Star Trek

I saw this yesterday and really enjoyed. Exciting, funny and well acted (the character playing McCoy really stood out imo). That's not to say it was without it's flaws, there are one too many plot holes (Spock leaving Kirk on the ice planet), and the science was very questionable (a supernova threatening the entire galaxy???).

The new timeline was a very brave move imo and I'm not surprised a lot of trekkies are upset. Maybe a parallel Universe approach could have made people happier, rather than just scrubbing the entire Star Trek canon bar Enterprise. On the other hand, I'm not a trekkie, so couldn't really care.

As for people not getting that it's a new timeline. WTF. It was spelt out 100% clearly in the film and anyone who's watched past Star Trek should be familiar enough with the concept to have understood what was going on the moment it became clear that Nero was from the future (which was about 10 minutes into the film). Time Travel resetting the timeline is used a lot in Star Trek, the only difference this time round is that the timeline wasn't put back to it's original state by further intervention.

I want to stress, i have never ever seen ANYTHING to do with Star Trek, never got the hype, it always flew over my head....

but i saw the film tonight with open eyes and i LOVED IT. I can sit and watch a film of Star Trek but not a whole series.:p

Loved this though, Zachary sure did look like Spock, i found the guy who played Kirk abit annoying at the beginning but he came round in the head.

4/5 :)

Just seen it tonight, totally and utterly loved it !!

Was in fear of a "phantom menace" but thankfully there were no JarJar Binks moments at all, I thought the references to the other movies and other series were fantastic, the casting was utter brilliant, Karl Urban totally nailed the McCoy role as did Zachary Quinto, he WAS Spock, at no point did I think of Sylar.

There was the spark of chemistry between the crew which could have so easily been missing, it was funny without being too "Red Dwarf", it also caught the fun and excitement of the original Star Trek without the nerdy edge to The Next Generation.

All in all an excellent film and I'm seriously tempted to see it again.

I was thinking that too, but if I recall correctly the camera moved from inside the bridge, out the window to outside the ship. It didn't flip upside down or anything during this move.

A standalone has to be better than anything that relies on Windows/Microsoft hardware for its reliability

Can't say I've ever had any of my standalone dvd players go mad like my laptop players often do.

The plot of QoS isn't complex at all.

It's a revenge flick where Bond employs Greene as a proxy to track down Vesper's treacherous boyfriend.

Anyhoo why get your knickers in a twist over this particular Star Trek re-boot?

It happened virtually every week in Voyager & they eventually even made a knowing joke out of it with Starfleet from the future regularly popping in attempting to repair the wholesale damage Janeway was doing to the historical timeline.

You seem to think that the latest incarnation invalidates all previous Star Trek history & mythology.

Which is patently absurd.

Even if it would be nice to consign Enterprise to oblivion. ;)

When old Spock mentioned something about "120 years hence", I thought that was Leonard Nimoy revealing his true age!

That dude is old. Older than Methuselah.

Bones was cool though, his "Damn it man!" was on the money!

Cool film

^^^^

To the above posting, don't attribute all those bad points to me - it was someone else who was making them and I simply replied to them

I love the film!!!!

Here's a point I thought about...

So Vulcan gets sucked into the black hole and there's only 10k Vulcans left. Surely Vulcan had some other colonies? Is Vulcan the only inhabited world in its system?

Thanx. I had guessed as much, but just wanted the opini9on of someone with a bit more technical knowledge. I shall go and look for a standalone player at the weekend. The first blu ray I will watch is gonna be Star trek, I have it on DVD but im dying to see it in HD.

OH thought he saw a continuity error when

Kirk was fighting the Romluan on the ship he's sure there was already a gun on the platform Kirk was pulling himself up on before he grabbed the romulans gun

Don't think we really need to spoiler tag stuff in a thread about the film do we?

Shinzon was in no way cool. He was a pantomime villain in a dreadful Trek film. Eric Bana acted far better than Tom Hardy did in Nemesis, too.

True but I think the main intent of this film was to introduce the characters- see it more as the first part of a trilogy. In doing so they steered away (if not a little too far) from Nero in order to get all the characters introduced and in place in 2 hours.

As for a recurring villain - I will place high bets that the Klingon's will feature in the next film (s)- essentially they are star treks original villains and Kirks real recurring nightmare. There is no doubt about it from the success the movie has achieved that Paramount will be commissioning another possibly 2.

Remember they are trying to get back to basics- they have now set the scene got the crew together added there background so there now ready.

The next movie neeRAB to have a strong underpinning narrative and bad guy(s) and not introduce one after the other in each film. Remember this is original Trek- without the Klingon's it wont be right!

I saw it tonight and though it was pretty enjoyable, certainly watchable and its good to see Star Trek entering back into the mainstream. However i agree with others that the plot was pretty poor and largely forgettable, but the character development and acting was great. A few corny bits for kiRAB made me cringe too, but overall it was a good action summer blockbuster.

I felt it was largely forgetable and ive got no rush to see it again in all honesty. The best movies make me think about them for days even weeks after watching them, but this one hasnt really struck any chord with me. Looking forward to the potential of sequels though. Hell im even hoping for the chance of a new series since its so popular.

LOVED it. Went to a 2:30ish showing this afternoon and it was absolutely packed.

I thought casting was spot on, action was great (even with the shaky-camera-syndrome) and there was enough humour and drama to keep me entertained. I can see why the film has been generating such rave reviews.

Cheers mate, its only banter. Both series have its good and bad episodes and I have spent many a happy day watching TNG after a day at college. Its just I adore TOS and the original crew.
