Why the hell would Sony do this?
Anyone with a HDTV only capable of 1080i will be forced to play many games in 480p.
Many of the older HDTV's are NOT capable of 720p, and many PS3 games, such as Resistance:Fall of Man, are not capable of running in 1080i. Therefore, the only alternative for someone owning an older HDTV is to play it in EDTV, which is 480p.
All that pretty much means is people who own an older HDTV will NOT be able to play most of the games in HDTV, as almost all of them do not support
1080i.
IGN confirmed it. They said they tried it on a 1080i TV that cannot accept 720p input sources and the games played in 480p on the TV.
I hope nobody is waiting for a Sony confirmation on this. It's not like they will ever confirm this. If it's a software issue, they will probably update the dashboard without saying anything.
Isnt this sony, who is supposed to have the true "HD" gaming system. This havent been left out, this was intentional.
The debate between 720 and 1080i is very irrelevant to this, because for a new console not to support this is ridiculous. Im so glad i have a 360.
Sony, once again, shows their inability to deliver on the promises they set. The 360 is the only *true* HD gameing console out of the box. MS gives you the cables you need, and supports *all* HDTV's. The PS3 emphatically does not.
Sony's 'paper launch' this year is really pretty sad and dissapointing. While I obviously support MS over Sony, even I was hoping/expecting more from this launch... but Sony has failed to even live up to my pesimistic expectations.
--------------------------------------------------
1) They failed to launch when they said they would.
2) They failed to have a world wide launch.
3) They failed to meet the numbers they promised at 1 million units on launch day.
4) They failed to meet the 100k units on launch day in Japan.
5) They're not going to hit the 400k units on day one here (likely half that).
6) Blu-ray hasn't proven to add anything to games, and in fact has only proven to read disks slower than most would like.
7) The system can't be used on an HDTV out of the box (regardless of which version you buy). You're going to need to buy HD cables.
8) The Online system is fractured, and inconcsistent... some of the launch games axed multiplayer entirely because Sony couldn't deliver the libraries.
9) Users can't respond to any of their friends in games.
10) Sony's PS3 OS is bloated, and consumes 3x the resources the 360's OS consumes (which does effect available memory games use).
11) The PS3 will downscale 720p & 1080p HD content to 480p on any HDTV that doesn't support 1080p & 720p (which is a fairly high percentage).
12) Cross platform games are BETTER on the 360 (Call of Duty 3, Tony Hawk, NHL, etc, etc, etc).
13) HD-DVD is doing much better than Blu-ray, and with 360 - gamers can pick up the cheapest and *best* HD-DVD player out now, but PS3 is stuck with Blu-ray and requires *every* user to buy it with the system.
14) PS3 is massively expensive.
