The Mentalist (Merged)

A lot of people may have missed it, and there was a large number of refuseniks = No House no Mentalist!

Well worth it....though personally, I prefer the similar toned show Lie to Me. Of which S2 starts in Sky 1 in a few weeks.....

It is pretty good for what it is - which is yet another US crime drama with a "quirky" detective. Good example of the genre though, well acted, funny, slick dialog, good pace.

For the hook - imagine "Derren Brown Investigates". Ex-TV psychic atoning for his previous life as a shyster helping to solve crime using his old skill set; cold-reading, memory tricks, hypnosis, misdirection, suggestion, etc.

I'm so sorry Raven :o. I didn't know whether to spoiler it or not, seeing as the episode had already been shown.

Although, have to say, I kind of already knew about the whole Boscoe and team 'thing', because the stupid trails on Five, showed those particualr scenes, so it was kind of ruined for me already, if that helps.

I'm helping with the Ch5 ratings!

Loved Jane in the prison in Friday's episode, not sure if that would have worked in a real prison though.

Love the other characters too especially Lisbon. And i'm glad Van pelt and Rigsby have got together

I'm also getting better at guessing the killer, i was really rubbish with the first series but i've guessed correctly so far this series!

This series really hasn't picked up for me. It's unique selling point just isn't being realised ... I thought he was meant to be a master manipulator and player of mental games. Apart from being a bit more perceptive than the cops around him he's not really showing any of the skills I'd attribute to a mentalist.

For instance, in last night's episode he gathered around a search party that had been looking for a missing girl, asked them to put both arms in the air, and then said "one of you is the abductor, lower your right arm now" ... of course no one lowers their arms, but that didn't bother me. I assumed that he was actually playing some kind of mind game and that the cleverness of this piece of showmanship would be revealed later ... I was wrong. It was just a poor joke.

The killer is generally too easy to guess as well. The moment I saw the chap with the glasses last night I knew he was going to be revealed as the killer ... plus, once again, absolutely no motive for the murderer is given whatsoever.

This is no better or worse than lots of other American cop shows ... because really there is nothing to distinguish it from other cop shows. I expected that a series about a "mental manipulator" might work on a few more levels but this is really quite black and white, simplistic storytelling. A shame, as the concept itself is a really intriguing one.

This is going to bug me unless I find out the name of the British actor who looks very similar to him.[/QUOTE]

Are you thinking of Christopher Villiers

No problem mate, my fault for thinking I could take a peek in without catching anything of importance.

The wife was complaining about the 5 adverts and warning me to "be-deep" thru as she also caught the spoiler earlier in the week

Its a problem when you record all these shows as opposed to watching live, but hey our choice and when we watched it at lunch today we both sat pretending we didn't know what was about to happen :D

Great episode for so early in the season and with Minelli gone (or is he?) who are we gonna suspect now!!!

Be-deep : technical term applicable to Tivo users ;)

Yeah I'm getting better at guessing the killer too! I think we're starting to become wee mentalists ourselves :p

And sorry if this is a really stupid question but does recording a show still contribute to its ratings? Ashes To Ashes is on at the same time as The Mentalist and if recording the show didn't contribute to the ratings then I will be watching The Mentalist.

Great episode. I really, really enjoy watching The Mentalist. Very sad this week though.

I was disappointed to see the end of Gregory Itzin's character more than I was by Bosco's death. Although he will always be President Logan, I always liked seeing his name on the credits because he livens up any scene he's in. His answer to the question at the press conference was great.

Very good first episode. I loved the piss take on Monk (the guy who was qualifying the murder scene who Patrick told wasn't the Red murderer).

A little similar to CSI in production but nice nonetheless, and agree good that Patrick's backstory was explained in episode 1.

I felt the jump from the red herrings (the brothers) to the culprit was a little brisque and predictable but it's a first episode and a lot to of background stuff to fit in too to get us hooked.

The actor paying Patrick does look a lot like that actor who was Sam in Home and Away and was in The bill (but not him)
