The one horror film that scared the pants off you as a kid

Many years ago my brother and I sneaked downstairs late one night and watched Night of the Demon (1957 version, based on the MJ James novel). Boy did it scare me!

As an adult however I became a big fan of MR James and most of his TV adaptations - like the books - are pretty scary tales. They usually show them on TV around Xmas.

agree wth a lot of these especially thriller ( was i about nine at the time) what a video. how he made such a thing considering he is such a wuss still amazes me. funny how he turned out looking just like the monster in real life. but that is the only music video in history that everybody HAD to see.

i also agree about IT but three very scary hours for such a lame ending...

and also poltergeist still puts shivers down my spine...

funny how we are not mentioning modern films very much.

I saw Dawn Of The Dead when I was 8 years old, that scared the crap out of me! Especially the scene when Stephen comes out of the lift and leaRAB all the zombies upstairs!  Watched the film again quite recently, and I just find it a bit corny now! :o

The Evil Dead also terrified me when I was a kid, I'm 31 now and still can't watch it! :o

How can a film of recent years scare you when you were a kid? That makes no sense.

Unless perhaps the film is so terrifying that it senRAB ripples of terror through time into your past and so makes your childhood self scared of a film you haven't even seen yet.

I should of made it clear that i was well under the age of 18 at the time lol an 18 y/o sleeping with his parents cause hes scared by a film now thats scary lol.

The film that had the worst effect on me was one on TV. It was one of those triple short stories Murder/Mystery/Suspence and one in particular has a Mother in her basement doing some ritual to bring her dead son back from the grave. Needless to say he came back, but was evil and hated her (I don't remember why) and he tried to kill her. He chased her around the house. I just remember the kid looking evil. He impersonated his Dad's voice on the phone, and I think it ended with him falling to the rocks below. The bit that scared me was the Mum laying at the bottom of the stairs and looking up into the dark and her sons face appearing out of the shadows looming over her. To this day 25 years later I still can't go up dark stairs

I was also scared at the bit I think in Poltergeist (?) when the clown disappears from the rocking chair at the end of the bed.

Yeah I am a total pussy like that when it comes to horror movies. I tell myself "right, Im gonna watch this horror film properly, I'm gonna watch it late at night with no lights on and really scare myself"....then I end up watching it in the afternoon with the sun shining through the window so I dont get scared and I have the rest of the day to get unscared :( pathetic!

Always has to be Salem's Lot for me, I wouldn't sleep on the 'Dracula' side of the room for months, I think I meant under the window - I was only about six!! And I still can't watch the thing without hiding - watched the remake couple of years ago and it didn't even come close to the original. The kid floating at the window  spooksville or what!!

American Werewolf in London is another one of mine - frightened me half to death!!

And everyone I know around my age (31) is absolutely terrified of clowns because of watching either Poltergeist or IT when we were about eight.

I now refuse to watch horror films - no fun at all in scaring myself half to death :o

Good grief, you folks watched a lot of really inappropriate stuff!

I can't remember seeing anything really scary on TV as a child, apart from spooky children's programmes (like "Children of the Stones")

Oh, I did watch a few scary TV programmes like Hammer House of Horror and Armchair Thriller. Some of those were quite creepy. I remember being pretty scared watching "The House That Dripped Blood."

I remember being scared when my older sister told me about the chest-bursting scene in Alien when she saw it in the cinema back in 1979 - the poster for the movie was scary enough.

OMG! I have not seen a woman with the same type of movie taste as me before, ever!

I love Hammer Horror flicks, be it werewolf ones or vampire ones or probably the only zombie one they ever did Plague of the Zombies. Also you mentioned one of the best ever atmosphere driven zombie flicks of all time - Zombie Flesh Eaters. I have a jazzed up modern version of the main theme for this movie performed by Gwar. If your interested PM me.

The one film that still scares the pants off of me is Halloween. I've never quite been able to watch it that much. Don't get me wrong....I love horror films, the fact that Michael Myers NEVER dies does my head in....so I can't watch it. I'm talking the first film. The others are quite poop. The original still gives me the jitters.

The Omen

I was quite young and thought oooh I'll try and scare myself, lights off, tv on loud.

When Peck opens the grave and sees
the dog skeleton
I almost freaked out - lights on, film off :D

Are you kidding? those things werent scary they were stupid. Mind you the sequel to Wizard of Oz (Return to Oz I think it was...had Faruza balk in it) was pretty freaky. Those guys with wheels for feet, and the talking rock-face and the scary woman who had lots of different heaRAB and she took her head off to change it.

Thats because we are discussing films that scared you when you were a kid. So obviously it will involve older films not modern day ones.

i saw a movie when i was about 15 and it terrified me was called last house on the left - horrors dnt particularly bother me but that 1 gave me nitemares 4 weeks!!!! anyone else seen it??

Where in the hell did the "eaa" at the start of my post come from?.
I don't remember typing that as it makes no sense what so ever? lol

EDIT:

Fixed it lol I need to replace this Opera browser as it is faulty and showing stuff that is there one minute and not the next. I might reinstall it. See if that helps any.

I know, I am talking to myself as no one else is listening to my mad babbling :D
