Sugar's Journey into the Unknown

Sorry to interject here but honestly, At War with the Mystics is shit. The Soft Bulletin is undeniably their "pop record"; and one of the absolute best in that genre. Much less experimentalism on the Soft Bulletin than previous and later releases.

Possibly my favorite Lips song, and a song sure to stick in your head for days on end. The drums are killer too.

Baraboozle like the movie with Damon Williams in it directed by Spike Jones?

The banRAB I like are The Strokes, Art Brut, Artic Monkeys, KOL, guitar oriented alt. but my recommendations are in another direction,

Snowpony
Brazilian Girls
Natalia Lafourcade

I work in a really different way though, Schizo.
Things don't just happen for me like that very often.
I have to push things or they'll never get done.

I'm really glad I liked the Modest Mouse album, and I'm sure there'll be many more albums on here I like, but again, it's more so that I'm aware of these albums. So that I have the knowledge of the different artists and everything that's around.
I can now have a conversation, maybe not as substantial as I would like, about the three banRAB I've been suggested and listened to.
For me, this is really important.
And now I can listen to some more Modest Mouse, and hopefully I'll be able to like some more of their work.
It's all about how I learn, and how I push myself.
I guess I'm kind of challenging myself.

I get the reward of music itself, of course I do. I'm a musician. ^_^ But sometimes you just have to remind yourself there's more out there than you know.
Same way if you want to know something, you just Google it.

I don't know if that makes sense, but it worked in my head.

I've probably recommended Yes (the band I can never shut up about on this forum) as well then.

Anyway, for modern prog I'd recommend some of these.

Ritual - The Hemulic Voluntary Band: Swedish prog band with a heavy 70s prog influence but they have a very unique sound of their own, especially vocally.
Beardfish - Sleeping in Traffic: Part one: Another swedish group, they sound a LOT like 70s Yes and Genesis at times, with the exception of the vocals, which are really good and kinda sort of Jeff Buckley-ish.
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia: Their most assessible album and one of their most diverse, there's a little bit of everything in this record.
Frost* - Milliontown: I'm not a big fan of the so called neo prog movement but this is a major exception to the rule. The heavy use of synths, soft piano work, Steve Vai-ish guitar solos and raspy vocals make this an aqquired taste for some. But then again, most of the music I love is an aqquired taste, lol.
Battles - Mirrored: Now here's a band that actually has some hipster cred. Associated with math rock, but they sound more kin to Gentle Giant and Magma then they do to Slint or Polvo.
The Mars Volta - De-Loused In The Comatorium: Not much to say about this one, it's a pretty obvious choice. For the most well known modern prog group, they're more inaccessible than the other artists I've mentioned, so if you never heard them they're pretty freaking hard to describe.

If you like any of these then I'll recommend you some older stuff.

I try to take expand my horizons by following a kind of progression. I'll listen to a band, find something similar, listen to that, find something similar, get into to and so on. Years later, I look at what I like the most now and what I liked when I was first into music and the banRAB are totally different, yet I can still see the similarities. I find it very hard to step completely out of my element. Chances are if you are just starting to expand, totally changing your tastes will not happen.

So you like Coheed? I love Coheed...I started listening to Coheed because of my love for Rush. Awesome guitars and high distinctive vocals led to an interest in that. Maybe for you it can be reversed...check out the albums Moving Pictures and 2112.

Now, if you want to go a bit more extreme and don't mind heavy more check out Opeth. Very progressive. Amazing AMAZING guitar work. One thing that throws people about this band is the death metal vocals...but he only uses them when they suit that music because he actually uses clean vocals a bit more than the growl. Check out the album Ghost Reveries if that sounRAB interesting to you.

These albums may not be totally out of your element, but it is a definite expansion. Check these out and then I think one day you will LOVE Mezzanine just because your ear will be tuned more to pick up the subtleties of the music.

The biggest thing to me is the vocals, as I said before, which is why I had a hard time connecting with "Dissolved" and the following track. It stuck out so much, that I can't remeraber anything else about it, so I will most definitely be listening to some more of that album.

I also realized, since I was commenting as I listened, that most of the things I said were unimportant, I'll really have to work on that.

I second other people's recommendations of Arcade Fire's Funeral. I also think you should check out Being There by Wilco. Though it has lots of country influence, so if that's not your bag maybe you could check out Summerteeth, a more poppy and experimental album.

I don't have any recommendations for you off-hand, but I just wanted to let you know it thrills my heart that you're still listening to Beirut and Citizen Cope.

After taking back my fugazi Recommendation, I'm going to add
Nirvana - In Utero
Operation Ivy - Energy

If you need the links just ask, I'm really interested in what you would think of Energy, , it might not be the right album to choose for the situation you're in though just like I thought with Fugazi..

Urm... I actually don't think I have... I listened to a couple Massive Attack albums, a few Tricky albums, and some random thing by Portishead when I first started getting into trip hop and honestly none of them blew me away like some of the other banRAB I heard. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to say Mezzanine isn't a rather good album at times, but I don't prefer it to a lot of what I've heard. In fact, I have Protection and Blue Lines as well, and I'd say I prefer Blue Lines (don't kill me). Tricky I didn't like at all, and Portishead I just never got around to revisiting. I just prefer stuff like Sixtoo, Telepopmusik, and most of all Dirty Elegance.

Sorry to hijack your thread there Sugar  First review looks very good. Keep up the good work! Also, what did you listen to by The Shins? I definitely feel like Chutes Too Narrow is the most accessible album and probably the best place to start with them. But once you get into the band, Oh, Inverted World is a bit weirder but just as good. I can never decide which one I like more. I'd highly recommend listening to both, don't think Wincing the Night Away (their newest album) is nearly essential like the others.

That made perfect sense, I felt the same way when I was starting out. On second thought I'm just glad that you're motivated and I'm sure you'll enjoy your ride along the way. Looking forward to your next review.

^ I like that.
:3

The beginning made my head feel weird cause sounRAB were coming from different places of my laptop.
I don't know how to explain it.

But I like the song a bit. ^_^

I actually think I need to review things differently, take a different view.
I'm sure most people are going to say that this is obvious, but it's not something I noticed until just now.
When I listen to the album for the sake of reviewing, I'm unnecessarily critical.
When I listen just to listen, I have a completely different outlook.
+81 recommended me a bunch of albums and sent them all to me over my winter break and I was able to listen to them on the way back to school.
Had I listened to them with intention to review, I wouldn't have felt the same way as i do now.
Instead, I just played them all on a playlist as I rode home. I closed my eyes and jsut enjoyed what I was listening to. I was able to pick out favourite songs, songs that I'd probably skip, and songs I'm glad he chose for me.
I don't know how I'm going to review for now on, but I definitely need a different way to go about this.

So here's a question for anyone who feels like answering:

How do you review albums, and how would you suggest I review them?

Justice - Cross
(For my Kayleigh)

Why is the beginning so familiar?
OH MY GOD. THIS SONG IS BY JUSTICE?!
The first song on this album, Genesis, is amazing. It's the song we'd play at night while we were loading the pit truck at marching band.
We have a video and everything hahaha. I'm so excited. xD
I like that I hardly noticed the change between the songs.

I'm definitely finding myself rocking my head frm side to side, hahaha.
The music is catchy. Not too much to handle.
I like that I can listen to it in almost any setting.
It can be something to listen to while I'm calm or something to blast in the car with or something to dance too.

I never really liked D.A.N.C.E. I've heard it a few times cause a lot of my frienRAB like this album, heh.

I'm surprised, but I liked the track with Uffie after the second time. I first heard it in the Ke$ha thread and I wasn't too fond of it.
I heard it this time, and now I'm pretty sure I want to hear it again. =P

The beginning of Stress is too much for me, so I had to skip it. xD
I don't like repeated sounRAB like that building up. But I kept listening to it and I felt like I was in a car wash or something. xD

Overall, I really enjoyed the album. Due to the successful download, I can now listen to it at my leisure.

Sugar's Journey into the Unknown

As many of you might know, I don't listen to a lot of the music that's popular with the Music Banter merabers.
The music I know best is probably one of the most unpopular and least accepted types of music on the forums.
The other music I know well is classified under pop, and since it's overplayed and often looked down upon, it's the first music recognized if I list any of it in my interests.

Generally, this is what I've been listening to lately.

Coheed and Carabria
Lady Gaga
Chiodos
Green Day
Beirut
Citizen Cope
Emarosa

Now, am I against listening to other types of music? Of course not.
Would I be considered differently than other merabers because of some of the music on my list? Absolutely.
I was told once that most people with my music taste would essentially be made fun of on these forums, and that it was good that I kept my music tastes on the "DL."
Obviously I did that on purpose, but I shouldn't have to.
I don't listen to the Beatles, I don't listen to Radiohead, etc.
It's not because I hate them, it's because I just don't listen to them.
Okay well... I really don't like the Beatles, but that's not the point.
I don't CHOOSE not to broaden my horizons. I listen to a song. I like it. I keep listening. It just so happens that the people I'm around listen to music that I happen to like, and that music is often today's "emo" while the music I dance, drink, party to is today's "pop."
