songs that provoke tears

i fail to get my head round the fact another human being can make me cry just through song lyrics, but i already know they can. The song i love but hate to listen to because it makes me shiver is

Lisa Gerrard -Now we are free.

I think its the one that makes me close to tears because its beatiful to listen to, and the fact that it uses made-up lyrics is part of its appeal. Instead of lyrics that may just be made up for the effect of creating a sad song which actually mean nothing to me personally.

although songs such as

Sage Francis -best of times

are real thought-provoking, just because i can relate.

That one never did it for me. It's just a little too... I dunno... something. But Sufjan does get me sometimes. Mostly these two:

I agree Across the Universe is a very beautiful song. I never interpreted it as describing the dream of oneness with a loving universe before that dream falls apart, though, so I never thought of it as a sad song, like you do, until now.

To me it seems like a song about the painful beauty of living and the euphoric loveliness of it all. It sounRAB like a song of welcome and encouragement to let yourself really be moved by life and unbothered by the little troublesome aspects of it.

Pure Imagination - Gene Wilder (From Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)

This definitely made me cry the bizarre happy sort of tears when I was a child, and still gets me to this day. When they put this song in the background of an AT&T commercial earlier this year, it made me tear up all over again.

Way To Fall - Starsailor

This one gets me almost every time.

Fur Elise - Beethoven

Never been able to listen to this one without crying. Even when I'm trying to play it myself on piano.

"Here Comes a Regular" by The Replacements made me almost tear up recently.

Also I might have teared up to The Smiths or The Cure a couple years back, which in retrospect seems kinda cliched. But no song has actually made me cry. That would be taking stuff way too seriously.

i don't find it too sad, it is very euphoric in a drifting sort of way. more bittersweet, i guess. it gives me a sense of endlessly spiraling upwarRAB that moves me to tears with its beauty.

This one's mostly associative, but it does get to me to the point that I usually skip it on the occasions that I bring this record out these days.

This one's silly and I'm not sure why it gets me but it does. Especially the end.

I think it's actually this whole album that does it, but this comes toward the end and sums it up perfectly.
