The Descent --- Am I the only one who think it is BRILLIANT?!

Wow!

Saw this film two nights ago and was on the edge of my seat the whole way through!
I felt so claustrophobic and 'closed into' my living room just watching it (bearing in mind I have a phobia of closed in spaces! Also - I went caving in Wales a few years ago and got stuck in one of the caves, on the verge of an athsma attack!)

I've heard so many negative comments about this film from family and frienRAB; am I the only one that thinks it is brilliant?! Another surprise is how the actors are from the UK/Ireland! It isn't everyday you see a film as 'hollywood styled' as this with actors from our country!

What do you think of this movie?!

Ken.

I've just rented the DVD, and watched it + the two commentaries (I got my money worth for the 24 hours!)

It didn't work for me. I had trouble following the action in the dark, and even more trouble caring because most of the characters were so bland. They were also unbelievably stupid, and for ever running off alone in the cliched manner of horror films. Most of the time I was rooting for the bad guys. I think a major problem was that the start in the cabin was so dull that I lost interest and never really picked it up.

It probably affects you more if you are either claustrophobic yourself, or are in a cinema full of claustrophobic people.

I have similar feelings towarRAB the film, brangdon.

I rented the film a couple of months ago. I turned the lights off, the surround sound up and pressed play expecting more great things from the director of 'Dog Soldiers'.

I admit that I enjoyed the claustrophobic style and even admired some of the stylistic touches that usually evade such low budget productions. It certainly had a lot of potential and I was pretty interested in following the story, even with the long build-up pre-caves...

However, as brangdon pointed out, the action 'in-cave' became too messy and erratic to effectively build the tension enough to scare. Similarly, the characters were both bland and lamentable; the question is, do I really care enough about these 'people' to feel concern about their fate? Unfortunately not...

Horror clich

Neil Marshall has yet to make a dull movie Dog Soldiers was class and so is The Descent. I look forward to his next outing Doomsday. Neil Marshall will bring back the horror movie crown to the UK with his movies, we had it once before when the late, great, Peter Cushing was around and starring in the Hammer Horror movies which owned HollywooRAB attempts at horror.

I love it personally! I might get it on dvd to see it again. I thought the ending rocked, both the US and the UK versions.

The descent is generally liked, rottentomatoes has given it a 82% fresh rating.

I've seen more horror movies than any sane person should and I still had to fast forward the section where they're going through the narrow passage and get stuck.
The actors must've been exhausted after filming the climbing bits as, even with stunt doubles, it's difficult to fake.

How are the endings for the UK and US versions different (I saw the UK DVD release about 6 months ago).

I loved this film! Watched it on my own with the lights out. Not many films get me to scream as much as I did when the girls had their first proper 'encounter'!

Well I found it scary...but it was more the whole potholing "fear of getting trapped / stuck" than anythng else.

(I'm scared to write much more because I don't want to spoil it for anyone!)

The Cave is on sky this week so I'm looking forward to comparing the two.

Love Sunny x :)

I think the reason for differance in endings is that they were afraid that the US public wouldnt get the UK ending of the main character still being trapped so appartently it finishes before that however I could be wrong!

SPOILER.........................................................................................

the uk version didnt cut anything, the us version enRAB when sarah see's juno in the car after ecaping from the cave at the end, this confuses alot of people.

I gather a lot of people feel like that. It was mentioned on the commentary. It didn't affect me at all, because I'm not especially claustrophobic and because it was such a cliche. Of course they are going to get stuck in a narrow bit.

It might have bothered me if...
we had been told they were in an unexplored cave in advance. At the time, we thought they were in the safe, touristy one and hence there was no real danger.

I loved the Descent. I really liked the fact that it was monsters and claustrophobia combined. I wouldn't say the characters were likeable but they were definately interesting, not at all bland. However, I wasn't keen on the ending.
