Sugar's Journey into the Unknown

I say if you really want to challenge yourself...you being someone who admittedly likes vocals...try out the Campfire Headphase by BoarRAB of Canada. Truly a masterpiece in my mind, no electronic band has come close to this. However, it is all instrumental...but I think if you can get into it you will see how it is truly a desert island kind of album.

I would also be very interested to read a track by track account of your reaction to it.

Before I went to Uni I was really closwed minded about other genres of music.

Although not as bad as some I stuck bery much to the Alternative Genre whether it be Metal, Indie classic rock whatever really, as long as it was white men with guitars bass and a drum kit.

Then one of my frienRAB gave me some of the best advice ive ever had and to this day I still quote this guy to people, "All music is there to be enjoyed so why would you wanna restrict yourself"

Pretty simple really but absolutely spot on all music appeals to a certain people and therefore it could appeal to you gievn half the chance, whats the worse that could happen, you might not like it. On the other hand you could discover something mindblowing. All music's a journey and that one thing could take you in a completely different directions.

Now I listen to Reggae, Hip Hop, blues, jazz, soul, Dnb, Dustep, Trance, Dub and anything else you might think of. There really is good artists in almost every genre just waitng to be found.

Wow I completely lost track of this thread, you definitely need to listen to Frou Frou immediately if you like Imogen Heap. It's the trip-hop band she was with before she went solo. If you're interested I'll send some your way. And good call with The Unicorns :) one of my favorites.

Hehe, I'll definitely check out those.
Wilco I actually have on my Zune. I don't know what song it is or what comp got it there, but they're apparently in with banRAB I already listen to. =P
I have been hearing a lot about them, though, so I'll listen to some more.

The first thing I'm going to review is the artist I mentioned at the beginning of the thread. Starts with an "M."
I think next I might review The Shins because I've been hearing so much about them on this site.
I might do Meg and Dia's new CD. Their first one I loved, but I hated the second so much that I refused to listen to it or consider the band worth my time ever again.

I don't know how I'll do with five spins on an album I don't like much, but I'll definitely try. Looking up the lyrics is something I haven't tried unless I want to learn to sing a song, or I want to know the story of one, but that's definitely an idea I haven't yet considered.

Aside from the musical aspect, I'm really glad you like it so much. [= Thank you for the support!

I like this thread. I agree with everyone so far when they say this shouldnt be viewed as a necessity but i know you aren't thinking of it that way so that's cool. Genuinely wanting to listen to and discover music that is new to you or that falls outside of your comfort zone is, in my experience, a very enjoyable and rewarding journey and since i joined this site i've been doing a lot of it.

You already know that i think you should start with some Massive Attack :p: and i'll also get you that Alcest record among other things for now.

Ah that's such a good idea, I didn't think about instrumentals.
That way I can try focusing on everything aside from vocals.
Instrumentals made the biggest impact on me in my other thread on this forum. ^_^
I didn't think about that, thank you.

That's how I feel as well. Actually, you led me to really like pg.lost, which is a band I never would have discovered on my own.
In my journal, I mentioned you when I reviewed the band.

Story! You've grown up so much, I feel the need to mention this.
Besides that, I'll have you know that I really am not listening to this music because of everyone else. I hope you read my post through. ;] It's more because it's always good to know about everything you can, whether you like it or not. With music, and also books, I've noticed that it's better to have knowledge about as much as you can.

When I joined rab last year, I was just like this. Then I just started taking more and more suggestions from people, and now my taste isn't even recognizable. Good luck.

The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin

Let's be honest, I was unbelieveably nervous to review this album.
Almost halfway through the album, I wasn't sure how I felt about the band. or about this album at all.
I didn't have any strong feelings either way.
I didn't dislike what I was hearing though, I knew that much.

After "What Is The Light," I feel the album takes a turn for the better, it was when I decided I wanted to hear more, I even began restarting some of the songs so that I could hear them again.

I think my favourite part about this album, especially "Waitin' For A Superman" is the shared spotlight between percussion and vocals.
None of the instruments are too loud or too overwhelming. The harmony is quiet, the chime hits are well spread out.

"The Gash" wasn't one of my favourites with the choir and everything.
There's a really low bass who's not fitting in with all of the other vocals.

After that, it follows the "turn for the better" that I was talking about before. I love the beginning of "Sleeping on the Roof"
Scratch that. I love ALL of "Sleeping on the Roof"

Conclusion: As I said before, I was nervous before I listen to this album. I was nervous about what I would think, I was nervous about what all of you would think.
I'm glad that so many people recommended this to me.

Hehe thank you for the support.
And I didn't know if you wanted me to directly quote you or not!
I'll fix that. ;]]

^_^ You came into mind when I decided to do this, actually. ;P

I think a friend of mine listens to Frou Frou. [=
Do you recommend anything specific?
Thank you for being one of the only ones to follow my thread. You have good feedback.

Stress being the only track on that album that actually impressed me, my suggestion for you would be, to just try to listen to that track. As you are describing a lot of the music out there as "too much for you", I think it's time you maybe try to listen to them, instead of avoiding them. I think this alone, will help you immensely in your discovery.

Bump. Because I'm going to review the Massive Attack album again.
With a more open mind.
And maybe the new one as well.
I need to go through the recommendations again.

Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News

I decided to listen to Modest Mouse because I’ve heard a lot about them as well.
I’m going to try this one without talking only about the vocals. BanRAB deserve a chance as a whole.

The Horn Intro was definitely a surprise! I have no idea what I’m in for now, but I’m most definitely excited.
I like the simplicity of the guitar part at the beginning of The World At Large, something anyone could come up with, but it’s well harmonized. ^_^ I like how the background vocals are almost a call and response with the main vocals.
Of course, I love the keyboard instrument. A Vibraphone, if I’m not mistaken… which is one of my main instruments, how beautiful. [=
As NuraberNineDream said, it’s very easy on the ears, and I’m really enjoying listening to this, it’s something I can listen to over and over.
And I LOVE how the sound at the end sounRAB like a broken tape, but even that has a little fitting progression of it’s own.

The third song, Float On I’ve heard already, I think. I like it a lot. I feel like my daddy would like it, hehe, maybe I’ll have him listen to this later. :3
The multiple people at the chorus sounRAB a little weird to me, but I’m never a fan of things like that. There’s a song on 30 SeconRAB to Mars’ new CD with a bunch of people singing, and I don’t like that either. >.> Just to give an example. But I definitely still like the song.

Dance Hall makes me want to dance. Not going to lie.
Ohh, I love how Bukowski starts, I like that it’s slow and that the accent is on the upbeat. I think it’s going to be one of my favourites.
Ohh, the Horn Intro is in This Devil’s Workday.

I’m almost done with the album, and I can’t wait to get the Wi-Fi finally, because I definitely want to download this.

I’m on the last song The Good Times Are Killing Me, and the album took me longer to listen to ‘cause I had a hiatus for dinner, but I honestly loved it. TowarRAB the end, it seems like there are more slow, chill songs. It’s a peculiar, but surprisingly GENIUS way to end an album, in my opinion.
Good choice.
Can't wait to own this album. [=
Thank you, Shizotypic.
