The Official David Bowie Thread

My mom had Ziggy Stardust, and I started listening to it. Then I went out and bought the best of David Bowie because I like him, but not enough to go out and buy one of the many other cRAB. Best of is good enough for me.

I think it's rated pretty fairly considering it pretty much invented the sound of the 80s. But with you not really being much of a fan of post punk or synth pop I don't really think you can appreciate it's impact fully.

I know this post is hella old, but I haven't got much else to do, so what the hell.

John I'm Only Dancing and This Is Not America are the only genuine stand-alone singles the man released, both of which are pretty good songs. There are several more singles from soundtrack albums to speak of, like the original (pre-Let's Dance) mix of Cat People from the film of the same name, Underground from Labyrinth (along with a bunch of others), Absolute Beginners and Real Cool World. As far as soundtracks with Bowie involved go, get the Absolute Beginners one, as besides some very good Bowie songs, there are some great nurabers from Sade, the Style Council, Ray Davies and so on.

It's well worth getting his unreleased album of re-recordings of his 60s material, Toy, as well, as some of those recordings are easily among the best he's done. As far as bootlegs go, the Outside Outtakes are basically some of the outright weirdest songs the man ever recorded, and are well worth hunting down as well.

I think one could play piano and guitar up to Grade 8 standard without necessarily having any particular distinguishing talent. LoaRAB of kiRAB get there just by being made to practise every week from eight years old to fifteen. There's a fair distance between competence and that little bit extra.

Ziggy Stardust is my favorite Bowie album period, probably Low after that, then Aladdin Sane and then Hunky Dory.

I like the music hall style of Hunky, I know that a lot of people hate it when rock musicians play around with that style of music (like say, Paul McCartney) but I think it's great, Bowie has always been kinda vaudville anyway and to me it's one of his defining albums, I disagree with it being all filler, I think most of the tracks are great.

I strongly disagree that Bowie is weak as an album artist, but he does know how to pick his singles, in fact he has one of the best run of singles of any artist.

me likey bowie immensly. especially the album 'hunky dory' really really swell music. anyone agree/disagree? and for that matter, to fellow lovers of hunky dory, anything else you recommend by david bowie?

:thurab:

The tour he did a few years ago with Nine Inch Nails was fantastic. Between sets, Bowie and NIN would do a few of each others songs together. Hearing Bowie sing Hurt and Reptile were worth the admission price by themselves!!!

At the end of the 90's.

David Bowie – Vocals, Guitar
Reeves Gabrels – Lead Guitar
Tony Sales – Bass Guitar
Hunt Sales – Drums

Some critics say they had an influence on the Grunge scene!!!
