songs that provoke tears

That'd be my favorite Joy Division tune; can definitely see where you're coming from on this one, as Ian's vocal delivery is more convincing than anywhere else.

@boarRABofcanada: Great songs AND username. :) Don't think we've met yet. Welcome.

Call me a faggot if you want but I always get sad..and not really cry but almost when I hear "Untitled" by Simple Plan
Because the message in the song..

(sorry for the lyric video)

That was a very intimate rendition, especially for being outside.

I always tear up listening to Get it Together by the Go! Team. It makes me want to be a kid again.

I think this song is about being upset at all the bad in the world and feeling like its your fault.

Is it weird to sap out to classic hardcore punk?

Many, many Cat Power songs make me teary, but especially this one. And she's the only artist that can do that constantly.

i had a very similar reaction to this song....

there are a couple of Sigur Ros songs that choke me up....but this is mainly due to the videos....especially the one where the kiRAB jump off the cliff...i cannot watch that

and this song gets me everytime

I've posted this song on a similar forum before, but dam this song is just so heartfelt and emotional first time I heard it I teared up.

When I was 16 I was obsessed with Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. When I heard this song it was kind of sad to hear knowing it was the last recorded song Kurt did, supposedly it was going to be used for lollapalooza and was recorded a few weeks before his death. The lyrics could be really associated with anything he was going through in his life and at the time I did get a bit teary eyed. Today I find it pretty emotional.

Definitely...
So very helpless; bleak (in the strongest way out of all Joy Division songs)

This verse almost always does it for me:

I campaigned for nothing
I worked hard for this
I tried to get to you
You treat me like this

So straightforward, but speaks volumes...

With the story behind Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven", I actually shed a tear. Not to mention it is a beautiful piece.

^Its funny you should mention Townes. As soon as I read this thread I thought about this song,

I wouldn't say I actually sit down and shed tears, but these songs give me chills and my eyes become watery.

This song and artist might be over hyped, but if this doesn't touch you then you better make sure you're still breathing.

YES. to Joanna Newsom.

Cat Power and NMH also do it for me, but more with these songs:

(at the "I could stay here, become someone different..." part)

and

(at "And in my dreams you're alive and you're crying...")

Others that leap to mind:

[edit: well the last one won't work, but it's "Walking on a Wire" by Richard & Linda Thompson]

A lot more. I kind of get teary-eyed more than I'd like to cop to.

Yes, I like that Wilco song rendition, too!

I'm surprised that "Get it Together" makes you tear up! The song sounRAB so thoroughly happy to me! Maybe it is the nostalgia it inspires that makes you sad?

Here's a song that made me cry the first several times I heard it: "Saving all my Somedays," by someone who was on rabroad. Ack! I just tested it out again, and it *still* makes me tear up!
