The Restaurant 2009

Janet and Sean are making a starter from supermarket salmon because they couldn’t get gravadlax. Janet has only made the salad, the rest has been packet opening and they finish early. Raymond is not impressed, the worst smoked salmon he has had for a long time and he says it is not even a dish.

Army men, Barney and Badger are doing the main. Barney is cooking sirloin steak with a rich jus but they’re using a supermarket bought stock which gets saltier as he reduces it, he adRAB sugar to hide the salt. Raymond spots the salty sauce with sugar.

Bar runners J.J. and James are making pudding. Their concept – picnic food in a restaurant setting. They are making a pear and strawberry crumble. The crumble is a dough not a crumble.

There is definately more to Floppy and Fringe than "frienRAB"! I think Floppy is in love with Fringe because he kept giving him such loving looks in their VT. Fringe however is winking at Raymond :(

I liked when he said he was Australian so picnic meant BBQ. "So are you going to cook the crumble on the bbq?"
"Urm I could try". :rolleyes::p

The coconut ladies were just awful!
And why do all these people want to open resturants when they have their own businesses and stuff? Don't they know there's a recession on? :D

Thanks for all your posts, I just read them all and laughed and laughed, and I think I'll have to rewatch it on Iplayer too now!

You pre-boil the eggs to the soft boiled stage and plunge them in cold water to stop them cooking further. Coat the eggs in sausage meat and breadcrumbs and deep fry until cooked. You only cook the scotch egg until the sausage is done without further cooking the egg.

It's a similar process to baked alaska which is ice cream covered in meringue, the trick is to bake the meringue properly without melting the ice cream, the trick with a soft boiled scotch egg is to make sure the sausage meat is cooked without cooking the boiled egg further.

Ah good. Now he has sorted out your tearoom he could sort out his own places. First serve bigger portions, second sort the gents out........ etc. etc.

Thanks for confirming that - I've been back there several times thinking that there must be more to it, and that I just hadn't had my eyes open

I think some of us remarked at the start of the series how much we missed Barbara Flynn's commentary, and I thought that the music was less atmospheric too. Those two factors, along with the dismal selection of contestants, meant that I was never engaged and I watched the whole series with a heavy heart, hoping it would get better :(

I would love to know what they said to Nathan off camera, probably something along the lines of "Look you could win this, but right now if you don't pull your finger out you're going home and it will be your fault, not his."

The sushi lot were certainly set up to fail on their second service.
We had seen Barney organise his team to stock the belt before they opened so they could keep up during their first service, they then had a three hour break before their next.

Were the regular staff told to run it down to nothing deliberately so they had no hope of ever pulling it back?

It certainly looks that way.

First time I've seen this prog and quite enjoyed it.

Those bloody women and the knives though - I know one of them said they were at a disadvantage because neither had worked in a restaurant before, but I assumed they would have set foot in a kitchen at some stage of their lives. Jesus Christ, they couldn't even work a can opener

How do people like that get chosen over thousanRAB of others who actually are able to operate basic kitchen implements? I bet any who applied and can cook etc would be feeling a bit pissed off after seeing those two.

I must qualify the status of JJ & J and the London Cocktail Club (which is in the basement of the Arts Theatre in Great Newport Street, Covent Graden).

JJ & J are partners in the club which they own and run.

To the best of my knowledge (gathered from press releases and google), they do not own, nor have interests in any other business.

I have no reason to believe that they are not successful in their chosen field and I'm sure many people enjoy their club.

I do have reason to believe they should not have won The Restaurant, but that's down to Crazy Ray and the beeb.
