The Official David Bowie Thread

I'm not much into his music myself, probably the only two songs I ever listen to are "Putting Out The Fire With Gasoline/Cat People" and "This Is Not America".

Young Americans is fantastic.

If any of Bowies 70s work is worthy of trash talk, then surely it's Diamond Dogs, the only good song on that was Rebel Rebel, really.

in all the interviews i've seen it come up Bowie admits to being a terrible guitar player, but that could just be modesty. Anyhow his songwriting talent is beyond doubt - but I was always under the impression that some of his most famous albums were almost collaborative efforts with his producers and session men - Visconti, Eno, Ronson, the Gardiner brothers...?

loz, dude, just what IS your issue? Like, seriously?

Changes and Life On Mars are fantastic songs. But on the basis of what I know of his early work (with the one exception of The Man Who Sold The World [album]), Bowie is all about the singles/big hitters. The album tracks on Hunky Dory are absolute crud. It's reminiscent of the same crappy music hall tripe that he began his career with.

Aside from that, your claim that I "dislike things just because they're good" is not only arrogant, but completely ignorant of who I am and my tastes in music. Hell, you know WHY I am bothering to listen to Bowie's discography? Because I grown up listening to and loving David Bowie, on the basis of his greatest hits CRAB. Liking David Bowie as much as I did/do, I am curious to have a fuller picture of his work. Up to now I am not impressed.

Anyone agree with me that Diamond Dogs is seriously underrated? I can't stop listening.

There's a 4 disc bootleg version of the BBC discs that contains double the amount of songs included on the official BBC version.

I like Young Americans, must have been a head**** when it came out though, what with going from glam rock to soul like that. It has Fame, which is an instant winner straight there, and i like the Beatles cover.

Station To Station is really brilliant, one of his best opening songs on there.

I love Bowie... Mainly his early stuff like Hunky Dory (Wakeman is on it ;)), Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, I know his later Eno era stuff is a lot more popular with the hipster crowd, but whatever.

Heroes is awesome, you can't quite beat a trio of pure talent like Bowie, Eno and Fripp, I wish they would all do another album together, that would be sweeeeeeet.

Diamond Dogs is great. I wouldn't say it's in my top five Bowie albums but definitely nuraber 7 or 8.

I'm partial to the stuff he did in the late 70s with Eno. Low and "Heroes" being my favorites.

Station to Station is creeping up on Ziggy for my favourite, I think Ziggy will always be top though for its nostalgic value. Low 3rd? After that there could be about 5 competitors...
