The Official Tool Thread

This is what I wound up doing when I first got into Tool, started with 10K Days and worked backwarRAB. I think I'm almost glad I did it that way, because each step I took backwarRAB kind of reinforced the albums ahead of it. It took me about a month to feel like I had fully clicked with Lateralus, but once I did made me appreciate 10K Days even more (which I had already clicked with) because of the differences between it and Lateralus. Hope that makes sense:hphones:

I wish the question would have been: Which live Tool song did you like best while on psychedelic drugs? In which I would have answered, while my acid began treating me like pellets fired from a shotgun shell, Parabola, Lateralus tour - Florida.

At the time, that was the only thing in existence. Sometimes, it still is.

Yes, Maynard own his very own wine company AND vineyard based in Arizona. check it out. he also has a bunch of interviews and videos about it on youtube.

I think that they are all some of the greatest musicians in rock and metal. Especially Carey. and Jones. and Chancellor. and maynard.
wait a sec... :)

The consensus is that Salival is worth it, so methinks I shall have to seek it out... anything worthwhile by Tool is a good thing indeed!

I agree. Chancellor does wonders with his guitars and effects. There have been moments where I was unsure that the sound I was hearing was even a bass. Pure brilliance, if you ask me. One of my favorite Tool tracks for the bass at the moment would have to be "Disposition". Typical, I know, but it always makes me think of transitional seasons. Sometimes, I think their more mellow songs like this move me more than any of their stuff.

I get your point now. Thank you for elaborating.

I'd love to hear some music that is focused on the bass - aside from Les Claypool. For some artists, even when the bass is the focal point, it gets drowned out by the other instruments. Like Mingus, for example. When I listen to his music, I feel like I have to try harder than I should to pick out the bass. So, is this because of the time period he was in or simply because of his choice of bass guitar (which was usually a double bass).

Firstly, people who say stuff like that are obviously durab and unknowledgeable. I'm not one to go about saying "YOU COULD NEVER WRITE SONGS AS DEEP AS TOOL." I agree with you on that; I don't like people who talk about Tool like they are untouchable GoRAB or some shit.

Secondly, since when was Maynard a hilarious black comedian? I know he was close to Bill Hicks and often incorporated black comedy into many of his viewpoints on the world but he was never a comedian. He studied art and wanted a career in art before participating in Tool; as far as I know he was always interested in profound and alternative ways of looking at the world. In fact, in most interviews/ press conferences/ etc I've seen with him he has always come across as a very, very serious person.

Plus anyway, comedy and specifically black comedy isn't lighthearted at all... it is often a very serious method of critiquing the world.

Thirdly, I agree with you in a way that Tool haven't done much for 'metal' and this is because I don't really place Tool in metal bucket at all. I see them more as art rock/progressive.

Fourthly, I definitely don't believe Tool are monotonous. They are anything but. Both emotionally and technically their music is very complex and layered. Can you give me any examples of where they use boring up-down-up-down three chord riRAB? Because as far as I'm aware their technicality is way more advanced than that.

Yeah, you should probably get on reading those posts. I'm sure most of us are aware that those are separate banRAB. I'm, in fact, a little peeved that they are in the same thread because APC will never amount up to Tool, and honestly, I think Maynard is a little bitter about that.

^ It's definitely worth having if you're a Tool fan. But seeing as it's just a live CD/ DVD it doesn't really compare with their actual albums. But check it out scottsy I think you would enjoy it!

If its from youtube, copy the erabed link and add [Y.OUTUBE][/YOUTUBE] around it. Without the period there, obviously.

As for me, I kinda hope they don't make any more music. 10000 Days was great and all, but they lost their edge. Opiate to Undertow to Aenima to Lateralus....all totally different from each other yet completely awesome. 10000 Days just sounded like Lateralus part 2 to me...unless they completely shift, I think they are done. I think Maynard knows it, too.
