Star Trek

You know that episode of Enterprise when the time-travelling First Contact Borg end up sending a message to the collective (presumably "we found humans. Resistance was futile. They tasted like chicken. Buffet open.")? Well the new film doesn't override that so one way or another the Borg are coming and maybe this time Q won't be there to give warning. And that's assuming they survive the whale probe, or the space amoeba, or Lazarus...

The Nokia ring tone on young Kirk's phone when driving the car was a neat touch.

The only (very, very minor) complaint I would have would be regarding JJ Abrams' cinematography - lens flare overload man!

Yeah, it was funny how Nokia managed to get product placement into a Star Trek film.

I agree about the lens flare issue. A very minor complaint for me too, but in certain scenes it looked like the actor was behind a pane of glass.

I think the characters will be altered in the up-coming films because of the alternate time line and the effect that it had on them. Kirk was already altered because of what happened on the Kelvin. And prehaps Spock will be conflict between logic and emotions therefore he is different to the spock we saw in TOS.

Im so so sorry i know whats coming, i know what you have already said and what you will say to me but im going to say it anyway!
I think im the only one i know who didnt like it.
Its not the actors or characters, the FX, the updating or visual changes it all looked and sounded fine.
Im affraid its the plot!
Having watched it you know what i mean and deep down in your hearts you all know that we have been kind of cheated out of the wonderful continuity that they had woven into every series and film.

As a stand a lone film it could work or with a tweak it could have saved the rest off them. I guess some one thought this through deliberately so they could spin off a whole new franchise, but the cost, as a true fan, is im affraid in reality, or even alternate reality, too high.
Maybe if this film was already set in a seperate altenative reality on its own from the begining(maintaining the 'original' reality intact) i could except it! I may be missing the point but thats not how the film is, is it?

Now thanks to this one everything you have ever watched, learnt, loved or felt for is totally rubbished. Every story line, event or character is undoubtably changed!
So did i watch TOS, TNG, RAB9, VOY, ENT + 9 other films for nothing because lets be honest, no band wagon banter about how its just a film, nothing of them now is worth **** because there is no way 'TREK' events can unfold to make them possible or credieble!

well, as an TOS devotee of a certain age (which is starting to get to me now!) i went to see it expecting to be disappointed. I wasn't!

It was great! I've read some of the reviewers comments about the plot, but they need to get some perspective. it is a big screen sci-fi blockbuster, it's not meant to be shakespeare.

I've never been a fan of the use of time-travel elements, but really think Abrams got it right here. the way he has re-booted the series, while preserving the heritage i think shows how much he cared about getting it right.

In terms of the other posts here, i agree, 'bones' was a work of genius and he easily had the best scences.

If you're unsure, go and see it. You will be entertained!

COMIC BOOK GUY LIVES!

Last night's 'Itchy and Scratchy Show' was, without a doubt, the worst episode ever. Rest assured, I was on the internet within minutes, registering my disgust throughout the world.

But, Aquaman, you cannot marry a woman without gills. You're from two different worlRAB... Oh, I've wasted my life.

I mean really - it's a movie.. a great popcorn munching, action blasting FUN movie.

Every movie has people who like it and don't like it. My wife hates Goodfellas but loves Sex and the City.. go figure.

But really..

I watch all my Blu Ray's and Hd programmes from my desktop pc which is connected to my lcd, picture quality is outstanding and I wouldn't swap it for anything else. A stand alone unit is easier to use I'm sure but a pc is way more flexible in playing back different HD formats.

Back on topic :D Star Trek was a cracking movie, any idea when the next one is coming out?

i watched the original star trek every week when it aired. I was 12 and thought it was amazing. I have never gotten into the newer series - they were to slick. However, I loved the movie. Yes, the future was altered - it would need to be if there are to be a few more. I thought the cast were excellent having to not only play the parts put actually act in the style of the original cast members. Chris Pine had that looking down upward stare down really well

As a long time Star Trek fan I was unsure about going to see this but decided to give it a go - WOW!!! Definitely a 10/10 from me :)

The characterisations were spot on - Kirk, Spock, 'Bones', Uhura, Scotty - all perfect as younger versions of TOS characters.

Can't wait to go and see it again!!

I just saw the film this afternoon and was impressed. Karl Urban as Bones was the best of the cast and only the guy playing Chekov seem to not quite grasp the mannerisms as well. The 'alternate timeline' I can see not sitting well with some but Trek has, over the years, started to suffocate under it own convaluted and ofter contridictory history. Overall a great effort to re-energise (no pun intended) a franchise that had lost its way of late.

RE The Spock/Uhura stuff, in the original series, wasn't William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols' kiss as Kirk/Uhura the first interracial kiss to be shown on screen?

Saw the movie earlier today and loved it :D :D agree with Karl Urban stealing the show. HATED Scotty, thought Simon Pegg's acting was hammy and his accent was awful. His tribble stole his scenes 'get down from there!' lol :D

Finally! Someone mentions Trek's equivalent of Jar Jar Binks!! :p

Well spotted. I hadn't thought of that.

Even though Russians do not have a problem with V's. Vladivostok anyone!? ;)

That and it added a bit more to the whole Kirk/Spock relationship.
Here's Jim Kirk thinking he can charm everything in a skirt, and gets knocked back twice by Uhura, only to have her go off with pointy eared Mr.-Rod-Up-His-arse-Spock. (In Kirks eyes, that is).

Totally agree with that. There seemed to be a lot of glass panels on the bridge and I kept thinking people were standing behind one because of the lens flares!

I mean, aren't lens flares those annoying things that professional photographers try their damnedest to get rid of? They're optical artifacts that get in the way of the actual picture. Why stick them in intentionally?

Hmm tricky one. Some may say that you should start from the originals and then watch this BUT I don't think you need to. This film is a perfect introduction to all the characters.
............

And talking of characterisation. Did anyone notice the perfect Shatnerism that Pine gave at the end?

when he says "Bones.... buckle up"? The whole mannerism was so Shatner.
?

I thought it was fairly average. Not enough story and padded out with lots of blurry "action" and running about.

Some good funny moments and noRAB to star trek and some of the voices were spot on.

Wasn't really convinced by the below decks Enterprise basically being an oil refinery.
