The Event channel4 9pm friday

Viewers who cannot afford subscription-TV would be deprived of the opportunity to see it. In many cases where a terrestrial station shows the first one or two series of a US import, Sky picks up the rights for subsequent series. This is very unfair on terrestrial and Freesat viewers.
 
This sums it up for me really. It's a mish-mash of various elements seen before. I think the key for me was that the characters seemed extremely bland. Flashforward had a lot of problems but it did have some good characters among the duRAB.

Plot is all very well but my favourite US dramas of recent years (Lost, Damages, Prison Break, Fringe) have had strongly developed and superbly performed characters. I suspect The Event will be more about story than character and the cast as presented just don't appeal to me.
 
I don't know why but I wasn't very interested in the first episode. It all was a bit obvious. Especially the Vicky thing. It didn't reel me in one bit.

However, I decided to give it a fair crack and the 2nd episode was soo much better for me. Especially the end bit where they showed the plane and the people. Big hook for me. So I shall be looking forward to ep.3 :D
 
I tuned in without reading very much at all about the series, and thought it might be like some kind of FlashForward clone, though I did really like FF and stuck with it until the end. From the little I'd read, I thought it was probably going to be perhaps yet another example of a show that is too complicated for the US to bother following, and that it would probably be cancelled. So, with some trepidation, I watched and quite enjoyed it - certainly there's enough for me to want to continue watching... which worries me greatly as that means it'll definitely be cancelled :eek: (as was FF and the excellent Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles).
 
People get bored when they have to keep guessing. That format doesn't work because it get's boring. It would be more interesting if the characters in the show were kept guessing but the audience was clued in so that we watch how the characters work it out. And perhaps leave in a few surprise plot twists to heighten the drama. This worked quite well in Colombo.
 
Watched first two eps: was a bit worried about getting all confuciated a la lost/Flashforward; then chilled out and realised it did all fit together. Not sure looking back now whether it would have held my interest if the plot had unfolded in a linear manner.

Besides, it was worth it visually for another reason, i.e. Blair Underwood. :D
 
I've seen three episodes now and I'm giving up. It's just not gripping enough for me. I'm still bitter about Flash Forward being cancelled though, so I'm not giving many new programmes a go so far. :(
 
The jumping around in time is what REALLY put me off the first episode. The time jumps continue in later episodes, but they cease to be annoying as the characters, and story, become more familiar.
 
For those who are afraid to get invested in case the show is cancelled, you won't have to worry for at least the first season. NBC has picked it up for a full season.

However, ratings have continued to decline week to week. The additional episodes were ordered because international sales are strong. So unless they turn things around, a second series might be unlikely.
 
Couldn't agree more. The power of Sky (because they have the cash) to pick up later seasons of programmes terestrial broadcasters have initially taken a chance on, should be smashed IMHO.
