The Explain Why You Like This Album ('cause i don't understand) Thread

Can - Ege Bamyasi

I'm sure there are a ton of reasons why I should like this album, I just can't figure out what they are! Plus, I find the long tracks Pinch and Soup particularly difficult.

I would agree that proto post punk is pretty much the best way to describe it. Their sound really didn't have much in common with other punk music from that time.

Oh man, Starless and Bible Black is what you started with? It took me a really long time to get into that album, and I really love King Crimson. Here is how exposure to the King should go:

Red
In the Court of the Crimson King

In that order. Then after that you will have a good idea if you will like them enough to further explore them.

Calling someone's viewpoint warped is certainly an ineffective way to converse with them.

Whether or not Tom Araya writes the lyrics is irrelevant. How I feel goes for any of the merabers of the band. They agree to perform the music with its subject matter as a band and who writes what is irrelevant. No one has answered my question about whether or not Slayer has always been open about the fact that their subject matter is just for effect. If they have always been open about it then I have no problem with it. But if they spent years of their career trying to seem metal by having this subject matter and not letting on that they, in fact, deeply disagree with it, that is different (to me). And I emphasize "to me" because many of you seem to think that it can be proved wrong that it matters if they sing about being followers of satan when they are Catholics (or Tom Araya is, I don't know about the others but I know they're not satanists) when, in fact, it is up to me and only me if i decide to care about this. I'm not sure why so many of you are trying so hard to convince me that it is not important if, to me, it is.

As far as your comment about how "lot's of metal banRAB don't practice what they sing" i suggest you refer to my earlier post where I mentioned this, my feelings about it, and why i think Slayer is different.

As far as your last paragraph... i am not trying to suggest that. I am simply making a statement about how I feel about the band Slayer and that is it.

Also, I guess I must reiterate AGAIN that my main problem with slayer has nothing to do with their subject matter. I love their instrumentals. I just don't like Tom Araya's vocal style. i don't like the way he sings. It bothers me. Or are you going to try to convince me that THAT shouldn't bother me either?

The difference between the the clash and the stooges is the stooges tried something different. The Clash rode a wagonload of hype when they existed, hype they didn't deserve. The clash were a pseudo-revolutionary hard rock band trying to sound punkish.

.....the stooges were an inebriated garage band trying to sound like the who, james brown, and maybe little richard. The Doors comparison is probably meant to provoke people, so I won't bite.

I see vu and nico as consisting of a bunch of really interesting techniques and ideas, but not much beyond that. I don't mind it, but I can understand people dismissing it as pretentious garbage. I preffered the self-titled and white light a lot more----they seemed less under the mentorship of artsy fartsy people with money to burn.

I've never got the idea that Bjork is unaccessible. There's a few moments like Medulla and Volta but even then it's not Cpt Beefheart territory or anything. Post is just an aural delight.

hey now, why is this getting all personal haha :p: you asked what albums everyone seems to love but you just don't 'get'.

any music site i've ever been on has praised The Smiths to no end, with the exception of a single track nothing of what i've heard by them has done anything for me. same with Bobby D and Cohen. there's just something about them the doesn't do it for me.

there's no hate or animosity, just full on meh-ness.

Oooh right, sorry misunderstood it. I like crooked rain the more I listen to it, which is a good sign. :D

Why's Slanted and Enchanted better, different sound? Or just a stronger song by song album?

17 years ago, when I first heard it, I loved it, but that was also just before the whole rap-metal onslaught that made this album painful to listen to. It sounRAB dated now, but it was very fresh and original before MTV got it's grimy little paws all over it.

Yeah, The Ramones were basically the Bay City Rollers with a faster tempo and distorted guitars.

And without the charming good looks.
