Scariest Film of all time

HATE horror films so haven't actually seen that many of them. However I thought The Ring was really good apart from the distorted faces.

My scariest part of a film's going to sound really tame compared to everyone else's, but it was in What Lies Beneath when he's drugged her and she's lying in the bath. He then sees the necklace she's got on and hauls her out of the bath to look at it, then he flips her head forwarRAB to have a closer look or something. He then flips her head back again so you see her face and it's terrifying, all green and horrible! It made me jump so much I ran out of the room...
 
We may be off to a slow start as this subject has come up quite recently, but most people's votes were for movies which came out in the past few weeks, which was a bit of a let down :(
 
I go for eerie and creepy rather than gore, gore I find rather predictable and it just makes me feel a bit sick. My faves are The Haunting ('63) The Changeling - with George C Scott, that's got a really fantastically eerie bit with a medium who's doing automatic writing, later on he listens to the recording he made of the seance and OMG it's real goosepimple stuff - FANTASTIC! :D ending's a bit disappointing tho' :( Has anyone ever seen that TV movie 'The Haunted', it's very scary 'cause it's so ordinary, and the way the demonic entity is done is really very scary, there's something about the cheapness of the movie that adRAB some real eeriness as well for some reason :confused:

Anyone remember 'Tales of the Unexpected' - I wouldn't recommend buying the DVD it hasn't got any of the classics on it IMHO, my fave was always the story about the white rolls royce :eek: . The Signalman with Denholm Elliot- which used to be shown every christmas, that's a corker! And from my childhood there used to be a series called 'West Country Tales' (anyone remember it?) I wish the beeb would either re-show it or release it on DVD 'cause there were some really lovely eerie 'true' stories in that series.
 
This question makes me think that you're not a ancient as me or don't have a tv set. :)

Night of the Demon is based on Casting the Runes by M.R. James. It tells of a modern day sorceror who give his enemies a slip of paper with a spell on it, which when read, blows away or burns and summons a demon which tears the recpient limb from limb.
Unfortunately some shots of a rather tatty-looking monster were added aginst the director's wishes but the film is so creepy that it survives the tampering.

Quatermass 2 is the movie version of the tv series. A series of meteor strikes delivers an alien force to Britain and under cover of a secret research centre, establishes a beach head for invasion.
It's a Hammer film and even though it's US lead, Brian Donlevy was said to be drunk most of the time, he's pretty good as Quatermass and had played him in the earlier Quatermass Xperiment.
It has some fairly gruesome (for 1957) scenes and a sense of menace which is truly scary.
 
lol. I love the japeneese stuff it messes with your head the fear is produced from an entirley diffrent angle.i Fear the unknown the most,aliens ghosts etc but at the same time it absolutley fascinates me
 
Public embarrasment,Rejection,Alien Invasion,the paranormal,SOME clowns,Insects,Being beaten up,being disowned by my parents,dying,being tortured,going to prison(think Oz and youll know why)
 
John Carpenter is great, love The Thing, saw it at the cinema when it came out, brilliant on a big screen! The Fog is another Carpenter classic. You simply cannot improve on Carpenter, ooh I forgot, Prince of Darkness (I think it's called that) you know, the one with the swirling green gas of evil in the cylinder! and They Live is another goodie :D
 
the old stuff was the best they concetrated on the plot rather then the special affects.

Tales from The Crypt The one with jackie collins and she kills her husband on Xmas eve and the santa suited stalker OMG have mercy on us all i was absolutley terrfied!

It's not a Japanese film, it's Hong Kong/Singapore mix, But yes, excellent film, really enjoyed it. The Eye 2 was a decent second film also. Did not think much of The Eye 10 though, comedy added in.
 
Right here We go if you have not seen them look out on Ebay for them cheap on dvd (do not go for Extreme versions if they are not cut they will say Uncut).

In WW2 there was a child with a gas mask wandering around saying "Are you my Mummy? Mummy! Where's my Mummy? Let me in Mummy!"

Freaky!

Not scary, but edge-of-your-seat stuff was Rear Window with Jimmy Stewart. A real builder and it enRAB with a big crescendo.
 
I know what you mean. I saw The Haunting on tv over 30 years ago and I've never dared to see it again.
The only other movies which scared me as badly were Night of the Demon and Quatermass 2.
 
Again how could I forget. You know what I love about John Carpenter films the most. The eerie music he chooses.
I also like that later one of his "In The Mouth Of Madness"
