Scariest films

s.castle: The book sounRAB very interesting, might have to get myself a copy sometime. I know that William Peter Blatty was eager to helm the big screen adaptation, it's such a shame that his movie making skills aren't as sharp as his writing skills.

Bit of trivia for you, did you know that John Carpenter was originally set to direct Exorcist 3, but then he saw how eager Blatty was to translate his own work to the screen and so Carpenter backed out of the project. Would have been interesting to see John Carpenters vision of the movie though!

Anyway, yeh The Legion thing, during the original Exorcist movie and book when Reagan is going for scans of her brain, the doctors give the possibility that she had a legion in her brain hence the reason behind her abnormal behaviour.

Pretty clever play on the concept their by Blatty legion as in a malady within the brain or legion as in to have a group of followers. In this instance legion of the devil.....ooooh spooky!:D

Melanie: yeh I agree the first Halloween movie is a real tour de force in horror, Michael Myers is so scary, and the way that movie has been executed is brilliant, once in a lifetime kind of horror movie so to speak.

Agree also about Sadako I just wasn't expecting that to happen at the end, but she is so creepy, the way she climbs out that well and lurches her way towarRAB the TV screen geniunely eerie!

However, if you want to see something genuinely disturbing then check out a movie called Sleepaway Camp (aka Nightmare Vacation). It's just a run of the mill slasher movie from the 1980s, however, the ending, will seriously freak you out it is probably the most disturbing and chilling ending that you can imagine in a horror movie. Be warned though don't watch it alone, that ending will seriously mess with your head, you won't know whether to laugh or shudder.

I saw it recently at the cinema, and everyone in there was laughing. It was terrible. It wasn't scary, it was lame.

Takes more to scare us these days you know :)

The only film to give me nightmares as an adult! The critic who introduced it on Film Four promised it would scare the shit out of me. He was right. If you have never seen this film hurry up because Hollywood has remade it and that is going to be a major spoiler. No matter how well they do it they will never match the original.

:( :( :(

Would have been interesting... Probably a bit more gory.

I agree about Halloween. Epsecially the music (it is somehow disturbing, but adRAB to the atmosphere). John Carpenter's The Thing is also good, but not really scary, just gory.

clowns freak me out too. i just dont like their smile, and eyes .....well basically everything about them, they always look like they have a hidden agenda (sorry to any clown people out there).

Did anyone find 'Signs' kinda scary??? it really freaked me out. i couldnt sleep the night that i saw it - i had to keep my light on all night!!!! ...i know...i'm a wuss.

No, its not scary....

Its become cult comedy...

Could you really imagine the dark lord satan saying

"Do you know what she did, your cun*y daughter"
hahaha

Eraserhead

I think it was the first out of the David Lynch stables

Not so much scary as in frightening, more like, how did this guy get the ideas and then persuade people to work on it, mind you its not something I would easily sit down and watch again

The original is actually rather chilling....
Its what you don't see rather than what you do...

think Alien or Alien Resurrection

Alien - scary atmosphere
Alien Resurrection - scary that the piece of trash got made

Yeh maybe John Carpenters vision of Exorcist 3 might have been more gory, however, most importantly, I think it would have been more suspenseful and bone chilling.

Although by the time Exorcist 3 was made Carpenter was very much past his best catalogue of work. The 1990s was a poor decade for Carpenter in terms of movie output, oh well.

Yeh the music for Halloween is great it really creates the mood of the movie, best thing though is the photography and camera work, it is amazing. One of them movies that really brings out the best in the Widescreen format.

The Thing is a great movie as well, was critically panned upon it's initial big screen release back in 1982 but over the years it really has gained cult status amongst certain movie fans.

Alien Abduction walks a very thin line. There are times when it is buttock-clenchingly frightening to buttock-clenchingly... well, buttocks. Quite enjoyed it.
American Werewolf In London scared the wotsit out of me when I was 11. Still does. Just avoid the sequel.
Creepshow. The cockroaches exploding out of that guy's body (shivers).
Blair Witch also had it's moments.

The Sentinel (Little known "Keeper of the keys to the gates of hell & woman in peril" movie. scared the bejaesus outta me when i was a wee video nasty viewer).

The Omen (only the first one - 2 & 3 wern`t so hot)

The keep (nasty nazi`s get their comeuppance!)

Dawn of the dead (Still the best of Romero`s 3 zombie movies)

Jacobs Ladder (ok-not strictly horror...but some of the imagery really got to me on first viewing!)

Angelheart (Mickey Roakes Finest 1 1/2 hrs)

Demons (Italian Horror at it`s best...)

Event Horizon (has enough jump outta yer seat moments to qualify)

Cellar Dweller (ok..straight to video fodder...but Russ Tamblyn is good in it)

Invasion of the bodysnatchers (all the versions i`ve seen have their moments...but it all boils down to one thing-paranoia!)

================================================

Many more truely horrible movies in my memory - but those are my top ten for now.

I agree Peej

Re the original Exorcist - i saw it recently on video at a friend's house and minus the very bad effects/video disturbance, or maybe even because of it... there was something genuinely very creepy about it... knowing that three (i think) people died on set, or pretty soon after it kind of adRAB to the enigma

The original Alien film also has something pretty special that could never be matched by any of its sequals no matter how big the budget/status of its cast

Poltergiest, The Thing, Evil Dead, The Exorcist and also some of those Hammer House of Horror programmes gave me the creeps. (i was only young then)

IMO the best horror films came out in the late 70,s up to the mid 80's. They don't seem to make them like they used to.

A few people mention "The Ring" (original version). haven't seen this yet, but The Ring and The Ring 2 are on Film Four this month. I will have to check them out. (the new version is crap)

Totally avoid horror films after watching 'Friday the 13th', a film about zombies and Salem's Lot - after this little lot discovered I didn't sleep very well after watching them.

The film that has had me on edge lately was 'What Lies Beneath', nothing horrible ever happened but you kept thinking something was going to jump out.

Sticking to 15's from now on.:)

The Ring(original version) is very unsettling. It works even better on the small screen! The sequal is not quite as good, but different. Both well worth a watch.

I've also seen the remake, and it's pretty good as remakes go.
