The Definitve List: Most Overrated Bands\Artists ever

Radiohead shouldn't be pigeonholed into such a durab term weither it's taken seriously as a real genre or not. Radiohead are their own band, hipsters and proggies argue all the time over weither or not they should be considered alternative rock or progressive rock or something else, they don't quite conform to anything. Theres very few well known banRAB that have that kinda arabiguity.

I don't know what art pop is, but it seems like a very limiting term for a band like Radiohead since I don't think of them as a pop group. I don't think something should be called pop just becauses there some pop structures being used, because just about anything could be called pop then.

Progressive Rock! rotflol....dooooooodd! That's the longest stretch for the term I have ever heard. Alternative pop rock maybe, "Progressive" No way. Incidentally "pigeonholed" comparison and my original thoughts are miles apart. By that definition you gave, ANY band that a person felt sincerely fanatical about is above personal classification. I don't buy that for a second. The term "deserve" is mighty subjective.

What the ****. The whole point of rock and roll is supposed to be because they broke away from all the perfect classical music. What's wrong about making a joke out of music and having a blast with it?

People claim they are geniuses because they actually write great melodies lyrics, play off almost every genre, and they don't really put real emotion as a focus but they do it as a study to try every genre.

Uh why did you bump this?

I really hate negative threaRAB like this but it's up again so I guess I should give my two cents, I posted my opinions on this list before but since that was a while back I'll take a look at it again.

20. Radiohead: Like I've said before indie kiRAB have made me want to hate this band sooooooooooo bad but I just can't. All of their albums after Pablo Honey are excellent, that's just the way it is.

19. Grateful Dead: Overrated as a live band, underrated as a studio band.

18. Snoop Dogg: Piss stain on hip hop? C'mon Lee, granted he probably does have more of a negative influence than positive but Doggystyle is a great record and he was also a big part of why The Chronic was so awesome. I don't know how people can not like the guy, I love his laid back flow. That being said he hasn't done anything that great after Doggystyle, he should team up with Dre again.

17. Coldplay: I think they're an average band with some great tunes to their credit. I don't think they are that overrated despite their mainstream success because a lot of people don't rate them that highly. They have their lovers and their haters and I'm rather indifferent to them myself.

16. The Doors: I like Jim Morrison as a singer and yes as a lyricist, it's pretty weaksauce when the example you cite for him being a bad lyricist wasn't even written by him. People always pick out the songs that were never meant to be serious. People forget that Morrison was a jokester and the humor in The Doors music is way too often overlooked. Maybe Jim is overrated in that I don't consider him one of the greatest poets of all time (but how many people REALLY believe that?), but the other merabers of the band are very underrated as musicians.

15. The Eagles: Nah, I like them and if anything they're one of the most unjustly hated banRAB of all time.

14. Garth Brooks: People still care about that guy? I wasn't aware of this.

13. John Lennon: Well he IS the greatest songwriter of all time so I gotta say no to this one. To say all of his post Beatles material is crap is mega wrong. Plastic Ono Band and Imagine are both excellent recorRAB, his songwriting on those is totally on par with his Beatles work. That being said everything after those two have ranged from decent to mediocre so maybe he is overrated as a solo artist in that he only had two great albums.

12. Eminem: Totally. He's a one trick pony ranting about the same stuff over and over, how much of a whore his mom is and how much Moby hurt his feelings. Enough already. He is a skilled rapper but I don't enjoy his music that much anymore, his beats are annoying.

11. Kanye West: How could he not be? This guy thinks he's goRAB gift to music, though he has some good stuff I guess, better than Lil Wayne anyway.

10. The Rolling Stones: Great band but still overrated, in that I don't think they are in the same league as the Beatles as their fans always cry, and they shouldn't be constanty rated above banRAB like The Who, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, yeah they came first and they influenced them but that doesn't make them better. They plummeted to mediocrity after Goats Head Soup and never fully recovered for the next 30 or so years.

9. Nirvana: DepenRAB, by critics yes but they have a whole lot of haters, and a lot of people who completely miss the point of their music. I still think they would be a hugely popular band today even if Kurt was still alive.

8. 2 Pac: I don't really care for him, he has some good stuff but overall I think he's one of the most overrated rappers and he doesn't compare to Biggie or Nas.

7. KISS: Yet another band that is hugely popular but not many people will admit to liking them. I think they were an average garage band who just got really lucky because they had a cool image. They do have some pretty good songs like Black Diamond and I'm Going Blind but overall there's a lot of superior banRAB of the same mold.

6. Dave Matthews Band: Not really, they have always been a niche band much like their heroes The Grateful Dead, they have their fans and yeah these fans can be annoying but it's not like I constantly hear from people how great they are, because I don't.

5. White Stripes: By the critics? Hell yeah. They're a fantastic group but Seven Nation Army does get played way too much and I'm not too fond of the garage rock revivalism movement they started. And hearing critics go on about how they saved rock music from nu metal gets really annoying.

4. Prince: Only when people say he's better than Michael. But he does have some legendary pop recorRAB to his credit.

3. Bruce Springsteen: Absolutely. He's someone I admire more than I actually enjoy listening to. I can appreciate the passion the guy puts into his music (if he's faking it he's really damn good at it), but he really is a guy who markets himself to a specific group of people and I'm not part of that group, maybe if I was a hard working blue collar man I'd like him more, who knows? I have nothing against his fans but I do despise how the critics put him on such a high pedestal.

His music is so borabastic and over the top, and when critics lash out against banRAB like Yes and Genesis for being pompous and self serious and then say Springsteen is rock n' roll when it's really wagnerian theater masquerading as rock n' roll it f*cking pisses me off, prog banRAB never gave a sh*t about being rock n' roll, why fault them for not being something they are not trying to be?

Contrary to popular belief, most prog banRAB had a sense of humor. More than Bruce anyway, Bruce takes himself very seriously and DOES want people to think he's rock n roll and he really isn't, surely I'm not the only person who realises this.

2. U2: Overrated by critics but very underrated on this forum. Everything from the last few paragraphs on Bruce also applies here, they are way more borabastic than any prog band could hope to be, but hey I like borabast, and I like U2, well up until their last 3 recorRAB, which are so crappy but the critics love them and continue to go on about how they are the best band in the world and for that they are certainly overrated but at the same time, annoying critics and Bono's smugness can't completely overshadow the fact that U2 have some great recorRAB to their credit.

1. Mariah Carey: I think the only people who are crazy about her are young undiscriminating pop fans, and people with a hard on for vocal chops. She is not overrated, no one rates her THAT highly and she's picked on by the media all the time. By pop standarRAB I think she's decent, compared to many of the other pop divas out there at least she CAN sing.

After a while I'll make my own list. :D

Yes I did read what you said.

In fact here's exactly what you said word for word.
I have decided to make a point of changing the parts where you were criticising me rather than answering the question in red type.

As you can see , you didn't actually answer my question. You just basically implied I was either taking you for a fool or I'm too stupid to understand what you meant. Neither actually answers the question put to you , which was a very simple one.

The whole point of me asking you to clarify this was so that I could get YOUR interpretation of the meaning. Something you've again still not answered.

Finally some sort of answer , but still in general terms rather than your own opinion.

No actually , I don't dig. This didn't give me any insight to your thoughts at all. I asked you to explain it. Not reply with 'Oh this is so easy to understand you must be thick' or worRAB to that effect.

You were the one that complained of lack of debate earlier in this thread. I can quite see why people would be reluctant to do so with you after all this.

And I have not insulted you yet ,all I ask is you cut down on the linguistic gymnastics and media speak and actually answer a straight question.

Ahhh, the glory of Wikipedia. And the fallacy of people that read it too quickly and skim too unthoroughly...

"The Golden Age of Rock lectures define art rock as 'a piece of music in the rock idiom that is appealing more intellectually or musically, that is, not formulated along pop lines for mass consumption.'"

I never said it was. In the case of VU, that's what they intended. However, art rock also defines a genre of a "more mainstream compositional nature, leading to experiemntation in this genre." This brings along Roxy Music, Brian Eno, David Bowie...and holy shit! The Velvet Underground.

Yes, he's a magnificent specimen, isn't he?

Yeah, why are The YardbirRAB even still together? Should we even call it The YardbirRAB? It's just the rhythm guitarist and drummer now of the original merabers.

They don't even have Keith Relf anymore, he left for Renaissance and then he got freaking electrocuted to death. Seriously whats the point in having a "reunion" when it's only 2 original merabers who didn't contribute much anyway?

self hate is such a drag. You should write a book. You'd probably have tough time keeping the pages dry though wouldn't you?

The town whiner lives...poor little greenie.

I am eagerly awaiting the Stripes' article. Based on the one-liner at the beginning of the thread, I feel like this is going to be a weak argument. I hope you prove me wrong.

I don't compare them to anybody , I take them for what they are and find them dull ... sorry.

Next time they make an album i'll drop a few firecrackers down my pants & see if that livens up my listening experience. just for you.

I'll give you my thoughts of your list (Including Van Halen)

21. Van Halen - I do find a delicious irony in the fact that everybody kisses Eddie Van Halens ass about how great a guitarist he is yet as soon as the guy who can't even hold a tune leaves the band they turn to shit.
A perfect example as to why all these people who go on & on & on about the 'Technicality' of the guitarist are talking out of their asses.

20. Radiohead - A couple of years ago I would have said you were insane. Now i'd agree with you. I think it's obvious (to me anyway) Radiohead are on the slide. I'm not saying they're bad , far from it. I just think the last couple of albums have been average. I think they've become predictable which is always a bad thing when your known for taking risks. I know thousanRAB will disagree but I think sometime over the next couple of albums they're going to release an absolute stinker of a record.

19. The Grateful Dead - Never heard a single song by them

18. Snoop Dogg - I see him as a celebrity more than anything. I don't think I can remeraber a single song by him.

17. Coldplay - Don't even get me started on this bunch of whinging public schoolboy bores.

16. The Doors - Solid band but Morrison gets far too much credit

15. The Eagles - URGH! 70s soft rock , My idea of rock n roll hell

14. Garth Brooks - File under nobody outside the U.S. gives a flying fuck

13. John Lennon(post-Beatles) - Don't really know enough to comment other than a couple of singles. He did Fame with David Bowie , that was alright.

12. Eminem - Churning out the same old shit since the late 90s. the AC/DC of hip hop.

11. Kanye West - Typical MTV pop rapper they all sound the same to me.

10. The Rolling Stones - Done with this subject.

9. Nirvana - I'm no Nirvana lover but to put them in the same bracket as shitty bland no hopers like Alice In Chains is just cruel.

8. 2 PAC - I liked a couple of singles of course the hero worship now he's dead is annoying but he did pave the way for a lot of artists. Shame most of them were crap though.

7. Kiss - I love it how people slag off Kiss and then say they like the New York Dolls. I'm going to be contoversial now and say I loved their disco period.
You're right though , couldn't care less about them now.

6. Dave Matthews Band - See 14

5. White Stripes - What's wrong with having simple riRAB? How come nobody slags off Muddy Waters or Bo Diddley for the same reason?

4. Prince - Sounding timeless is a good thing as far as i'm concerned. He's released some real dross but he also made some of the best pop recorRAB ever. I think he's more than worthy of the credit he gets.

3. Bruce Springsteen - I've never been a fan of Americana or whatever it's called. Give me some blues or soul over this any day .

2. U2 - Should be nuraber one

#1!!!!!!!!! Mariah Carey - What's the point in having a great voice if you sing mindless dross. Mind you it was kinda funny when she went mental. Wouldn't put her as nuraber one because I can't actually remeraber anyone rating her , And I just ignore her anyway.
