Stitch! English Dub Edits

Doesn't Disney change some of the music in more than a few Miyazaki movies?
And on this note, music does not "make" the anime but it does contribute more than a little bit to it. I can see why a lot of people treat it like it's a big deal because it really can be an important tool at times and when treated with disrespect, the anime can come off as something more (or less) than it really is with generic or stale tunes instead (like for example 4Piece and Faulconer's DBZ score. I mean, have you seen Broly? It's like an AMV on Youtube but movie length)

Though yes, saying the music is the only main factor to a good anime can be a bit much. For example, I for one enjoyed some of Digimon Frontier's dub music and didn't think it detrimental to the show at all.
 
Music can and does make the anime. For instance, take Hikaru No Go. It's an anime about a board game. By all logic, it should be boring as hell. But, the music manages to make something as boring as a board game exciting and dramatic.
 
A few things:

1. I hate that it is cropped. That just sucks, and I can't believe we're still cropping in 2010 - most stores around me like Target and K-mart are selling full screen DVRAB for $3.00 while the wide screen counterparts are still full price - I thought we were done with the days of cropping! I have heard the Disney HD channel airs in widescreen - even older shows that were never seen wide screen before are shown as such. That could be the same here.

2. Be glad Sanders is back at all. He probably neeRAB to get used to the character again. Jodi Benson sounded a little different as Ariel in the 2008 "The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning" versus "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea" - I think you can 'forget' how you did a character and need time to sort it out.

3. If what you're saying is that they added animation for the Lilo gets a boyfriend part, that could explain edits in the first episode, and later episodes may not be edited. They added animation so it had to replace other scenes.

3B. I actually like they did this. I'm a stickler for continuity and hate with a passion any 'alternate universe' explanation - so I don't mind they did this.

I mean, I know Lilo said 'no one gets left behind' - but come on, how hypocritical are all of you to say that this violates that? First, it's a cartoon, so I personally don't care - but for those of you who do - think of your siblings or a pet - you get a boyfriend/girlfriend and who is the first person you stop going to movies with, playing dolls with, etc. - the brother or sister who occupied your time before your special someone.

Or how many of you have pets who you play with less and less as you get older, and it becomes less of 'your dog' and more of your 'family dog' as school sports, homework, weekend activities come into play.

If anything - Lilo was innocent but naive and her dumping Stitch is actually less Disney-idealistic and more true-to-life.
 
What if there was people who found it exciting and dramatic without the awesome music? =p It's all personal preference however you look at it.
 
A lot of good series that have been massacred in their English translation have had bgm changes to go along with it. There are a couple dubs I can think of (Zatch Bell) that had their bgm changed and were still mostly accurate.

It doesn't sound like this is a particularly good dub but I'm sure it could be worse.
 
Music is part of the whole. It can enhance the scene and often accompanies certain themes within a series. When you change the music, some of these nuances are ruined unless you make sure that every piece of replaced music matches the 'feel' of the original. Imagine certain scenes from Bleach without "Nuraber One", the end of Cowboy Bebop without "Blue", Gundam 00 without the 500 different versions of the "Celestial Being" theme/leitmotif, or
Kittan's sacrifice
from Gurren Lagann without "Libera me from Hell". It just doesn't work.
 
Finally got to watch it. It was ok. Could be worse. Could be a lot better...

I've already said my piece against the whole excuse to make this series canon. If this is Jeff Nimoy's idea of being real, then I don't buy it at all.

Yeah, I admit I got the info on Wikipedia about Saunders coming back. (sigh)

I bolded the ones for people who most likely don't know them.

Eden Riegel is known for being in the drama All My Children, and had minor roles in films such as American Pie and Year One. Oh, and she's Sam Riegel's sister.

Jess Winfeld is mostly known being involved the Lilo and Stitch series.

Don't know much about Ted Biaselli, other than him voice acting a few characters in The Super Hero Super Squad Show.

Despite never hearing of Keith Silverstein, he's actually been involved in a lot of anime dubs, but mostly for minor roles.

It is kinda cool to see Diskin back to vocie acting (Since KiRAB Next Door, I haven't heard him in anywhere else)

This is actualy a pretty good cast. Lots of variety.
 
first watching it now, I can tell the voice actors have changed, it is so obvious they couldn't get the old ones, but oh well.

I think it has to do with the experience of the VA, like if they could do post lay. Maybe the originals couldn't do post lay and not be able to do the show.

I think Steve Blum would've been the best choice to voice stitch.
 
Any time I hear alternate-timeline in anime, I think of the Tenchi franchise (Muyo, Universe, In Tokyo). Are there other animes this would apply to?
 
I'm not sure if Lilo dumping Stitch by having a boyfriend is more true-to-life. While school work and other activities come up for people, I don't think a lot of people would love their pets less to the point of leaving them.

As for the music, I don't really think that's too much of problem. I can understand why some people would be bothered by that, but changing the music usually doesn't affect the quality of a dub to me. In many cases, some of the original background music can be better than the dub, like in the cause of Yu-Gi-Oh!, but I still enjoy the dub. Some dub music can be better/more appropriate in certain scene than the original music pieces. It all comes down to personal preferences.
 
Well, seeing as Blum is arguable one of the best anime voice actors out there, I am sure he could have done the voice perfectly, seeing as he has done voices like it before, even before Guilmon. Money isn't an option, since this is Disney, I just think they didn't care enough to get the best for a show that they don't even know will get picked up outside of Asia.
 
A lot of people are trashing this dub before it's even really gotten out of the gate. I watched it, and while it was clear it had been Americanized, it came out pretty well. Ben Diskin is good as Stitch, I don't think people are giving him enough credit for that. The other voices are okay, I'm sure they will improve. Eden Riegel was very good as Yuna, she made her sound sweet without being annoying, which is a hard thing for voice actresses to balance. They also left in some Japanese vocabulary in order to give the show a certain flavor, so it's not like Nimoy took an axe to this thing and tried to turn it into something it's not.

By the way, from the credits, it would seem that Jamie Simone (of Naruto fame) is doing the voice direction, and VAs like Derek Stephen Prince, Stephanie Sheh, and Laura Bailey all have roles on this show. If they wanted Blum, I'm sure they could have easily called him in (and may yet do so), but they made a creative decision that I think is working out well. I'd would definately like to see more.
