Toon Zone Talkback - Dreamworks to produce live-action Ghost in the Shell

When this film comes out (And it will, because Spielberg will make it happen), I will probably try to strangle the first noob who claim it ripped off The Matrix.

There's a part of me that hates the idea of any of these shows becoming live action movies at all. Especially HOLLYWOOD live action movies.

Bleh to Aeon Flux and Ultraviolet crud.

To me, what I like about a lot of anime is that I find it superior to a lot of Hollywood garbage and even live action movies. And the things they do in animation that you could never see done competently in live action.

I also don't think you can simply cast white people as guys like Ishikawa or Togusa without confusing the audience.

Oh, Spielberg will make it crowd pleasing and accessible, of that I have no doubt, but he's never had it in him to portray darkness or hardness with any kind of conviction. Look at Minority Report and A.I., both of which were otherwise well-made movies that copped out of the darkness when the going got tough.

That reminded me, I hated how humanAndroid interactions are portrayed in A.I.

GitS requires a setting where machines and humanity work together, something Western entertainment media have trouble grasping.

Those didn't have Spielberg working on them, though.

Admittedly Spielberg also worked on Transformers, but that was a property pretty much destined for Michael Bay and GitS isn't.

I'm stumped for Motoko casting ideas, though. Natalie Portman, maybe?

So what? That doesn't mean these can work as live action film pieces.

Also, if its Major MOTOKO KUSANAGI, why does the actress necessarily have to be a white girl?

Because she looks white?

I think Denise Poirier was a great suggustion, Aeon Flux live-action movie seems to fit what a GITS live-action movie would probably be like in terms of over-the-top gun-play action.

Nah, she could pass as Asian quite easily. Even so, we could always bring up the "no real human has purple hair" technicality.

Please, no one associated with Aeon Flux, Ultraviolet, or other box office borabs.

That... takes away everything about Ghost in the Shell right there. Its a good mix of action and political plots and back drops which makes that essential. With Spielburg doing futuristic movies like Minority Report and AI, this is up his ally. Then again if you want someone to get a dark fell to a sci fi future, look no further than Ridley Scott. Look at Blade Runner, thats a perfect example of a sci fi noir.

You know, Charlize Theron would make a good Motoko. I think she pulled off the short haired Aeon in the Aeon Flux movie. Batou could be like Dolph Lundron (havent seen that dude around in a while) or someone to play the physiuqe and role of Batou well. Yea, Dolph has to much an accent, but his build is good.

I just gotta say, its about freaking time for a LA GitS...

I haven't seen Munich yet, but I hear it's pretty darn dark. And I've always considered that Agatha's psychic manipulations are the root cause of the "happy" ending of Minority Report. Can't argue about A.I., though; if it had just ended on that pull-back on the frozen David...

Don't see how that's too big of a deal. Actors dye/cut/shave their hair all the time for roles. Now, if it was Yugi's hair, there might be a problem.. but Motoko's is just typical hair, only purple.

Since it lacks the status of, say, Akira, they're probably waiting to see if the live-action anime trend is the least bit profitable before committing to Death Note (which really neeRAB a trilogy to tell the full story, given how rushed and generally disappointing the second Japanese movie was).

As I said in the anime forum, this movie is going to be unfairly bashed as a Matrix rip-off by people who know nothing about anime.

I don't know about that. Other than the predominant presence of the color GREEN in both franchises, there isn't much about them that are alike. The Matrix is about a universe spanning conspiracy in which...um, people are living in a virtual world created by omniscient aliens? I think.

GITS is more a straight up future world not unlike Blade Runner. So if anything, Blade Runner would be a more obvious comparison. No one said you had to saturate GITS with the color GREEN, so I won't assume that a live action movie will do that.

Anyway, I think most people are familiar with the anime movie in some way or another, so it's not an unknown quantity.

Avi Arad involved in a live action Ghost in the Shell movie? Not sure about that but hopefully the right people will hired, if not then there's always The Wachowski Brothers.

About hair color...

Just want to point out that from GitS MMI manga, Motoko Aramaki can alter both her hair length and color at will. It is hair from a full-body cyborg, after all.

As long as we establish that Motoko's hair is a synthetic material rather than organic, hair color would not be an issue to anyone. Neither should her skin color have any relevance, for that matter.

I really don't think the race of the actors matters for characters whose bodies aren't natural anyway. Maybe they should get an Asian guy to play Togusa, but it really doesn't matter for Motoko.

Not to mention Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex airs on Adult Swim, I think people are familiar with that one.

But you know, if Hollywood keeps this up, Anime sales are going to go through the roof.
