The legend of Dunk Mask - Basquash! Talkback (Spoilers)

So, I just finished watching the second episode. And, this show feels like a keeper. We learn why Coco is in a wheelchair (although the OP kinda gave it away). I like the whole "delivery service to pay off debts" angle, although I believe that wil go bye-bye in favor of forming a BFB team. Can't wait until Episode 3 and see how Dan deals with the attacker.

I'm going with FUNimation because that's the safest bet if I want a good dub with uncut stuff. Though knowing Viz and their affinity for shows that they can market the hell out of, they could go for this too.

(BTW, I wonder if Bosch can pull off a hardcore Renton's voice to play Dan?)

Anyway, episode 2:

I need to stop fangasming over this show and review it like a normal person but I haven't had this much fan with a show since....Gurren Lagann...I think?

Anyway, this was, what I thought was going to be a much slower episode compared to last week until that last five minutes of Dan vs. Sela (and I'm assuming Iceman is the one who crashed the party at the end) but I'm surprised at the realism of this show. And that's saying something about a show revolving around giant, car-designed CGI mecha who play streetball. There's actually repercussions to running wild through a stadium and destroying things. Who knew? And actually working to pay off your debt? My god, this is just insanity!

Also, Spanky just became my favorite character. Speaking of which, where do those guys get those talking, apparently also shape-shifting, animals anyway? I want one!

Hmm....using sandals to run with and a guy from the moon having company issues....Well, I have no idea where this could possibly be going

So, unlike what I originally thought, it seems that Miyuki and Sela not only know each other but are conspiring together too for something. I just hope that something isn't something that would screw Dan over later.

Ouch....Coco....that scene was painful.

Am I missing anything? Oh, yeah, this show is awesome (Between this, Eden of the East and FMA:B, I'm having a hard time deciding which is the blockbuster of the season)

Im sure whatever Miyuki and Sela are planning is something cliche like "itl make him the greatest basketball player ever" or something. It probably wont be anything that hurt him.

dude, i just noticed the toes on the mecha, that's just crasy.

There is one way to describe the Bigfoots,a pimped out version of Megas XLR with toes (and wearing sandals apparently), anyway I'm totally seeing Gurren Lagann vibes from this, and so far I'm liking it

Well Iceman has a vendetta against Dan and that makes him just a tad bit crazy. Again, this show really takes a cliche character and spins them into something I wouldn't have expected. I was actually convinced that "Destroy" was Iceman's evil twin or something after the nice scene between him and Sela. But it seems their street ball is setting the example for the future of BFB and seems like we may be looking forward to some stadium 3-way matches in the future.

And man, if you thought Miyuki was fanservice...you haven't seen anything yet. Lunar bust, indeed. Episode 3 takes it all to a whole new level, which I have to admit is getting kind of annoying. I can deal with Miyuki, but Sela's consistent naked floating moments during the matches disrupt the flow. Hopefully she can contain herself in the future. And I'm not even going to comment on Haruka. >_

I think it's probably because it's doing it's job correctly instead of just being there

Seriously, why is Sela so hot?

Although I will say this

OVER-FREAKING-KILL!

With episode 3, I can see the Gurren references, especially with the princess. But, hey, we're going to have a team soon! Yay!

Overall, this is my favorite series of the Spring season so far. It's extremely well-animated, the characterizations are good, and the fanservice doesn't distract from the main plot like in Queen's Blade. Although, Lunar bust is like taking Soulcalibur IV and mating it with Dead Or Alive.

Also, I'm typing this while watching the NBA playoRAB.

I remeraber reading somewhere that when they tested the original version of Basquash! out it borabed with the general Japanese audience.

I guess in order to make it more palatable to the Japanese they did two things: 1. Up the awesomeness factor (which also helps it internationally because everybody loves awesomeness), and 2. pile on the fanservice (which only helps it in Japan).

Actually, let me explain a bit more. If I remeraber correctly from what was mentioned over at CATSUKA, Thomas Romain (Oban Star Racer's Director/Character Designer, Code: Lyoko's co-creator) originally submitted the idea to Satelight some point after he started working there. This was after some time after the French crew moved from Hal Film Animation over to Satelight. Apparently though, it was decided that the concept wasn't marketable enough in it's original form, but Shoji Kawamori liked the idea enough to get it started and rework the idea.

As far as I am aware, they never really had a test version of the original concept outside of concept form. I could be wrong, but I didn't see any mention of such.

EDIT: I should also make note that the background art for the show is done generally by the French team. Some of the Key Animation (or rather, Layout Animation and what not) is also being provided by them. Thomas Romain is in charge of the Art Director and Mechanical Concept Design, with Stanislas Brunet assisting with the Art Design and is in charge with the Mecha(nical) Designs.

I like older women in anime sometimes . . . (and yes, I do find Sela hot, it's hard not to).

Thanks for clarifying, ChibiGoku. It's very fascinating info there. I keep forgetting a significant part of Satelight is French now, but it's kinda cool that the gorgeous backgrounRAB are being drawn by them. I guess I was mistaken on how the idea was rejected but then reworked so it would perform better to the target audience.

So I guess that if the show was brought over to the U.S., would it end up on Disney XD since the show is made from the director of Oban Star Racers?

^^Yeeaaaah, I don't think so...

I was thinking that myself but then I thought of all they would have to cut out and that wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable.

You're right. After Disney's craptacular Digimon: Savers dub, I would love a company that would give the show some respect but hey, ya never know. In these troubling times, anyone can pick up an anime, edit it to the least common denominator, and just throw out there for the kiRAB to see if they'll watch it or not.

So I guess that my pick of Funimation picking the show up from a few comments ago will remain to be true? No prob with that.

I can see FUNimation with Basquash!, and when I watch this show I can already picture FUNimation voices with these characters, and I still can't get out of amazement over the fluid animation it has, Thomas Romain made the right choice to give this to Satelight
