Toon Zone Talkback - Dreamworks to produce live-action Ghost in the Shell

You know how with CG graphics, artists add blemishes to CG faces to make them more "real"?
The actress for Motoko, whoever she ended up being, could probably intentionally have her features "cleaned up" on screen to offer a more synthetic look. It just doesn't make sense for designer bodies to have blemishes of any sort.

I totally agree with you. Despite the fun I've had in this thread, I don't see any point in "live actioning" something that already has worked so well in animation.

It just goes to show Hollywood has nothing to do now but to basically crib from comic books and animation.

I'd say this is long overdue. This probably should have been the FIRST live-action anime. That said, I have to wonder how American audiences will respond to this. The whole "hot secret-agent girl in tight-suit doing flips and jumping off buildings" thing has kind of been done to death in recent years. Even if this was the first story to actually have it.

I've seen a few girls with purple hair. It looks fine, as long as it's not some cheap dye with someone who has bad hair. I imagine a Hollywood budget would look even better.

The thing is besides otakus, no one cares about that. Hollywood doesn't care about that, they want instant stories that have already have been tested in other medium, the Japanese creators don't care, because the Hollywood people give them a lot of money. The general audience won't care because they haven't seen the Anime.

The thing is many otakus are even harder to please than comic book fans, so they are easier to ignore.

Anime is big Japan, but Hollywood movies are king in America, that's what Joe Six Pack cares about and that's who Hollywood want to impress, not otakus. These aren't some losers like 4kiRAB you are dealing with.

Still I think if Steven Speilberg made Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, I think he can handle Ghost in the Shell.

I think with manga adaptions you will get the same hit or miss track record (though the translation issues do present a problem.)

Not really the same. No one's asking you to buy the same show's DVD every week for eternity. Merchandise went up, and you can bet DVD's of the TV shows will do well.

Ex = Speed Racer movie will probably inspire more sales of DVD collections.

So is Pokemon the movie "superior" to "There Will be Blood?"

Will they? After The Ring, The Grudge, Dark Water, and One Missed Call, have Japanese horror films really gotten big with the general public?

Does that mean you find 99% of Japanese animation weird? I mean, characters like Naruto don't exactly look Asian to me (though Rock Lee does). I can only think of a few Japanese cartoons that draw Japanese characters to reserable Asians (Grave of the Fireflies, for example)

I'm talking about live-action, not animation. Animation can be stylized while live-action can not.

As mentioned above, it's likely that most people who watch this movie won't know of the source material, so for those unfamiliar with Motoko's (or any other character in GitS for that matter) original design, it will feel weird seeing in a live-action film, a character with an obvious Japanese name being portrayed by an obviously Caucasian actress. Maybe Spielberg will change the names, I don't know, we'll have to wait and see how true he stays to the source material.

But I'll say this. Based on what I've seen in Spielberg's films, unless the character gets a name change, I'm expecting Motoko to be portrayed by an Asian.

Aeon Flux was a God awful movie that borabed terribly. Also, the show was overrated.

No. But do I enjoy Ghost In The Shell more than THERE WILL BE BLOOD? Yes. Also keep in mind, There Will Be Blood only made decent money because of all the Oscar awarRAB and the rave reviews. Had it not been for that buzz it wouldn't have made as much as it did. Basically I'm saying, usually dramas like that aren't that mainstream and popular.

Where's your proof these movies can make money translated into the live action medium with a totally different type of audience for the most part?

Balogna.

Anime and anime movies are not like Hollywood movies which are king in America.

He couldn't handle Munich and AI.

I doubt most movie-goers will care that much about a Caucasian woman having a Japanese name. Names are just that, names, which can be given to anyone of any ethnicity. Karasu is the Japanese word for crow, but it's also a city in Europe. Names like Aeon, Neo, Trinity, I doubt people cared about analyzing those names or their ethnicity when they watched the films. Same with Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan always being referred to with their English names, despite being Chinese.

I'd consider appearance a lot more important than race. Naruto wouldn't be Naruto without his blue eyes and blond hair. They were drawn a specific way, so I feel that should be top priority when translating it into live-action, if that's Caucasian, than so be it.

I don't see what that has to do with a casting suggestion Though I was mistaken and listed her VA in the cartoon, when I meant Charlize Theron from the movie.
