen is an great talent and would be welcome to be on the cast but not as Raph. Back as a kid I hated 80's toon Raph. Mikey, Leo and Don I loved but I couldnt' stand Raph it wasn't tell I saw the movie and read the Archie and Mirage comic tell I saw what a great character he could be.

As for the deal itself I hate the fact that it pretty much killed the comics to tell the truth I wasn't impressed with Volume Four but the fact that it pretty much killed other people's projects like Forever War and the Mirage Source Book as well any collections. That and the fact that the new show is in CGI frankly I've never been impressed with CGI shows. Clone Wars was the best I have seen and really its not even that impressive it doesn't beat traditional animation. I hope things aren't cemented and Nick goes a diffent route from CGI.

Yeah, that's the other thing I don't get.

What business does Nick care if Mirage produces paper back's? Do they now own all the rights to the back comics as well or does Peter keep those?

What a lack luster 25th anniversary. IF all this had been done in January, maybe all these projects could have been better organized and seen completion.....

Yes, they have the rights to do whatever they want with the 4Kids series (except, by contractual obligations, air them due to 4Kids holding the airing rights until next fall).

Even the latest commercial for Turtles Forever has a Viacom copyright on it, so I'm absolutely certain they can release it. The question is when and if they want to.

Edit: Seems the Ninja Turtles site has one final update...

Nothing related to the deal, just archiving that they indeed did one more update after their farewell message. Though, it is a pretty nice figure...

Are you sure? They now own the entire TMNT IP, lock, stock, and barrel. I wouldn't be surprised if this extends to the movies, as well as the new live-action movie in 2011.

Makes me wonder if Lionsgate will still hang on to the old cartoon, or if they'll let Viacom buy it out for an insane price.

Sketch informed me that NinjaTurtles.com has been updated to say…

“The Turtles have gone underground…”
“Get ready for TMNT action in 2011!”

“Only on Nickelodeon”

So, is Nicktoons going to wait until sometime next year to air the 2003 4Kids series, or will the new Nickelodeon series be coming earlier than the planned 2012 launch?

Either way, the Nicktoons premiere of Turtles Forever on Monday night helped them to a great total day win against Disney XD with kids 2-11, 6-11 and tweens 9-14.

Nick usually doesn't announce a project unless it's already been greenlit, so it looks like the new series will be CGI, like it or not.

How appropriate Rob Paulsen would be depends on how the producers intend to depict Raphael in this series. Paulsen's voice worked out fine for the 80's Toon version of Raph, who was more of a wise-cracking smart-aleck, but it wouldn't fly so well on the 2003 version, who was edgier and and more pugnacious.

Raph was my favorite turtle in both series, but they are 2 very dissimilar interpretations of the character. Again, which voice would be better depends on which version of Raph they choose to go with.

Did you even watch the episode? Splinter was already dead but Don meet, Mikey (who was missing an arm) Raph (who was missing an eye) and Leo and we saw all of them die as well as Shredder, Karai, Hun and Stockman. Besides name something B:TAS got away with that the 2k3 series didn't.

When do you think we might see concept art for the new show? I know 2012 is still a heck of a ways off, but I kinda hope we see previews posted online on some Nick owned TMNT site somewhere.

Heres some more news appently there working on the pilot Monday .

Dont know if thats enough time to meet a 2011 deadline I'm unsure about the time the animation proccess takes. So it might mean the 2K3 series is going to air on Nickelodeon. I hope we will be getting some awnsers about the the future plans on the franchise soon.

Nick wasn't at fault for Forever War it got cancelled before the buyout. The writer had some sort of breakdown or something cut the book from five issue to three then just left the project entirely. The collected volumes from Archie and Mirage and the Mirage Turtle source book those are something to cry over. Whats scary is what if the comics never get reprinted ever again as long as Viacom owns them thats what I'm worried about.

Here's the thing.

Why does everybody think O Entertainment's going to be the producers of the new series? I haven't seen anything that said otherwise nor have I heard Steve Odenkirk's involved in the new series. That's not to say that O Entertainment's a bad company, mind you, but whose to say that they won't outsource the animation production to another studio, perhaps even bring it to Canada via someone like Nerd Corps (Storm Hawks, League of Super Evil, Hot Wheels Battle Force Five) or Rainmaker (the company that took over the legacy and libraries of Mainframe Productions and currently working on the rebooted ReBoot)?

I hope these series has a little influence from series like Gargoyles and X-Men, in addition to the Mirage Comic book. For example how about an episode when they turn human for a day, and one of them falls in with a girl when he is in human form.

Musings about the sale

This evening, my daughter Emily wisely advised me to make a statement about the MTVN/Viacom/Nickelodeon buyout of the TMNT property on my blog... so I am going to try to do that. I suspect it won't be the last statement I will make about this subject.

I will try to touch on some of the things that folks have inquired about, but I can't guarantee that all questions will be answered.

First, why did I sell the TMNT? There are a number of reasons, but first and foremost is that I have been doing this TMNT thing for twenty-five years, sixteen of them in partnership with TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman and the last nine as sole owner of the property. That is a long time. It is almost half my life (I'm 55). I never expected to be working on the same thing for this long. And it has worn me down. I am no longer that guy who carries his sketchbook around with him and draws in it every chance he gets. That guy did all of the pre-TMNT artwork you have been seeing on this blog in many of my "Blast from the Past" posts.

I miss -- I really, really miss -- being that guy.

My fervent hope is that by divesting myself of this wonderful but needful-of-constant-attention property, I might -- I just MIGHT -- get back to being that guy. Or something LIKE that guy.

It will come as no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention that my energy level for things TMNT has flagged in these last few years. As one result, the production of TMNT Volume 4 comics has slowed to a crawl. That's not good. I have a conclusion planned out for that series, and at some point I want to get to it. Maybe this sale will help me get to that point. We'll see.

The idea of a sale of the TMNT property to a third party is not a new one. Kevin and I, while we were still partners, discussed it during the 1990's and actually came to the conclusion that if the right deal came our way, we would take it. We got a couple of offers -- one of which was, in retrospect, pretty decent, and another which was simply ludicrous and insulting. We took neither of them. This one, this sale which was completed on Monday of this week, came out of the blue. I was not actively pursuing selling the property, though Gary (CEO of Mirage) and Fred (my attorney) knew that it was something I might be interested in should the right buyer with the right deal come my way. And then Viacom/MTVN/Nickelodeon showed interest and we started talking.

I've known for a long time that at some point in my life I would sell the TMNT. I just wasn't sure when it would happen. But, as they say, in this case "the stars lined up".

I know that many fans are concerned with how the TMNT will be treated now that they have a new owner. I am also concerned, but I have faith that the new owner will treat the property with due respect and make the most of it. And the simple fact is -- I didn't have it in me any more, and the property DESERVED a new owner. Now it has one, with powerful roots in the entertainment business. I am actually quite excited to see where they take TMNT.

I am pretty certain that what Viacom/MTVN/Nickelodeon will do with the TMNT is NOT going to be what I would have done with it had I kept ownership. But is that necessarily bad? I think not. For example, if Kevin and I had had our way back in 1987, the original TMNT animated series would have been a lot different. It would probably have been a lot more like the 2003 4Kids show. Now, I really like the newer 4Kids series, but I also know that many fans much prefer the lighter, goofier original series. I don't know what the new Nickelodeon series will be like... but maybe it will be something better than either of the old shows, or simply something new and different, with a fresh approach and attitude. I think everyone should wait and see before passing judgment.

One comment -- which I have seen online several times -- expresses the sentiment that this sale will mean "the end of TMNT". This baffles me. Unless I am completely naive, the sale to Viacom could very well mean a brighter future for the TMNT property than was previously feasible.

On a final note (at least for this statement), please understand that I sold the TMNT property, not Mirage Studios. Mirage still exists, and it's still my company. It just doesn't own the TMNT intellectual property anymore. I'm not sure what its future will be. For a little while, it will be helping with the transition of TMNT over to its new owners. But after that...? I don't know. What I am hoping, however, is that this little core group of creators sticks together, both as friends and collaborators. And I think that is certainly possible. -- PL"

Until they bomb and Nick sweeps them under the rug, never to be seen ever again.

And Nick/Viacom isn't one to sell off anything, so once it's dead, it's dead for good. Locked jealously in the vaults, never to be seen again out of spite for all who may have actually wanted to see it or maybe make a profit off it.
