Rock 'n' Chips - Only Fools and Horses Prequel

Writing this as a screenwriter -- I was very disappointed with the writing. I only managed an hour.
As soon as it started I sensed this was going to fail. The character entrances did not tell us much about their persona and what they do.

Del is a wheeler-dealer type character, so why not show it in its infancy? The kid who played him was very good and deserved more to show off his obvious talent.
It's the same for the other characters, I don't know who they are except that they are trading on OFAH names. SHOW US.

The story was supposed to be about JOAN, but I couldn't really understand why we were following her. What was so great about her? I didn't get that unique perspective of her character, just someone who was struggling in a marriage.

I was more interested in DEL and his antics, in my opinion, that was where the story was, it was more fun spending time with him. I think the relationship between Del and his mother was the better story, two characters who stand by each other.

Freddy the frog was hardly intimidating, it was Rodney wearing a 'tache.

Disappointed Sullivan fan.

we watched this tonight and i can quite honestly say that it was one of the best BBC comedy dramas in recent years - very well acted from all involved and a brilliant script from John Sullivan and this for me tops the Green Green Grass - i really hope the BBC commission either a full series, or a few specials and then they could end it at the point where OFAH would have started.

Apparently the mother was a Charlton fan but she did also say she knew nothing about football.

Also, there was a tube station - but there is no tube in Peckham.

I loved it though. Is it going to be a series?

I wonder how old Del Boy is meant to be in 1960. In the final episode of OFAH in 2003 Sid points to a pic of Del in July 1960 and says "About 15" then Rodney requotes that age later on when showing Cassnadra a pic. But Del may have not been exactly 15 as he may have been just coming up to 15. In the 1991 episode "The Class Of 62" Del says he left school in 1962 which would make him born about 1946 or 1947.

i agree with you about the terrible title, schofield. the logical title would be an earlier line in the theme song for only fools, 'brother, i'm your man' if i knew sullivan i would have suggested that.

Thanks for that....................but Im confused as to why John Sullivan was happy with the old episode where Del sells that young girls baby to Boycie and Marlene. I've always felt uneasy about that episode as it was just not Del's character to be so hearltess for a quick buck.

I really liked it too.
I found it really engaging - and these days the TV hardly seems to do that for me - there is little that can keep my eyes away from the PC screen for so long at a time.

Like people said, it was about Joan, and Freddie the Frog, not really about Del Boy - blimey, we had 14 series about Del Boy LOL - give his old dear a chance.

I liked seeing Grandad as a younger man, and that was a good choice of casting too.

I would like to see another episode at least - that shows what happened when Del's dad leaves, and up to when Joan dies. I think that could help to really set the scene for Del and grandad becoming responsible for Rodders, and would allow us to get to see some of the character development of the likes of Boyce and Trigger etc.

I certainly was not disappointed though.

I really enjoyed it , thought James Buckley was brilliant as dell!

Great end scene as well with the baby, similar to when Del was there.
