Scott Pilgrim vs The World

Saw this as a preview on Monday and I have mixed feelings. I'd never heard of the comic/book or anything to do with Scott Pilgrim, so I went in open minded. Overall it was ok, well made (the effects actually worked quite well!) and fast moving with really decent acting, however... I didn't really get the humour at all, it was all a bit random :confused:

Having said that, there was a lot of laughing in the cinema but mostly from the male members of the audience!

Never seen Kick Ass, so can't compare to that but definitely not as good at Superbad which is hilarious!

Without the concept of the evil exes, the video game style fighting and visual effects, then the film would have been Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

I am a a gamer and geek too, and I loved the visuals such as the universal logo - that was an uber nostalgia moment for me. And the fighting styles brought memories of Streets of Rage, Double Dragon, etc. without this you would have a standard Michael Cera Romance film. But each to our own.
 
This now holRAB the record as the only film I have ever walked out of.

What an absolute pile of S**t.

I didnt really fancy it but took notice of all the five star reviews and thought it must be good.

I think its about time Michael Cera tried to do something different.
 
Saw the trailer last night, didn't really know what to think from it. It seems to has some interesting stylistic features which could either be cool or annoying. It didn't really grab me tbh. But I'm still going to see it, trailers imo never get it right, they make great films look crap and bad films look good!
 
People might be a tad confused with Scott Pilgrim Vs the World. It has that guy from Superbad in it after all, so it's bound to be funny right?
Yes, the lovable Michael Cera is in it, essentially playing the same character he always plays (i.e George Michael from TV's excellent Arrested Development). But the film is targeted at a pretty defined market. And that market my frienRAB is the domain of the geek!
To really get the most out of the film, you need to be the type of person who would post on the digi-spy games forum for starters :D
And if you read comics too, then you would have reached your spiritual nirvana.

If you're expecting a run of the mill comedy, then you may not get Scott Pigrilm.

Really? Each to their own I guess.

The film obviously aims at a certain crowd, and I must be one of them as i'm going for a 3rd viewing sometime in the week ^_^..
 
I went to see this and two other films yesterday, and I have to say it was the second of best of the films I watched. But I did think it was pretty good, there were a lot of quirky moments that felt like a huge dream sequence. But overall it was a great film with excellent nostalgia points of any 20 + gamers out there.

I have to say that unfortunately Michael Cera is still Michael Cera, which is a disappointment - but his lack of skills didn't stop me from enjoying the film on a whole which is surprising and pleasant.

Visuals and soundtrack are pretty good and the acting on the most part was excellent, Kieran Culkin is really funny with his dry humour.

I think the reason it feels a little flat in the last part of the film is because they were filming this before the last comics had come out, so I have heard anyway, so this could be the possible reason for the slight disappointment at the end?

It also stars Mae Whitman - who I am a little bit in love with so the film gets points just for that :)

It would be interesting to see what DramatiCUTIE thought of the film since she/he was waiting for it for so long.

Also has people noticed the increase of Wide Eyed Actors of late, there seems to be a lot of people in perpetual states of shock.
 
The comic series is fantastic. I'm a bit shocked about Cera as Scott Pilgrim, as the character is completely different from Cera's typecast role. It will make or break him for me.
 
That is why the film works because everything else added to it makes it less boy meets girl, boy attempts to date girl, boy is Michael Cera (which is what Nick and Norah essentially is) and adRAB a whole new dynamic which makes it a really good viewing.

I personally can't stand Michael Cera because he has been the same thing since Arrested Development, and his films usually make me want to change the channel. This one however has a certain appeal that allows you to overlook Michael Cera.

What I was saying with my original statement was to get rid of the things such as the fighting and the gamer visuals is to get rid of the things that make the film unique and would strip it down to the "geek rom com" carcass.

With all the details good, without it bad :)
 
I saw this film on Wednesday and really struggled with it. On more than one occasion i thought about giving up and going to watch a different film in one of the other screens.

The acting was weak, the storyline was dreadful, the characters ranged from dull to pointless. The jokes didn't work (not a single laugh from anone in the cinema) and the fighting became tedius.

This joins the list of films I'll change the channel to avoid when on TV.
 
Saw this on Wednesday and loved it, but then I'm a 31-year-old videogames/sci-fi geek.

I have freinRAB who I know would hate it, I certainly wouldn't reccommend it to anyone.

I get the comparisons with Kick-Ass, it's true they are completely different but at the same time there are plenty of paralells in terms of tone.

I laughed a lot, and so did my girlfreind who is considerably less geeky than I, but this film certainly isn't for everyone.
 
Kick Ass is far far superior to Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

SPvTW isn't as funny and is aimed at a very small group of people - mainly 13-15 year old geeks.
Good effects, but thats all it has going for it.
