Scariest films

The one that really sticks in my mind is seeing the first Halloween when I was about 13 and we got my mates older brother to rent it for us. My mates mum and dad had gone out and we all went round to watch it and it was terrifying. I know 13 year old girls are a bit overdramatic at the best of times but we ended up with 5 of us all in a bed together with the door barracaded. Still never been able to watch it since.

My son hates "It" as well... he watched it when he was quite young and then attended a birthday party with a CLOWN!!! He wouldn't go near the clown and really cried bless him, lol

"What lies beneath" was my free Fox DVD, i have an idea for a film but can't give details for it to be ripped off by some unscrupleless charactor. i sh1t my self writing it. :D :)

What about 'The Entity' ,scared the hell out of me,even more so when i realised it was based on a true story and the woman still suffered attacks today.........spinechilling!.

the haunting was good too as Skysurfer2000 mentioned.

You should go see the play.
That had me turning on every light in the house for weeks.
The made for tv version was also creepy, but I'd seen the play first.
When she comes flying in through the window... I had to turn away at that point.

The Exorcist 3 is not nearly as scary as the book (films rarely are).

I think the scariest horror movie I have seen is "Hellraiser", possibly followed by Event Horizon.

Ive still never managed to find a film that i thought was in the slightest bit scary, after reading this thread i will probably have a look out for the ring to see if that does the job :-)

I agree - I hate clowns.

They aren't funny - they are just sinister and evil looking.

And top of my list of people to hit with a baseball bat would be Ronald McDonald! :D

I've never read the book from which The Exorcist 3 adaptation screen was done, it is called 'Legion' correct?

However, The Exorcist 3 was pretty poor, hardly any scares and the flow of the movie was pretty incoherent. Should have been really scary, but it just wasn't executed properly.

I understand a prequel for the Exorcist movies entitled Exorcist: The Beginning is in the pipe works. The story goes back to Father Merrin's first encounter with the Demon Pzuzu, should be interesting stuff if and when it comes to fruition.

Don't laugh but the first time I saw the cartoon of "Watership Down", I was terrified! Bear in mind that I was quite young at the time. It's really quite a dark film.

Incidentally, it was on one of the cable channels recently... Didn't seem so scary that time, so I watched something else.

Ronald McDonald does look particularly evil i think, its the red hair and the facepaint. euugh.

Just remembered the scariest film i've ever seen, Event Horizon.

Pretty disturbing. Actually, can i even class it as the scariest film ive *seen* ? I havent seen the end yet i had to switch off!!:o

Thats nothing to laugh at, when you're a kid really strange things can scare you. The first time I saw Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, those fat dwarfy things terrified the life out of me and those singing midgets in The Wizard of Oz really freaked me out for years. (Still do a bit now).

Yeah, it was called Legion. Very cleverly written. The way it was written, the main bad guy could have been possessed, or he could simply have been suffering from a severe mental disease. It is never entirely clear which is true..

I've seen it countless times over the years, but Halloween still gets to me. It's a classic. Ring (as already pointed out) is also v. scary, especially when Sadako climbs out of the well and through the tv screen.
Another Japanese film called 'Freezer' has one of the most disturbing horror scenes i've ever seen, involving a foot and cheese wire, it was plain nasty.

Lmao!! dont worry you're not alone - i had nightmares after seeing Watership Down. i was only about 6 at the time but it really made me cack my pants.

I also think that Stephen King's 'IT' was quite scary - but i hate clowns anyway......they're evil!!!

That's precisely the point....The Exorcist is a film. Made for the cinema. It neeRAB to be seen in the medium for which it was made.

Belive me, when the first time you see The Exorcist is in a 3/4 empty, cold, ramshackle cinema in Loughborough in 1980(..sorry Curzon, no offence..) it is the scariest thing you have ever seen in your life. No other film comes even close.

I bought it on VHS in the early 80's - before the "video nasties" ban, so it was a prized possession during the years it was banned from TV/Video, but I can assure you it is not the same on the small screen. I saw it a couple of years ago in a multiplex full of cynical teenagers, and once again my heart was pounding and my mind racing with genuine fear, not transient pseudo fear that most horror films induce.

See it at the cinema when you get a chance. Preferably on a Tuesday afternoon when there's hardly anyone else in with you.
;-)

Have seen most of the films mentioned here must agree a lot of them were scary in their time(Iam a big horror fan and have seen most of these when they were first released at the flicks and a lot of them lose there power when transferred to the small screen) but may not hold up to todays audience said in a thread I think it was on this board that the one that scared me was a TV special back in the 70s about Sweeny Todd. All thou not a horror movie there is one scene in Dragonfly that got me made the wife jump Too:D

But the ultimate horror vid has got to be my first wedding video:D :D
