バスカッシュ!

Synopsis: On the planet Earthdash, citizens of Rollingtown gaze toward the sky at the brilliant lights of the technologically advanced lunar city, cleverly called Mooneyes. In the city there lives a young teenage boy named Dan JD, who causes havoc under the vigilante identity of Dunk Mask with his two cohorts, Ganz and Bel, to pay their way through life. Dan harbors hatred toward the city's giant mechs, called Bigfoots, that perform various tasks, most notably serving as the vehicles for both the police department and the Bigfoot Basketball (BFB) sports league. Dan is a skilled basketball player and has fond memories of playing with his sister before she had an unfortunate accident that left her in a wheelchair. Now Dan absolutely loathes the boring, blundering mess the BFB tries to pass off as professional basketball. Will the return of a childhood friend be able to motivate Dan toward greatness, or is he destined to live the rest of his days as a delinquent?

This was my most anticipated release for spring season and episode 1 did not disappoint. The animation is beautiful and very fluid. The quirky characters and style of jokes (and fanservice) are very reminiscent of Gurren Lagann. It's a fast pace, high energy, over-the-top show with a unique setting. The way the first episode ended has me excited for potential mech action and possible tournament style competitions in upcoming episodes. This show could easily become one of the best of the season and promises to put a fun twist on basketball and mechs in general.

That is an awesome title for this thread. Couldn't have done better myself.

So yeah, in case you couldn't figure it out from the Spring 09 anticipation thread, this has been my nuraber one show to see. Mostly because of how different it looked compared to the other shows. I mean, Giant mecha, playing basketball to j-rap? Basketball! And its sponsored by Nike (Which, by the way, this is the most shameless advertising plug since "PIZZA HUT SUPPORTS THE REBELLION")

Anyway, judging by episode 1, this series is not going to disappoint me at all. I like Dan a lot. Sure, he's a typical shounen stereotype...but he's just so good at it, you can't help but smile as he tears through whatever he does. Oh and Miyuki, who I like to call "Ms. Fanservice of 2009" is so cool. I wasn't expecting the childhood frienRAB angle though. I thought that it was going to be like "Air Gear" with Simca just dragging Ikki into the game. And it looks like Coco will be the series' deadpan snarker so I can expect a lot of funny from her.

But man, this show is pretty. I mean, really pretty. The Bigfoot mecha are just spectacular looking (even if it suffers from conspicuous CGI Syndrome) and the city just looks so huge, it reminRAB me of the one from Tekkonkinkreet.

And how about that ED? I disagree with omni from Random Curiosity. Though, I admit that the visuals are not much to look at, the song is just fun to listen to. Especially with all the gratuitous english. Grammatically correct, no less!

I'm so glad I like quirky shows like this or else I would have missed out on a real winner. If you're still reading this, clearly you aren't watching Basquatch so check it out.

Agreed, on both points. I really think you put it in a good way, Dan is likable because he's so good at being the shounen lead. He's loud and energetic, yet you find yourself rooting for him rather than getting annoyed. Furthermore, you know the kid has a lot of heart and love for the game of basketball, and for his sister. It makes me wonder what exactly he'll be capable of on the court. He had some pretty slick moves on his feet, and even on the mech. But obviously in the next episode, the ante has been upped quite a bit. And I think the ED is pretty damn catchy, the visuals aren't the best but I'm always a sucker for cool dribbling, so I think it fits well overall. Curious to see what the opening will be like, though.

I've gotta say my favorite part of episode 1 was definitely the ending, because I honestly expected Dan to break out of jail or get out on parole or something. The fact that he actually spent a whole year in jail was not only a great setup to the series and the progression of his legend as Dunk Mask, but it was a big LOL moment. At least for me, anyway. XD

The fanservice parts really grate on my nerves. It's not even just the childhood friend either, it's that one girl that was watching the hero's court intervention and was smitten and was later shown having spilled drinks all over herself and sitting in a rather compromising position...ugh, how distasteful. Still, I have to agree with the praise for the positive aspects of the show. This one deserves to be licensed by somebody. There's signs of real heart and spirit here, and as crazy as the premise is they seem to make it work out all right. My negative first impression in the spring season thread was rightfully corrected. It just neeRAB to mostly stick to the giant robot fanservice.

No, Queen's Blade is distasteful. That was like the best scene in the whole episode

(Though focusing the camera on that same shot of Miyuki's chest for about three minutes was a little much)

I thought Queen's Blade was rather hilarious myself, in a 'OMG, is this on screen?' trainwreck sort of way.

On the actual series being discussed, I have to admit I was rather surprised how much I liked it. I was completely ready to write it off as a shonen sports anime 'with a twist'. The production values are just phenomenal. I do hope they tone the Miyuki fanservice down a bit.

The show's pretty good episode 1 aside. I hope to see more advancement with the characters and the continued use of the impressive 2-D with CGI animation. The show looks awesome, feels awesome, and if it's licensed by Nike, you know it has to be great.

I wonder if Nike would consider trying to bring the show to the U.S. with Funi's help?

Okay, I really need to comment on the OP.

It's...good and all but that's it...it's good. It's generic, it's j-popish. I was expecting something along the lines of Samurai Champloo since that's what I heard in all the promo commercials. But, then again, if I was to judge a whole series based on the theme song alone, I wouldn't exactly be a good fan would I. Anyway, it's good and it's something I would listen to each week but its somewhat generic (and kind of depressing to be honest)

EDIT: My god, it looks like its a completely different series to be honest.

Saw the first episode and I'm very interested to see what happens in the show. It is hard to judge something like this so quick, but the art is great and the premise sounRAB interesting enough.

Admittedly I felt much the same at first, but upon re-watching the episode a couple times I find it not so irritating. That's because it's not made out to be the type of fanservice with a sex appeal so much as it is the type of fanservice made for the comedy, and it works most of the time...at least for Miyuki, I laughed at most of the jokes. As for the other girl (I believe her name is Sela), that scene was short and didn't particularly bother me...it's not like she was that scantily dressed for the spilled drinks to imply much. But I get your point. Honestly it reminRAB me all too much of Gurren Lagann and Yoko, which also started out very fanservice-y but managed to cut back in later episodes. I figure this will be the same as they focus less on jokes and more on the basketball games or the plot.

Has the opening aired already? Or did you just hear the song? Also, link?

Thanks, link added to the opening post.

Well I am in agreement with you about the opening, it doesn't entirely match the feel of the show. The first few seconRAB are awesome, but I could do without the piano and the lyrics. It's a neat opening visually, however. It gives me a lot of hope that this show will have more depth than simply "giant robots playing basketball."

Saw the first episode a while ago. And, so far, Basquash! may be my favorite show of the new season. ANN's editors have seemed to like the first ep, so I gave it a shot. The animation has to be the best I have seen, in like, ever. The plot may seem to be the shonen playbook, and the "long-lost childhood friend" seems to jiggle too much (have the Japanese learned self-control?). But, the concept is just too bizzare and it was really enjoyable. Can't wait to see the rest of the series and see more of Dan's reaction to the BFB world...ONE YEAR LATER.

Also, who thinks the guy who blocked Dan during the game will end up being a rival/big bad later on?

I can definitely see the rival angle (Bishounen who's better than the main character in a sports anime? Oh yeah, perfect rival marerial) but judging from the OP song, it looks like he'll be more of a teammate/rival than a bad guy/rival.

I imagine they will start out as rivals, especially once Dan finRAB out that he's the one responsible for screwing up the dunk. However, they both seem to be passionate about the sport I imagine they'll end up on the same team eventually (as the OP implies). So that leaves the question who will the ultimate antagonist be? Another team? Or perhaps something to do with Mooneyes.

Okay, the circumstances surrounding this particular scene are absolutely terrible and not cute at all...

So you can imagine how conflicted I feel when I ask...

Man, did they draw Miyuki uber-cute in that scene or what?

wow, im like watching this and one of the first things you see is people watching giant robots playing basketball on tv, im like "what the hell is going is on!??",and then this kiRAB being chased by giant walking robot police cars (they just look like police cars on legs)? and he just breaks all the tvs and ruins everyones game, what a jerk move man!, im like "this is just crasy man", lol.

anyway, in got over the weird begining, this was pretty cool, love the main character, the premise, the soundtrack playing when the kid was playing basketball, the gorgeous bouncy childhood friend (Ecchi, sweet!), and the mecha, this show is right ip my alley. Il keep watching.

why are the mecha called Big Foots?, and that crowd watching that basketball game were the biggest sheep ever man.
