SHOCKING NEWS: 720p PS3 games downscale on older HD sets ***RANT***

I was under the assumption that most all TV's scale whatever they are fed into thier native resolution. My TV's does 1080p native, Im pretty sure it takes whatever signal it is fed, anywhere from 480i to 1080i, and scales it to 1080p. The only case where the display shouldn't have to do any scaling was when it was fed a 1080p signal over HDMI which is the only input on my TV which accepts a 1080p signal...

Oh, and BTW, PS3 doesn't upscale DVDs or PS2/PS1 games. It doesn't upscale ANYTHING.

The 360 is a fucking awesome DVD players. It will upscale movies to any resolution, including 1080p. I just watched Superman Returns on it, on DVD, and it looked like high definition. It looked great. 360 also upscales original Xbox games.

Sorry if this has been answered before, but: If a TV supports 1080p, does that means it automatically supports 720p as well?

Thanks

Partially true. A lot of older TV's simply don't know what to do with 720p though. It's a technology that they simply don't have. It's like feeding my 1080i TV a 1080p signal, the screen goes blank.

I don't understand or you are fucking stupid. If the TV doesn't support 720p, of course "720p" won't work

It's not Sony's fault. Are you complaining because because Sony is supporting a higher resolution?

It just shows how fucking stupid and ignorant you are if you think upscaled dvd looks ANYTHING like HD, even 720p.

OT video game company fanboys like you are by far the biggest idiots on this forum. And that's saying a lot.

Well have you seen DVDs upscaled on a 360? I have mine set to upscale everything to 1080p, and the movies look great. They aren't HD, but they sure look way closer than regular DVDs look.

BTW, I own a HD-DVD player, so I know what HD-DVD titles look like. Don't call me fucking ignorant if you haven't seen what upscaled DVDs on a 360 look like.

It is widely known that the 360 upscales DVDs like a fucking champ. You should see for yourself.

Idiot.

It might upscale like a champ but the source is still 480p. There is no way that 480p upscaled is going to look as good as 1080p.

My TV upscales any cable channel it sees to the native of 1080i on my set but Discovery HD always looks better than standarn Discovery.

Weird. I used to calibrate HDTVs and am a fashion photographer who shoots all digital. I think I know a little more about picture quality and resolution than you do you stupid little dipshit nerd.

Since a majority of HDTV owners will have 1080i, so the PS3 blu-ray playback should pose no problem. We still get to enjoy blu-ray in HD, but not "ultra-HD". However, I guess people with HDTVS that don't support 720p are screwed though with games

Hoever, it seems as though US PS3 will not downscale Bluray movies to 720P but Japanese PS3s will. (probably due to copyright protection rules)

These are reports for avsforums.com (bunch of a/v geeks) and I assume they know a little about what they are talking about
