The Official Tool Thread

Tool's art is worth the wait. I don't care how long it is between albums. They get better and better. It's something they have in common with Peter Gabriel, Faith No More, and I can't think of anyone else.

Yeah i have a hard time listening to 10,000 days from beginning to end, it is a great cd and vicarious is one of my favorite songs by them, i just can't get into the whole thing. Aenema on the other hand is great from beginning to end. not one song i would skip.

I love that, it's disturbed and frenzied because you're stuck in the middle of this guys thought pattern. I don't think it's meant to make sense... :hphones:

"The Chosen one, They chose me..."
I love that line as well...

i don't know why 10,000 days get so much flak. it's beautiful to me. to see it live is phenomenal. my only problem with it is that the engineer left it a little muddy in some parts. other than that, it's the perfect next step in their progression of musical expression. it's just so wide open. and it still abides by their sort of 'rule' that all songs individually need to be autonomous and great while still contributing to the flow of awesomeness which is the album in its entirety.

and mellow? i disagree thoroughly. the subject matter and the outrageous-yet-not-flippant dynamics make it just as intense as ever, if not more.

it makes me very happy to see them just doing what they want to do, and not regurgitating the past and choking on their attempts to relive it. if all musicians behaved like tool, pretense and expectations regarding artists and their output would be obsolete.

Maynard started out as a comedian, but he ended up going towarRAB music anyway. He said so in an interview.

You ignored the rest of what I said about their metaphors being uncreative or simple. They try too hard to seem intelligent.

...Comedy is lighthearted, even black comedy. The point of comedy is to make light of a situation or event, and yeah, critique can be funny.

Tool is progressive metal. I haven't heard anyone disagree on this.

Their songs are usually 6 minutes long, and it's not uncommon for them to be longer. Stinkfist is pretty much a couple chorRAB, H does have more than a few basic chorRAB, but then it gets ****ing plastered with them, Hooker With a Penis is monotonous (but hilarious), a lot of Aenima is like that. Lateralus is a bit better, but parts of it still suffers from up down up down monotony. 10,000 Days is so, SO ****ing boring. It's loaded with filler, and the songs that aren't meant to be filler, (mainly Wings for Marie stuff) is just really, really long with microscopic changes, which they pass off as complexity.

i rather like Tool, but i don't know why. i don't listen to any other kind of metal at all. most of the stuff i like is dreamy and electronic. but Tool just has this certain appeal that i can't stay away from. very nice music indeed.

I think this can be said for most of their albums, but especially 10,000 Days and Lateralus. I love that most of their songs have a plethora of different riRAB and fills in them, so like you said every time you listen to it you can fall in love with something else.

I don't think Maynard is a 'tool,' I think he is just very, very firm in his beliefs and in the ways he expresses them. I think he would be a very intimidating person to meet, I would be terrified of him...

And yeah, totally agreed that Tool have a tribal aspect of them, which is apparent in almost all of their work.

Yeah he's been spending A LOT of time with his wine-making/ vineyarRAB at the moment and less time with his music which is pretty disappointing. He also named the first batch of his wine after his mother who passed away. You can read all about his current pursuits and thoughts about things in his blog which is at Puscifer's MySpace Blog | Puscifer

A pretty interesting read for anyone who is an MJK fan.

I'm liking some of the Peach covers I'm listening to right now on youtube. But I can't decide if I like the Tool covers better than the originals.

One thing I am decided on is that Justin Chancellor is a BA on the bass...
