Seth MacFarlane to Reboot The Flintstones

I think they'll just air it @ 7 PM (if they can change things around for it to air there). Since it's obviously not gonna be like any of the other McFarlene shows it'd be good to air @ 7. If it stays on the level of The Simpsons in terms of appropriateness I think it'll appeal to both kid and adult fans.

Without Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm, the Flintstones and Rubbles aren't families; they're just couples.

Nah, I don't see that happening. After such a long hiatus, I really doubt Seth would opt to go with another time skip, especially since FOX wouldn't be interested in an animated show with no domestic element. Given that he's a fan of the original series, he'll probably just keep everything intact, except for possibly making Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm a little more verbal and mobile so they can actually take part in stories.

By not being held to CN's content standards gives me a bad feeling this could turn into some sort of ugly trainwreck if Seth starts injecting really crass humor into the show.

Was anyone actually clamoring for a Flintstones reboot? Really? I mean, its not like the Looney Tunes where people always want them to remain relevant. The Flintstones is basically an old memory now with a few cereal/vitamin commercials.

Honestly, I have faith that MacFarlene will treat this with respect. I think he knows what he's doing here and I think he knows and respects the source material. This could turn out to be pretty good.

And tbh, it'll probably end up on CN after FOX.

True.

But just like the Looney Tunes, The Flintstones is an evergreen franchise; meaning if studio execs feel they can still make $$$ off of it, they'll keep on revisitng it.

...

A part of me wants to be upset, while another part of me is so morbidly curious to see how he handles a classic franchise like this, I'd almost say go for it. I'm honestly torn here.

He better put more effort into this than he does Cleveland; that's all I can say.

I'm not sure how to feel about this.

On one hand, we all associate Seth with the humor we see in Family Guy. But, like others have said, he got his start with Hanna-Barbera working on shows like Johnny Bravo. He seems to have a respect for The Flintstones so I don't think he would turn it into another Family Guy or Cleaveland Show. But I guess we'll just wait and see.

Funny, I just checked the callendar, and it didn't say April 1st.

Seriously, not only is MacFarlane leaning on his generic "fat dad / hot mom / awkward kids / mean baby / eccentric supporting character who woudn't normally have the ability to talk" family sitcom formula for the fourth time in a row, now he's not even bothing to to take five minutes to come up with new character names, he's just gonna remake a fifty-year-old show that was already an animated remake of The Honeymooners? There's lazy, and then there's LAZY.

I mean, I haven't watched The Flintstones in probably 25 years, and it's not like it's some kind of sacred cow (as I said before, the original series was just a prehistoric rip-off of The Honeymooners), but it boggles the mind just how little effort MacFarlane has put into his post-Family Guy shows. Matt Groening's Futurama has NO characters or basic dramatic/comedic situations that are directly based on anything in The Simpsons. Aside from the similar art styles, the shows are as unalike as possible, while MacFarlane is essentially taking his $100 million and thumbing his nose at Fox, pocketing about 90% of the cash for himself and spending what little is left on the actual writing and production on his assembly-line cartoons. It's shameless, utterly shameless.

Considering Seth's respect for the show and his previous experience working on Dexter's Lab and Johnny Bravo, I'll trust him on this. I'm just glad we're getting a new Flintstones show at all. It's been too long since we've had one. Very interested to see some of the new ideas for stone age appliances/gadgets (The bit about the iPad definitely sounds interesting.) and the use of more modern story telling methods applied to these classic characters. I've always enjoyed Family Guy and American Dad (Cleveland show is a bit hit or miss with me.), but I hope Seth can break away from his style and present something a bit more similar to a truly modernized version of the classic show. Consider me intrigued. :)

That's what worries me - it's been years since he's made a show that isn't just a sad soup of dead baby comedy and pop culture references. The chances of him doing a 180 and making a sucessor to the Flinstones that remains family friendly and true to the source are next to nothing IMO. :ack:

While Seth's more often than not shown his love for Bedrock's residents, fan-driven revivals have always been hit-or-miss. And given that his work with Dexter and JB have been ages ago, I'm quite wary about whether or not he'll be able to pull it off.

I'll be blunt: No kidding. Replace "somewhat" with "excessively" and you would have the appropriate attitude to the situation.

I have no faith in MacFarlane's capacity to handle this. His cartoons to date only imply that he can't help himself, and they all vary considerably in terms of quality. Sometimes his material is A-grade, often it's just vapid and coarse. This does not bode well. And it's very sad how one man has come to all but monopolize animated sitcoms in these days. I cannot wait until his time is over, if only to get some damn diversity on TV again beyond established mainstays like The Simpsons and South Park.

Give him a chance. While I understand that he can be unpopular and that not everything he makes is golden, the bashing needs to stop.

I don't think anyone stands a chance with this cartoon simply because too many people love it, but out of everyone Seth MacFarlane has a pretty good chance of making it interesting.
