TomTom Mobile 5 GPS receiver package for Nokia 6620

Thats one of those things you shouldn't skimp on. If you don't have any satellite signals, or the unit doesn't last for very long, then your whole GPS package is useless. Spend the extra money on a sirfIII chipset receiver -- its highly superior to every other chipset.
 
I have a question on the TomTom installation. Am I supposed to copy all necessary files to my 1 GB MMC and install it from there ? or do I need to install it through Nokia PC Suite ?

And what about the Navigator maps, should I put them all into the MMC with the TomTom Mobile before the installation ?

Can I create a folder on the MMC and put the TomTom Mobile 5 & Navigator Maps into it ? or they all have to be on the root drive of the MMC separately ?

Just to confirm, is it a must to keep the UK maps come with the TomTom Mobile 5 to make it work ? If not, I will delete it as I dont need it in Toronto and it takes another 120mb.......

Does the TomTom Mobile 5 only works with Nagivator 5 maps ? I think a friend of mine has the Navigator on his PDA but I am not sure what version does he have ?

thanks for the setup guide i know i will be refering to it when i get my bt338, oh and the provinces are very detailed just that i'm guessing the detail stops where the popluation density stops, most people in canada live close to the boarder, i don't think the yukon and nunavut will have great street detail
 
Here's how it works. Get the TT Mobile applcation (on its MMC) and install it in your phone. Run the application and it will work with the maps for what ever country you purchased.
Get he TT Navigator for US (or what ever country you want.) Run the TT Nav installer on your computer. There will be an option to install additional components (voices, maps, etc). Select this. You will be asked to select the map you want and then where to install them. Since the TT Nav is intended for a Palm or PocketPC the installer will default to installing the files in the respective sync folder. However, there is an option to install the files to a folder or a memory card. Take your TT Mobile MMC card and install it in a card reader connected to your computer. Tell the TT Nav installer to copy the maps to the MMC card. You could also tell the TT Nav to copy the map to a folder on your hard disk and then move that to the MMC using the Nokia copy utility. I find the card reader much faster and easier. Once it finishes put the MMC card back in the phone and start the TT application.

In the preferences, change to the map you just installed. Do not remove the original map from the MMC as it will cause problems with the application's activation system.

So, I guess I should copy all TT Mobile 5 files (including the UK maps) into my MMC, and do the installation from there.

And keep the UK maps in the 6620 to avoid the registration problem. But do I need to install the UK maps like you mentioned for the US & Canada maps installation on PC ?

For the US & Canada maps, do I need to put them all in the root directory of the MMC ? or it is ok to put them with the TT Mobile 5 folder I am going to create in my MMC ?

Ditto that - I just got off the phone with their sales/tech guys today - they said there's no Mobile 5 product with NA maps...

If you're getting the SW from someone off of eBay then you're getting scammed...
 
Yes, move all the Everything on the TT Mobile MMC to your larger MMC. Any additional maps should be in their own folder in the root level of the MMC. The TT Nav installer will create a folder with the correct name. If I understand your question correctly, the TT mobile product is supplied as an MMC with everything already installed on it. (you need more than just the ttmobile.app file) I think the TTM for UK is about 100mb total. The card is only as big as its needs to be for the given country you purchase. For that reason, its best to get a 512mb or 1gb MMC and copy everything from the TTM card to the new one. You will then have plenty for space of additional maps. The TT Nav maps are broken in into regions or individual states. For example, the Northeast US includes, everything from Maryland to Maine. All of Canada is one map. You can install as many as will fit on the MMC, and just select the map you want from the preferences. There is also a Major highways of the US map. The TTM will not automatically switch from one map to another. So, its not possible to do an address to address route coast to coast.
It sure would be nice if TomTom released the Mobile 5 for the US but until they do we're stuck buying 2 products and jumping through hoops.

TomTom doesn't need to. It just changes how the receiver calculates coordinates.

Be aware that WAAS isn't turned on by default. You have to load their GPSView utility onto a pocketpc to turn it on (why they didn't provide a Win32 version, I have no clue). They disabled it because they said in certain cases (no mention of which ones), it gives you less accuracy...
 
Let us all know how it workes out. I'm particularly interested in finding out the details about how you got the NA maps working on Mobile 5 on Nokia.

In the root of my MMC, I have the Canada-map folder, and it still says no maps found.

Could you do a file listing perhaps of what files you have where on your MMC? I'd really like to compare what you have vs. what I have...

Actually, the CD and the web site both have the Win32 version on it.... I ran it last night when I got the receiver - Can't remember if I left WAAS on or not though...
I'll check tonight... I did notice that the receiver put it's location (when sitting in my office) somewhere in the middle of my nighbour's backyard... about 40-50 feet off from where it was actually located..

I found a neat little trick for google maps (ok, maybe not a trick, but I didn't know about it before)
In the search bar, you can put in either the coordinates in degrees/minutes/seconds or in decimal notation...

Such as:

Go to http://maps.google.com
type in the following: +43? 38' 54.49", -79? 23' 6.32"(My coffee shop - Starbuck's)
or in decimal: +43.64847, -79.38509(My Coffee Shop - Starbuck's)

I was also playing around with it this morning, and got a lock on 11 Satellites in the middle of downtown T.O.! Awesome -the TomTom only ever got 6 at most.. It may even have locked more, but the TomTom software only shows 11 slots for Sat signal info..

On a side note, I got my first crash on my 6620 this AM while running TomTom... not very happy about that.. a bit of a strange one too...

TomTom lost the gps signal (actually the receiver did, but TomTom was relaying the info) the screen timed out and went to backlight off mode, then TomTom stopped responding - the phone then went blank, and after about 30 seconds or so, showed the Nokia startup logo, but never asked me for the SIM password when it started - the Clock read 00:00 for about 10 seconds, and when I checked open apps, nothing was open. (when it crashed I left my contacts and TomTom open)

Oh well - nothing's perfect... I'm gonna see if TomTom has an update for this - I'm runnning version 5.000(419) - I think I saw a 5.1.xx update last time I was there..?

I agree, I don't want to skimp out on a GPS unit, but how do we know which ones are compatible with the Nokia 6620 and TomTom w/ USA maps...
Is there some kind of list? Obviously any GPS unit that would work with the Nokia 6620 would need to be bluetooth?
How big are these things? Are they easy to walk around with? Are they ugly?
As you can tell, I am very excited about actually getting this working. Finally, I'll never be lost again!
I do not need or want to purchase any software with it. I just want to compare compatible bluetooth units by themselves.
 
Thanks again. Unfortunately, I am now having problems copying files to my new 1 GB MMC, couldn't do it through card reader or through Nokia PC Suite.

Through card reader, an error message pops up & says "can't create/replace folder, need to specify path...." something like that...... not sure is my card reader problem. After the failed copying process, the MMC will show FULL in the PC. When I put it back to the 6620, I see a couple folders in there with a couple files.......and that's it........

Through PC Suite "Transfer files"/ "Installer" can seem to find those target files from those folders (e.g. I clicked up till the TomTom folder, but see nothing in there) Someone told me to use the latest Nokia PC Suite version and try again. I am going to do it tonite.........
 
It HAS to be Navigator5 for PocketPC maps, no other map files will work. You don't have to do anything special to make them work, as long as thy are Navigator 5 for PocketPC maps, just drop them into the root MMC folder and TomTom5 should automatically add them.

Update:
The Holux receiver is going well, and picks up signal where the TomTom doesn't - that being said, I do have one gripe - however minor....

The power switch... it's kind of cheap, and moves a bit too easily. I've been carrying it around in my front trousers pocket, and I can accidentally turn it off by just putting it in my pocket - the side rubs against the fabric of the pocket, and that's enough to make it turn off... The TomTom has a nice, solid switch that never turned on or off as it pleased...

Oh well - guess I'll have to break out the duck tape. (it's a Canadian thing).

Stick it in the card reader and use WinZip on the drive/MMC to back it up, then unzip it to the new MMC.
That's what I use to back up my MMC (I actually use command line zip but it's the same concept :-)

You can right click on the drive and run chkdsk on it as well when it's in the reader. You might have a corrupted MMC, so do the backup first...
