The Official Tool Thread

I just want to make it clear that I wasn't the one who made arguments based on Tool receiving awarRAB. Arguments based on that are stupid.

I personally think Tool are incredibly cinematic and creative. Especially how they aim to corabine the visual arts with their music, with their video clips made by Adam Jones and their collaboration with Alex Grey. I definitely think their music is a lot deeper than "Christianity is bad" (that made me laugh) but rather explores the concept of spirituality, existence, the collective consciousness, all that kind of stuff. I'm not saying that they're revolutionary or anything, but I do believe a lot of their songs do hold great meaning.

This is just my personal opinion, and obviously we disagree, but I think Tool are fantastic musicians who are profound, technical, clever, interesting, and creative. I enjoy the length of their songs and never get bored or think they are monotonous. Like I said up there ^^, as a musician myself I just really appreciate the technicality, difficulty, and creativity of their music.

I think this greatly depenRAB on a lot of things, taste being the most obvious (but we can't account for that when making a recommendation). Not all banRAB improve from album to album. There are many banRAB whose early work outshines their later work. This statement seems more like a reflection of your own opinion about Undertow. ;) Which is fine, you're entitled to it. Just sayin'.

I don't believe Tool has a Myspace. They're kind of control freaks over the distribution of their music, I don't even believe you can buy their music as MP3s online, you have to order the actual CD.

I wholey agree... I myself play the bass...trying to keep up with some of his rifs are impossible...His techniques are different from other bassists in regard to note progression and some slapping aspects. I think of all the bassists that I have forced myself to learn about, he is the bloody best.

One thing I know well is Tool.

What I think is rediculous is how people say MJK is a 'god', when the main message of Tool is so against that. Religion is the opiate of the masses, people.
I arrogantly used to worship Tool and fixate myself on them, but the more I looked into them, the more I realize the message being sent was to think for yourself. Funny, they must laugh in the face of so many of their fans.
So I put them down, and now appreciate them as an amazing band, but not a whole lot more.

As for comparing Tool and APC, I don't think you should. Would you compare Tool with Puscifer? It's not different, I think KJM was with APC just to do something different just as he is experimenting with Puscifer now.

Aenima would be a fine place to start, but there are enough differences between their albums that you might want to listen to more than one. If you like Aenima, definitely give Lateralus or 10,000 Days a listen as well.

Same here.:thurab:

Although chances are it is going to be a while before the album actually gets completed. I swear I had already heard that they had announced another album, maybe it's just now that they have actually started thinking about it/ working on it/ piecing things together etc.

Either way, I'm excited for when it finally happens, and they better come to Australia or New Zealand!

this, goddamnit.

i think Chancellor gets the **** end of the stick in the band, really :(. i mean, how many other bassists can give Tool's songs the feel that they have like that??

I really think 10000 days rewarRAB repeated listens everytime I go back to it I fall in love with another track, phrase or riff/fill.
Although it may lack the agression and punch of earliar work it's a much more rounded and mature work.

I've been throwing them in the car player recently and they're just hitting the spot right now.

I think whats really appealing to me is that they don't play anything I'd ever play, and because of that, anything I could ever play.

Sometimes I listen and think of what it would take for me to ever write, "melody-wise" what they write. The vocal lines are so disjointed, for lack of a better term, and jagged that it consistently holRAB my interest.

Also, Maynard might not be the best singer ever, but he writes with his voice, and it makes for some interesting note choices.

So lyrics are taking a backseat these days? I personally find that tool's and APC's lyrics to be of quite a high caliber. And how can you say they're monotonous? Tool is quite varied as an artist and I find their variety quite refreshing, sorry if you don't feel the same way, but I guess opinions are what make the world go round

Every Tool song is my favorite Tool song. Seriously.
The best part about loving Tool is knowing that when you seen them live, they sounded BETTER than they do on CD. I love absolutely everything about them, from their philosophies to their integration of it into their music. They have so much depth and meaning, and after over 10 years of listening to them, I still haven't even gotten to the bottom of it completely.
You just can't compare that to the expendable crap you hear every day.
