Toon Zone Talkback - Dreamworks to produce live-action Ghost in the Shell

Off topic, I guess, but Robert Rodriguez has an "obscene amount of range", and Tarantino is "one note"??

Have you got that backwarRAB? I see more variety in "tone and style" in Death Proof then I do in Planet Terror.

QT followed up Jackie Brown with Kill Bill. There aren't many tonal or stylistic similarities between the two, I don't think.

I love RR, but if he has an obscene amount of range then QT's range is infinite.

I hope you all aren't assuming that Spielberg is directing this simply because it's Dreamworks. I suppose he could, but I'd be surprised if he was the one who ended up directing it.

QT's never directed a kid's film where as RR had, and QT incessantly referential in everything he does. I'll give you that by pace QT's experimented more, but only because he's switching up styles to reference someone else. When QT can do something that's not referential, I'll give him more cred.

But yeah, RR does stick to action. He can switch the story and tone that leaRAB to that action up though, albeit with mediocre results at points (SharkBoy & LavaGirl.) However, Desperado is completely different than SpyKiRAB other than the action element. Both are nothing like Sin City.

... or destroy it.

what's the best that could happen? can a movie like this really be improved? i am going to remain cynical and hope (just a little) to be surprised.

The movies weren't perfect: a bit dry in some places, and they took themselves a bit too seriously. Now, if this live-action movie is modeled more on Stand Alone Complex than the original movies, then it would very likely be an improvement.

According to Stand Alone Complex (I'm not sure if it's in the original manga or not, never read it) Togusa has a family, so it could happen if they decide to stick close to that. (especially if they do something similar to the laughing man case in which Togusa played a major role in.)

As it happens I agree with you, Rodriguez has a larger range as a director than Tarantino who has his thing as you said, but it comes out similarly in every movie. That said, Death Proof was better than Planet Terror.

Spielberg I think is the opposite, you can always tell when he is doing a movie--he's incapable of curbing his signature urges/style to make a better film. His style isn't as out there as Tarantino, but it's of the same order.

Range is not necessarily a measure of quality. Just because you can do a lot of genres doesn't mean you're a master at any one of them.

I feel this way with Spielberg. No matter how many movies I watch of his, I just don't "get" why he's so highly regarded. I respect his craftsmanship, but I don't see him as some sort of "artist" or "auteur".

Of course, this is really just all opinion.
