On the terms of being to long for a sequel you could say the same thing but don't underestimate nostalgia factor.
There is no way every person who saw and enjoyed the first two films, both children and adults alike, just instantly forget about them.
It hasn't really been to long. The last movie came out when I was 13 or 14 and at that time I still had memories from the first two movies.
Yeah. It felt like something was missing. I felt Shrek the Third was alright but it wasn't as good as the first two films.
