I am an existing customer of Bev and have been for 3 years now on the West Coast.

I am moving into a new house and getting my 6100 installed for free by Bev (installing 3 other SD receivers myself) and when I called to get the move done I inquired about renting a 9200 receiver. Well.. customer support said it would cost $125 (or so) for the install for the rental equipment and some amount for a deposit(can't remember).

I told her I could just install it myself, she said they can't let me do that. So I asked if they could send it along with the installer (Oct 5th) when I get my other equipment all hooked up in my new house by the installer, they won't do that either. She said it would have to be another install time.

I want the HD PVR but the price I think is high for an install. Honestly for the time I have been with them they should do it for free. I don't want to purchase the 9200 for fear of Mpeg4 coming out soon.

In any case.. any advice for me on this? Bev is starting to seriously piss me off.

Very interesting........

Free Rental Installations in Quebec, yet the rest of Canada PAYS....Hmmmmm

Like I said they still try to charge Quebecers (and mostly succeed) but they are not legally allowed to do so.

It falls under the same restrictions as someone who would sell a brand new car for $5 but only if you buy a $20,000 coffee cup first (example stretched for emphasis!). In Qu

I have been with EV about 4 years and bought 3 3100's and 2 6100's. I just called to rent a 9200 for the same fears as you. I got them to waive the $75.00 (price in my area) because I was "A Good Customer". This includes a new dual dish as well - Rental is $20.00 per month. This is not normal for them but if you squeak and growl a little they can waive all those charges like they did for me. Of course I had to give my credit card as a deposit which they are to credit - I will keep an eye on those bills!

Call back and tell them you are a good customer, yada-yada and tell them they waived the install for a "friend" of yours.
Good Luck

N/W/S the good advice about getting the rental receiver installation fee waived, if you can't talk your way into getting the installation charge waived, what happens to existing HD customers (that therefore already HAVE the dual sat dish/switches), such that the installer doesn't actually do anything but plug the rental in - would such a customer at least be entitled to the dish/switches for the $125 charge they're stuck with?

Not officially. That said I know not all Dish's and Sw44's etc come back into our warehouse, are they left with the customer, I do not know.

DO the installers sell them privately, yep, thats my guess.......

Actually $125 should be the standard Price for the 9200 Rental Installation.

It will come with a New Dish and an SW44, so if you think about it, you end up with these 2 items even if you send the 9200 back in a year.....

There is NO reason for BOTH the Move and the New Rental to be done together, call again, quote your Move Order Number, should start OMC or OMX then 6 digits, ask them to create another order for the Rental 9200 Installation.

You are also entitled to have the Tuner 2 Output run to another location in the house all for the $125.

I threatened to cancel recently and was given a free 9200 for a year and free installation. I paid $100 on my credit card and was credited back on my first bill (Which is well over $100 every month so it wasn't a problem. It actually worked out nice because I got free points on my credit card!).

They also lowered my monthly bill by approx. $50 and gave me additional features I didn't already have.

All in all a very worth while 40 minute phone call. My wife and I are addicted to the PVR!

Another Quebec zinger... in the rest of Canada when you sign up for deferred payment or zero interest equal payments at your local department store they charge you an administration fee. That's illegal in Quebec.

Yes, I understand that they give you a switch.. etc but still I am paying for the service and have been with Bev for a while now. I think it should be all about customer loyalty rewards. (aka give me a break once in while).

I feel its nickel and dimes compared to what the service costs in the long run.

And yes, there is a reason for the move and the new install to be done together. Its saves the installer coming out a second time and saves my time as well. There is no reason for it NOT to be done together other then BEV being a pain in the ass. Since I give them a deposit for the gear anyways I should be able to do the damn install myself. Its not like they won't have my CC info.

Max, I am going to take your advice and call them up again on Monday and do some more complaining.

Nimiq the 1'st - I thought the CSR said something about $75.00 which I then assumed (open for jokes word) that was possibly the standard rate for the upgrade.......ooops, mine was an upgrade - sixpac's case is a move - Is that where I strayed off the path?

sixpac, I still think you should be able to get something out of them. Stay on 'em and good luck!

Next.....Quebec will be exempt the GST

That's when I will move there and maybe cheer for The Habs :^)

To upgrade to a 9200 it will cost you:

100$ rental certificate taken on a credit card that the will charge you on the day you place the order (this will later on be credited on your Express Vu account)

125$ installation charge that would be charged on your Express Vu bill

75$ is the installation cost of a single tuner receiver...there is a 50$ extra for the second tuner

There you go Maxwedge, Agent has spelled it out, perfectly.

Maxwedge, you already HAVE HD reception and therefore according to Express Vu, the way they tell us anyway, you should be paying $125 for your installation, if you are getting it for $75, you have either got yourself a deal or you will see a charge of $125 on your bill. I hope you got a deal.

Sixpac, Express Vu has never allowed a Customer to install their own Rental equipment. There was a Bell World Store or two that for a couple of weeks many months ago now that gave out Receivers to Rental Customers to do their own installations and that was stopped very quickly.

Existing Customers very rarely get any kind of a break, its all about getting new customers on board.

It is getting pretty close for some people when you look at the costs for Renting a 9200 Vs Buying one;

Renting
Receiver Cost $0
Installation $125
Rental Certificate $100 Refunded
Rent over 1 year $240

Totals $465
Less Refund $365

Buying
Receiver Cost $599
Installation $0
Rental Certificate $0
Rent over 1 year $0

Totals $599
Less Refund $0

If you then return the 9200 at the end of the year you have paid $365 and now have NOTHING. If you bought it, OK you paid $599 but you still have a Dual Tuner HD PVR.....

It will be an HD Dual Tuner PVR for another 2 years at least, then you will still have an SD Dual Tuner PVR. The 5200 was $599, the 9200 is $599.

BUY the 9200, enjoy it for years to come.

All the talk about MPEG4 is making people paranoid;

MPEG4 receivers will most likely launch in October.

MPEG4 receivers will receive MPEG2 signals in October.

MPEG4 transmissions should start in 2008 but will be in test mode until ALL MPEG2 HD receivers are swapped out.

Swap out of ALL MPEG2 receivers will most likely take until well into 2008 most likely 2009. And even when ALL MPEG2 receivers are gone, the transmission of HD will still be in MPEG2 and will be decoded as normal by the MPEG4 receivers.

I do not see all ALL MPEG4 HD transmission until 2009, with the launch of Nimiq 5.

I would also not be surprised to see Express Vu take ALL the old 9200's and 942's from the States and re-brand them and sell them as Dual Tuner SD PVR's........

Just move as is (with the 6100.) Then call to rent a 9200. Chances are you will get free installation (with a 1 year commitment.) If they still want to charge for installation. Tell them you would rather cancel service. That will get you an offer from the retention department. (Probably 3 months free service plus free installation.)

Consumer protection laws are much more powerful here in Quebec. Another example is our price-at-the-register law, where if the item scans at the register higher than the price labelled (either on the product or on the store shelf) then you get:

-The item free if it is worth $10 or less
-$10 off an item worth more than $10

That fixed some stores who routinely screwed customers by leaving sale prices on store shelves for weeks or even months (I'm looking at you, Maxi) after the sale was over.

Of course, the price guarantee doesn't work if there is a price floor set by law (i.e. milk, cigarettes, etc..)

Hmm.. interesting stuff.. I'm a new resident of la belle province (4 mois), where could I verify this information about no installation charges on rental equipment and the if the price is higher at the register thing??

...and that's $10 off the lowest price ;)

The Office de la Protection du Consommateur manages the consumer protection laws, even though they're pretty useless once you have a complaint. If you get screwed, you're better off saving some time and going directly to small claims court, that's where the Office will send you eventually anyway.
