If they are now in an alternative timeline, then what will happen when the big black probe comes looking for whales? Maybe the crew won't be on hand to save the day this time and the earth will be destroyed by the probe.:eek::D

Loved the film by the way.
 
Thought it was pretty good, not great (due to a fairly ordinary plot) but lots of fun.

The sort of film I can see as a staple on Boxing Day/New Years Day afternoon in the future. A good way to recover from overindulgence and a long lie in.

I thought the main characters were really well played (althogh Scotty had some wobbly moments) but the young Chekov was outstanding.
 
Saw the movie today (with the wife and a mate from work) at Birmingham Imax, loved it.
However I think I found a flaw (hiding it though)
At the point where the Enterprise was being pulled into the singularity, it is about just stationary at maximum warp. They dump and detonate the warp core(s) to effect an escape. So why wasn't the Enterprise pulled in as soon as the dump took place?
Loved Scottys tribble.
Karl Urban gave the truest character 'interpretation' for me.
Laughed at poor Checkov's computer pronunciation problems :)

Can't wait to go and see it again.
 
I too just got round to seeing this earlier ( Saturday ) ..thoroughly enjoyed it, like all Star Treks its essential to suspend belief..what struck me about the movie was how comfortable I became with the actors portraying the classic characters...especially Kirk..I found myself believing and didn't spend the entire film comparing the current day actors to Shatner, Nimoy etc
 
Yes, but I was referring more to the fact that they decided to go with the traditional look of a phaser beam and then promptly changed it to a completely different effect.
 
For me the biggest dissappointment thinking back all those couple of days ago was the weakness of the villian. The best goodie/baddie films have excellent villians. The best ST films have excellent villians - Khan, Chang, Borg Queen. Nero was a nothing character with no charisma and no real part to play. I think JJ missed a trick by not introducing a new, major recurring role for a bad guy who can come back in future films and play the protagonist against Kirk.
 
A lot of people seem to missed this, you have to understand that the whole Star Trek franchise from TOS till the begining of this film DIDN'T happen!

Kirk's brother Sam wasn't born

Spock going back to Vulcan for the pubity thing didn't happen (how's he gonna cope with that??.... there's pressure building Cap'n!!)

The Klingons may or may not get thier facial ridges back

Voyager won't get lost in the Delta Quadrant

So it all has to start again.



And has anyone told The Borg :eek:
 
Simon Pegg was fabulous, his scenes where he was in his element reminded me of Scotty in San Fransisco in the 1980's talking into the mouse saying "hello computer", then cracking his fingers and saying "how quaint". I knew then that JJ Abram's Scotty would grow up to be Gene Roddenbery's Scotty . His accent was meant to be dodgy, a nod to James Doohan's not quite right one.

Blimey maybe I shouldn't have badmouthed TNG, its like going into the pets forum and saying you hate cats. Nah, what the hell, TNG must die!!!!
 
I can totally see where you're coming from, as a fan of the original series and films. However, I grew up with TNG and so, inevitably for me, that will be 'real' Star Trek. I was never a fan of the original series, which is why I was a bit dubious about watching this latest film. But, as I've said further up the thread, I absolutely loved it from start to finish!
 
What would a Star Trek thread be without an anorak , and here I am.

To be accurate , Jeffrey Hunter played Captain Pike in the first Trek pilot , The Cage .

In The Menagerie , Sean Kenney (IIRC) plays the injured Captain Pike and JH only appears in scenes taken from The Cage.

Pilot fans will enjoy the season 3 Bluray which features The Cage with new and old effects aswell as the 80's version with some B&W footage and intro from Roddenberry.

The latter is sd only.

Also in HD is the original version of Where No Man Has Gone Before as shown to executives before it was re-edited into the regular Trek episode format
 
Saw it yesterday and thought it was very good. Thought the noRAB to the original series were nice, I especially liked when Kirk is caught with green lady.
I too thought that the chances of Kirk accidentally meeting the old Spock were slim but this is a fillm after all. :)
 
Its talk like that that near killed the franchise:eek: and made it lame and boring for the general public to see.

Star Trek was supposed to be an optimistic exiting adventure in the future not a geeky science techno-gabble fest it became.
