Scott Pilgrim vs The World

saw this earlier today.
I must admit, from how the advert presented - i wouldnt have fancied this movie at all, nor I am fan/interested in the comic books (didnt even realise there was comic books of this until reading this forum),
However - because of the director i was drawn to it. I love Wright's earlier work, especially Spaced.
So I saw it.
And it felt more like Kick Ass then anything: what i mean by that - an American comic book movie that isnt in the hanRAB of the Americans (even though its Canadian, but the accents sound the same to me). and there are some hilarious bits in the movie, a sharp, quick script with lots of witty lines and some great characters.
However, by the 3rd act - the film becomes a little boring and i had lost interest.
worth a watch though and i would recommend it,

I'm going to see it purely because it's been getting good reviews, but i have to admit that the trailer (and poster) puts me off immensely. If anything is going to hurt this films chances, it's the god-awful trailer that just isn't appealing at all.

Granted but the way the fighting is introduced completely changes the tone of the film and becomes monotonous.
And by rejecting the 17 year old gamer for an older girl who doesn't go for his Pac Man story, isn't he moving away from gaming at that point?

Well i'm twice your age and I loved it.

The only explanation I can ever come up with for films like this polarising opinion so much is that I think that some people expect a certain level of characterisation, depth of plot and story structure out of every film they see.

I look at a film like this and I can switch off an enjoy it totally superficially for what it is, and that's why i loved it and that's why i think some people essentially struggle with it.

I can watch something like the Truman Show and get completely immersed in it and really connect with the character of Truman, which is why I probably blubbed like a girl at the end of it because the enormity of what faced the character when he stepped through the door.

Granted, this could be completely wrong, but it's about the closest i've ever come to an explanation.

It was always going to be a cult film! It was never going to be a blockbuster smash. It will make up for its poor cinema performance on DVD sales though and there producers will get their money back!

Saw it today and thought it was amazing. Big fan of Wright. Its hugely entertaining and just lots of fun. It is a comic book and a video game combined to make a movie

Yes, I agree with this.

Kick Ass looked by the trailers to be a comedy, but if it was meant to be one, it was about the least funny comedy I've ever seen. Good stylised action flick, but very little comedy in it. Scott Pilgrim basically sets it's stall out from the beginning for comedy and works very well.

The trailer I saw again and again at the cinema was pretty true to the tone and style of the film. It showed the on-screen graphics, the video game style and some of the over the top action.

I'm like you, I can watch films and not expect a lot of characterisation or depth of plot, but I do want something that will allow me access to the film. With ths film I couldn't find it. At the start when you had various graphics popping up explaining who people were quite off putting. For me that showed that there is a big gap between me and the target audiences.
There have been a few films this year based on comics (non Marvel/DC) and this is the only one I couldn't get into and reminded me I'm not a comic reader anymore.
It also gave me the sense it was aimed at people younger than me, specifically teenagers and twentysomethings.

The day after I saw this I saw "Diary of a wimpy kid" which is aimed at people significantly younger than me yet I didn't have any problem connecting with the film at all.

I saw this last night, loved it but have to say its a very niche film.

I think you would need to be a bit of a geek into games and comics to er "get" alot of it (for want of a better word).

Perhaps it also helps to be an Edgar Wright fan. I think if people dont get the humour in this they might not have really liked Spaced either.

Overall the biggest problem with the film is the two leaRAB as others have said they arent that likeable.

I went to see this with my two geeky mates and us three really liked it...i also took my girlfriend along and she didnt like it at all!

Basically if your a geek, its a film for you.

Just watched it as it was having it's last showing at my local cineworld.

I thought it was a pile of shyte to be honest. And about time Cera made a film other then boy meets girl!
