TMNT Talkback "Turtles Forever" (Spoilers)

It's easier for me to see the "Eighties Turtles" that appeared in his movie as similar to the 88 toon turtles but not the exact 88 turtles. Yeah I know that was not the intention but that could explain their simplified personalities. In that way we don't have to speculate when in the 80's turtles did this adventure take place because it does not matter.

Really if there are infinite Turtles universes as is stated in the plot of the movie, then there are probably many universes similar to the 80's Turtles, and this was just one of them and not the exact universe.

That's just my take on it, I know that was not the writer's intention.

Hm, usually the animation and production values are something that the show gets praised for. Sure the production qualities spiral downwards from Season 5 on, but especially in Season 3, there were times when the show looked absolutely great.

*I've* never heard this complaint about the show before, so...

The 4Kids rep at the Technodrome has hinted at Nightmares Recycled coming out a number of times. And yeah it was pretty last-minute that Fox put the kaebosh on the episode.

I do like to think this fits into the 80's toon timeline. Shredder/Krang have big ego's and probably changed the Technodrome back to what it once was.

This was fun, really fun. There were a few things that annoyed me about the interpretation of the 80’s Turtles but they were minor. Like one annoyance was how they just ran though new York in day light with out a care. Even in their world they would put on disguises when they went out for Pizza. Also while the Robo foot were always easy to defeat they use to not be THAT easy. They blew up like the second they were touched.

Yes the movie did take too many shots at the 88 turtles and their universe sometimes to the point where it was annoying, like when we actually went to the 88 universe and April was being chased by Mutant Pizza, bowling balls, Bananas and leprechauns at the same time. Maybe one at a time would have worked but at the same time? No.

Oh Don East I actually LOVED the scene when Hun tells 88 Raph he’s talking to nobody. Because the old toon did have a lot of fourth wall moments where the characters usually Raph would go and make a comment to the audience.

Like I said before for the most part the voice acting for the 80’s characters was decent. For the most part 4kids did a good job imitating the old show’s voices. Some were perfect, most were good and some like Krang were passable but just felt wrong. The only horrible eighties voice was Leo. Dan Green was just a poor choice for 88 Leo.

I think Utrom Shredder is suppose to be crazy in this movie. I got the idea that his exile to that icy rock drove him mad with vengeance. This is why his overall plan was nuts. He was so bent on vengeance that he was willing to kill himself just to end the Turtles. So chances are he felt the pain when he was crushing the comic turtles but he is so blinded by vengeance and insanity that he did not let that stop him.

TMNT Talkback "Turtles Forever" (Spoilers)

So much to say, so lets get to it:

While I guess I should have expected it, given past history, I was still a bit surprised that '88 April and Splinter, and new toon Tokka and Rhazar got little more than cameo appearances. Still, given how packed the whole thing was, I don?t see how they could have beefed up their roles without making them seem tangential.

The turtles' brief stay on Earth-88 was handled well, except for one minor nit-pick: seeing pre-mutant Bebop and Rocksteady as extras (although I?ll accept the explanation that it was a nod to similar continuity errors in the original toon). And while the original toon may have never featured anything as silly as a team-up between mutant leprechauns, bowling balls, and bananas, it was more effective than seeing a more standard villain would have been.

Speaking of the old toon, I think the cartoon adecuately presented them for the most part, given the time constraints. Raph came out the best, while poor Leo had nothing to do. And while there were things that I thought were off?the noogies, the anti-Technodrome gear?I appreciated the lack of anything as offensive as the scene where the turtles systematically trash April?s apartment in the first toon?overall, they were sillier, but smarter.

So it turns out that "Peter Laird" at the end was actually...Peter Laird, or at least his voice. So sweet. I wonder who the body doubles were.

I'm a bit surprised to see Hun actually remained a mutant at the end of the movie. Given how badly he took it, it seemed a bit too dark an end for a character that's been here since the beginning of the series, particularly given the overall tone of the movie.

Favorite guest-star: '88 Shredder. Every scene with him was gold, particularly when paired with Krang.

The movie had a lot of laugh-out-loud moments: Hun's fourth wall denial moment, anything with Uncle Phil and Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady's save the world moment, April's quicky kidnapping, and the idea of the trash can as "the ultimate weapon", Mirage Leo's narration.

Voice-acting-wise, I'll give it a B. While some actors were more successful than other in replicating the original's voices, or at least coming up with their own adequate spin on them, it was overall quite good. The two biggest surprises were Sebastian Arcelus as a surprisingly spot-on Raph (which I would have thought would be the hardest to replicate), and Jason Griffith/Adam Caroleson as an awesome Mirage Leo. Honorary mention goes to Load Williams, who while not able to replicate James Avery, still made an awesome ?88 Shredder. Even Dan Green?s Leo grew more tolerable as the movie went along. And while Pat Fraley?s Krang remains untouchable, I did appreciate that his weird bodily noises remained intact?although I would have liked to see Braford Cameron attempt his trademark laugh.

Visually, however, this was a treat. While I?m sure most would have appreciated a return to the style of seasons 1-5, the more recent look worked well here?it?s the best the show?s been animated since season 4. Plus, as the previews indicated, the two alternate Earths look spot on. The ?88 have never looked better.

All in all, the best possible way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the turtles. Thank you, Peter. Thank you Kevin. Thank you, Lloyd. Thank you, 4Kids.

Likely next month, when they put the uncut film on their site.

And, Bebop's human form was headed in the opposite direction. ^_^

He wasn't immune. It was explained in an edited-out scene.

1984 Shredder = David Wills
1988 Shredder = Load Williams

You're absolutely correct... except maybe for the cause of his insanity. I think he's always been pretty damn nuts.

Hun was always Greg Carey. The only times it was questionable were his appearances in the Ninja Tribunal season and that Fast Forward ep. They just forgot to pitch-shift his voice like they did with Scottie Ray in "Exodus" Part Two. Remember, Ch'rell's voice was previously chipmunked up when out of his biosuit. And, even though Mansley (Bishop) was supposed to be voicing Hun for BttS, they obviously got Carey back before his eps were broadcast... unless Mansley's just the greatest impersonator who ever lived.

Sure, they would. Technically, Pete's always been hesitant to have anything to do with promoting the classic 'toon because it was so far off from his original vision. So, it's a bit of a sore spot on his ego. Actually, that might even be why the 1988 Turtles were relentlessly ridiculed in this. They got off light. Imagine if there was no Next Mutation showing him the important lesson that it could have been worse. :P

That was supposed to be revealed in the next season along with The Shredder Wars, but that's not going to happen now.

The Next Mutation! It's so worthless, it didn't even get an appearance in the multiverse scene. :P

Don't get your hopes up. The uncut version of the film will likely be put on 4kids' streaming servers next month though.

GPS... No, I'm serious. They so went there.

That was also '88 Don.

I prefer to think that it was just because '88 Shredder didn't spell 'Krang' in the Utrom character set, and that's why his Xoogle search came up empty. :P

Hun and the guy with the dog were the only Purple Dragons to get mutated. The rest were spared as Hun had donated all the mutagen to Ch'rell before he got the chance to do any more experimenting with it. The guy shown mutating into Rahzar is seen wearing a Foot uniform.

Now, for everyone trying to wedge this into continuities, ask yourselves this: Who produced it? Officially, it's their adventure. For the other two universes, it rewrites the story. There's no way around that. However, at what point in the Fred Wolf series those Turtles come from is a tad ambiguous. Since the events that brought them to the 4kids universe seem to be the events of the final battle in episode 5, I'm guessing it spins of from that point, much like Archie TMNTA universe spun off from an incomplete Eye of Sarnath saga.

Well, about how close "Nightmares Recycled" is to being a finished episode, that info was from a private message that I can't find now. So, that makes it a 'take my word for it or don't' issue. But, I think this is as good as we'll get to confirmation that it will ever be released to the public.

Speaking of that, in the movie, half of what the 1984 shredder and turtles say is copied from the 1st issue of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book.

I didn't think Hun referencing Raph's fourth wall breaking was quite as funny as the awkward silence with Hun staring closely at the screen. That had me in stitches. Long awkward silences are always funny.

25 years of Ninja Turtles. Never thought I'd see the franchise last this long. This movie is the series finale to most of the TMNT universes as the franchise is re-booted for Nick in 2012.

I sure hope they go out with a bang.

TMNT III is a very underrated movie (by TMNT standards). People just hate on it because there's no Shredder.

Nope. Next Mutation got no recognition. Its the only TMNT show Peter Laird doesn't want to acknowledge.

Good news everyone! :)

Thank you 4Kids! Anyway, I spent the day driving to/from a football game, finally got to watch this thing.

I.. I just.. wow. Still digesting everything I just saw, and I can't wait to watch it again. Tons of well-placed nostalgia, and a great sendoff for the current TMNT. Bebop and Rocksteady's role in the ending had me in stitches. Well done.

And I REALLY don't think they have the technology or the know-how to fix it and even with their massive egos they're not going to rebuild it so it doesn't fly anymore. Think of all the times the Technodrome was stuck somewhere, flying would have been really useful and even if they did somehow change it back then they'd someday try to make it fly again out of convenience I'm sure.

So again I say, when they repair the multiverse everything goes back to normal and the status quo of the 3 universes is restored. Why not that? It's a heck of a lot less messy.
