"The Simpsons Movie" Talkback (Spoilers)

Wow, that was awesome.

So many great moments, but I have to say the Burns moment in the end credits almost had me on the floor.

One of the things I just LOVED about the movie was how they took advantage of the PG-13 rating and had the family do things they could NEVER get away with on tv...such as having Homer flip everyone off (my favorite part), show Otto using a bong, and of course Bart's doodle shot...even Marge's "Will someone throw the GD bomb!" got everyone into hysterics.

I think a lot more background/other characters should have been used. Barely any Moe, Ralph, Skinner/Agnes/Krabbapple/Chalmers, Milhouse/Kirk/Luanne, Burns/Smithers, absolutly no Gill and the only Willy was Bart's.

WORST MOVIE EVER! (Well, maybe not that bad, but it was pretty awful)

Okay, so I consider myself a pretty decent die hard Simpsons fan. I've watched the show for about seven, eight years now and have the DVDs. I've since caught up with every episode, watch the DVDs with commentaries, and collect some of the merchandise.

This movie was not for me. This movie was for people who have never watched an episode of "The Simpsons" in their life. They tried too hard to appeal to teenagers and dumbed down the movie, in my opinion, by rehashing certain aspects of the show that have been around for at least fifteen (yeah, I know the show is seventeen years old, going on eighteen).

People were laughing hysterically throughout the entire movie while I don't even think I laughed once. Yes, it was cute and I did enjoy seeing the wonderful animation and the cinematic feel, but the theater experience is what killed me. People are rude and don't know how to behave themselves in a movie theater. If you can't tell, I don't like going to the movies. I'd much rather have seen it at home on my home projector or LCD TV, if just to not have to hear the other people who were constantly laughing at the classic Homer strangling Bart (which stopped being funny about eight years ago) or jokes involving people falling off roofs or jokes that involved Bart's penis or Homer giving people the finger, or whatnot. And people who, if they find something so funny, they feel the urge to repeat it out loud, as if no one was paying attention and they just thought of a new joke.

Now, I didn't completely hate it, because how can you hate something based on a show that you love, but the truth is that almost every television show that is adapted into a movie is a complete disaster. There are exceptions, but it's almost true every time. If you liked the movie, that's fine, but I didn't, you may just have a different opinion of what funny is to you, and I respect that. I applaud the Simpsons team for taking on such an ambitious task, but sadly it didn't work. And honestly, I think I enjoyed Robin Williams's Licence to Wed more than this.

I do plan to give the movie a second chance when it hits DVD (or Blu-ray) and see if watching it privately or with a small group gives off a better experience than a packed theater with annoying teenagers and people who probably don't even know who the Simpsons are.

*1/2 (or as the creator of the thread listed in the poll: I Waited 18 %#@& Years for this Crap?!)

Here's hoping that Rush Hour 3 and Mr. Bean's Holiday are better than this.

i beg to differ. they really didn't take advantage of anything. this was one of the lightest pg-13 films i have ever seen. i remember reading interviews with groening and some of the other producers, and they were all like "ooh, we're going to do something so edgy, so shocking, that you'd never seen it done before on television!" maybe it's just me, but i was expecting them to actually take advantage of the pg-13 rating, especially knowing matt groening's cynical sense of humor.

instead, we get the tired hum-drum 'we gotta save springfield!/let's go on vacation/live in a radically different location episode' plot... albeit, a beautiful and very well written one at that...

...but this time, they added a penis, a middle finger, and a stronger swear word, all which could've been easily done without, which would result in a pg rating, which i'm completely fine with; and were already done by the likes of bob and margrette, aqua teen hunger force, and south park. but i guess those don't really count until the simpsons do it.

alright, i'm done with all that rambling... i still enjoyed it, though.

I think I remember that. And of course, Julie Kavner is credited for doing their voices in the credits. The voice of Kang is also credited, which is odd because there's NO way he appeared in the movie, whereas the other characters were probably all in the mob scene.

Kang and Kodos were originally going to pick apart all of the plot holes in the film during the end credits, which is why he is in the credits.

Dude... you don't happen to live in St. Paul, do you? Because that's EXACTLY what happened at my screening too. There'd be a joke and after it was over someone in the audience would repeat it! Or, the variant, they'd recite it along with the movie because they've seen it hundreds of times in the commercials/trailers! Or, better yet, saying "Wow!" after a joke was over. Now multiply that times about 20.

What the flying frick?! Don't they have any idea how annoying that is? I'm usually a pretty tolerant guy when it comes to movie theater crowds but some of the people who wouldn't SHUT UP at my screening were just irritating. Apparently they didn't watch the "Please don't spoil the movie by adding your own soundtrack" disclaimer at the beginning.

Ugh. Anyway, as for the movie itself, I thought it was good. Not classic era good, but a fun time and better than the majority of new Jean era episodes. I still have to formulate my thoughts but it entertained me and the movie flew by pretty quickly. Review coming soon from Jave and me (and maybe HellCat).

That would have been funnier than "sequel."

Well, I got what I wanted: more "hit" jokes than "miss," expert comic timing, three-dimensional emotional writing, and one more glimpse of Becky (I'm her only fan). That was fantastic, and I was in awe all through the bus ride home. Then I sat in front of the computer, booted up the Internet and realized: "HEY, THE SIDESHOW BOB SCENE WAS MISSING!"

Aside from that, the only bad part was when Alvin ate Theodore's poo.

OMG!! I just got back from this and it was awesome. I had been waiting to see this movie all day and when the wait was finally over it was great. Memorable lines, well done animation, and some great gags.

My favorites included:

Homer flipping everyone off while trying to dive into the sinkhole
Marge's video to Homer (great acting on Julie Kavners part)
Barts nude scene (Though I was surprised by the length of time we saw his doodle)
The motorcycle scene
The woodland disneylike creatures watching Homer and Marge make love(LOL)

Things I didn't like:

Too short, they could have made it a little longer
The Lisa subplot seemed too tacked on

Again it was great, I want to see it again, the 18 year wait was well worth it.

Wowie wow wow.

I was kind of reluctant when my friend called me up and asked to see the film. As I've said on a few threads, I lost interest in the show after the "Kill the Alligator..." and only tuned in waiting for other shows or when I didn't have as much work at college as usual. So, my expectations were pretty low.

I was pleasantly surprised.

I was impressed that how just about everyone ever outside of characters living elsewhere or dead appeared. People we have seen for, like, a decade were there. Hell, the crashed ambulance was still there from Homer's failed attempt to jump the gorge! I was rather pleased with the memory.

And, I can't help but notice the humor reminded me of the years I was a regular watcher. It was pretty hilarious. I can't really pick anyone moment that stood out overall (but, I was surprised to see Bart's privates for a split second there!). The writing was refreshingly familiar (maybe because Matt was involved?), and the animation was... gorgeous. I noticed that Scott "Futurama" Vanzo was involved in the CGI, which added to the graphics.

What I probably had a problem with most was that we had... what do we call it... jerkass Homer(?) for a while. But, his character arc of becoming the lovable, well-meaning doofus I remember. He did save the city, after all.

*And did anyone else find it strange the mob went from just wanting Homer to preparing to lynch the whole family in, like, two minutes?

Ultimately, I was impressed, pleased and entertained. So, yeah, like the rank said... Classic era style!

For anybody who didn't check the Entertainment Board, The Simpsons ranked $71,850,000. Leaving in the other movies in the $10,000,000 catagory. That much box-office cash beats out Ratatoullie [with a 96% by Rotten Tomatoes] with $47,027,395.

Maggie's already been to the moon ;)

I expected more misdirection. Some of Homer's dialogue while he had the wrecking ball was different, I believe, but I thought there'd be more fake outs. At least the missile thing only ended up being part of Itchy and Scratchy.

Becky as in Otto's ex? I need to see this movie again just to look at the background characters. I think my favorite was either Gabbo (who was shown in the preview) or Chester J. Lampwick.

Nope, I'm in Florida, and the crowds are always annoying as well. And I agree with you about reciting the lines with the characters, a la a group of kids singing the Spider-Pig song with Homer when it came on. Keep it to yourselves!

I was really, really surprised at the movie. Felt it was more like Season 9. Incredible animation, and wonderfully done.
Went with "Classic-Era style".
