Rebirth of the Rebellion - Code Geass R2 Talkback (SPOILERS)

Thin line, but I don't think anyone's bashing the Japanese. Second that happens then we're the ones being racist. However, Geass does lead to some rather deep discussions that don't benefit from sugarcoating the issues.

No, he just shove "I am gundam" down our throats...

Oh, I forgot. Nothing wrong with have a villain thats evil just because he enjoys killing people. Thats right, villains don't need to be any deeper than generic killers.

At least the emperor has a warped philosophy he is following. Even he manges to be a little deeper than 1) I want to rule the world because I'm full of myself and 2) I just like fighting and killing people.

The top right has Japanese characters, I assume it was some magazine scan. I can't speak to the "I will be risen" part though. I'd just as soon not have text in the way of that awesome art, but it's still pretty great. I'm just now discovering the joy of browsing scans.

In general, I'm not a big fan of Geass' characters. I find them to be inconsistent, much like the show itself. Whilst the apparent death of Nunnally is a shock, I never really considered her a character. Like most females in the show, her job was just to pout when she was concerned about the men in her life and basically be a prop for Lelouch and Suzaku to fight over. Even the concept of destruction and death on a massive scale doesn't mean much after the whole Euphie incident.
I'm not trying to troll the thread. But for me, most of the characters are far from memorable or even likeable. When everyone else was pissed over what Rolo did, I was happy because I honestly couldn't stand Shirley. I've commented before on how I feel Geass is trying to play to too many audiences at once and she was part of that. Lelouch and Suzaku are very interesting characters to explore, especially when the show pushes them to dark places instead of taking it safe and tame. But the rest of the cast...I just have no real concern for them because I feel they've been handled poorly and will be dumped as soon as Sunrise/Bandai can no longer merchandise them. Same reason I keep comparing the show to Destiny. I have legititimate grievances which link both and I'd rather not be branded as some hypocritical fanboy looking for flimsy excuses simply because I'm not going "ZOMG Geass is teh awsum!!"

I think Kallen sturabled at the end. I think as soon as the Black Knights betrayed Lelouch, she was pretty much relegated to being part of the rabble. A shame, especially since early on she was keen to be part of Lelouch's inner circle. She stuck up for him afterwarRAB but generally she was just another character who was kept out of Lelouch's trinity of himself, Suzaku and CC.

Speaking of Suzaku...hmm. I still think that it's a mess how ultimately his Knight of RounRAB sub plot went no where by invalidating Charles' reign at the final stage. One thing that does stick with me is that ironically, Lelouch put Suzaku in the situation that in the previous finale he fought against- Suzaku killing him and the former then taking care of Nunnally. I think Suzaku has been pretty one note this season, constantly brooding. However, I do appreciate that his alliance with Lelouch was handled better than going the SEED route of 'BBFF!!'. They teased us that that would happen but ultimately an alliance of convenience is probably more true to the relationship of those two characters.

Didn't Suzaku start attending their school in the fifth episode of the first season? Judging by the preview, this happens again in the next episode. If this keeps up, the last two episodes are going to cliffhang worse than last season

I like to think he would've done the opposite. That would've been the humane thing to do, and frankly given what happened with Shirley I think having more wild carRAB with Geass running around is the last thing that LeLouch would ever possibly want.

So Suzaku and Lulu aren't at each others throats yet?
*still waiting for the sub episode to finish*

at least they appeared civil towarRAB each other. Although maybe he doesn't have enough evidence to prove that Lulu has regained his memories and hence must act kind towarRAB him. But if he knows for a fact Zero is back he must know for a fact that his memories are too.

Hellcat: Don't you think there can be legitimate disagreements with those grievances and also with your personal tastes, to a greater or lesser extent? You don't need to agree with what others say, but the opposite is also true.

Still, I don't think most of the cast is that memorable either and several could have been handled much better, that's a good point, but I never really hated Shirley for example, and among the rest some have been treated better or worse than others. Nunnally doesn't have much of an independent role so far, beyond her accepting to be a Governor and following Euphie's ideals , but her current value lies in her connection to Lelouch and what he thinks about her, one way or another. That's been fairly consistent. What happens afterwarRAB, I wouldn't know.

I also don't see such a direct connection between merchandising and character death, if that's what you're implying. Even if it may be a factor, right now there is nothing indicating it is the main or even the only one. Euphie was apparently fairly popular and you could argue that Shirley's stock was never zero yet has risen posthumously, going by the limited indications one can find online.

Yea I just see them as bridge bunnies ala the trio from the original Macross which has then been done in every other Macross which features a capital ship.

They will probably exist to make little comments about things from time to time, talk about trying to find a boyfriend and clothes and other inane things.

I think the issue you're talking about may take a little longer to resolve though, unless it's simply part of the things that haven't been spoiled yet, precisely because it's so important and may need "breathing room".

Yes, even in Code Geass, sometimes you can't do everything at once.

Maybe one or two teasing revelations or comments may slip through, I guess.

Thanks =)!

One of the weak points that I think dissapoints me the most is that a lot of characters are being sidelined.

I mean, one of the things that made Kallen was the fact that she wasn't just your average character, she was struggling between her 2 identities, 1 being Britannian and the other Japanese, now it seems as though we have lost a good portion of her character for the fighting aspects. While I realize this is a war they are going on with, I think Sunrise did a good job in mixing the fighting and the character elements so that there could be enough of both, I think they need to realize that again this season.

Another character is C.C. she also had a large conflict, she didn't have trust in anyone, from being tortured, etc, and then Lelouch came along, I think the writers just need to pick 1 female for Lelouch to go after, and for me I'd like it to be C.C. they just seem to have the largest connection, which goes even into the deeper parts of their subconcious minRAB, I'm not sure there can be a bigger connection in a relationship.

On the other hand, we also have a lot of new characters to develop. While the Tianzi didn't get a ton of connection, I felt they did a pretty good job illustrating her into the story and making the viewer feel for her. Xingke was also done nicely, if to a lesser extent, but still I suspect to see more from him, I'd also like more from the female who the Enuchs had tied up during the China fight.

Then we have the Knights of RounRAB, assuming there are 12, though there may not, that is quite a bit to develop. Gino and Anya have been present the most, and I still feel in the dark about their characters, I'd like to think there is more to Gino than just being silly. And i am assuming we will get some developments on Anya, they can't have a weird connection with C.C. and then leave it blank, well, they could, but I wouldn't approve.

Who else, oh, the other Royals. I like Schneizel a great deal, but I wish we could go deeper into his character, I mean, we know he is smooth, intelligent and good at dealing with warfare, and even leaders, but eh, I just feel there is something we are missing in his character.

And I am dissapointed in the lack of creativity on Sunrise's part, the 5th Queen couldn't get anymore stereotypical. I don't even want to count how many times the younger one always turns out to be blood thursty, I don't know, she just seems like she will be more annoying than likeable.

Oh, and probably my biggest problem of all, ROLO! We need more development in his department, hopefully with Ashford leaving the picture he will join Lelouch and we'll get just that, hopefully.

But yeah, that is honestly probably my only major complaint about Code Geass, which is pretty big actually. The fanservice is very meh, I don't think it is needed, but hey, it's not like everything falls apart because of it.

1) This isn't a space oprea. Aleast in a space oprea they can have some effect on the story. Code Geass is very focused on Lelouch. Its never been a space opera. But thats what make shirly's death meaningful. It will have a profound effect on Lelouch.

2) Lelouch always lamented that he was living a lie. He acted like a normal kid a school (a normal rich kid ) while in truth he was an exiled prince looking for revenge. Shirly represented a life Lelouch could never have, a normal life. So even though I dobut he really loved her, shirly's death has an impact because it shatters that vision of a normal life in the same way Euphie's death did. And just like after Euphie's death, Lelouch is going to snap.

Prepare for evil Lelouch to return in full force next episode.

They definitely threw around the 'Suzaku and Lelouch MIGHT team up' hints in our faces. I mean, PHW and I often talked about how we desperately wanted them to join forces, even if it ended up being in hell. I think despite the fact that at some point it would probably come true, it was never really the type of 'team up' I my self imagined because personally I figured that they would go the BFF! rout and leave us with Lelouch and Suzaku tied at the hip. I'm actually pleased now that I've seen how they switched that normal kind of cliche around, for although Suzaku started working with Lelouch later on, their frienRABhip was never the focus of their actions and neither of them acted like their bonding was of the utmost priority. It felt like Suzaku stayed with Lelouch almost begrudgingly while Lelouch, wanting to mend the past, didn't make 'being frienRAB' with Suzaku more important than his current task at hand. What makes me satisfied is that finally in the end, Lelouch still tells Suzaku that becoming Zero will be his punishment, and although I think they've both been able to mend their relationship by then (Suzaku crying for one thing), their 'team up' wasn't over done or used to shadow the rest of the plot. They didn't suddenly switch to sparklingsunshine mode and kept it grounded since there was no way for either of them to have completely forgiven the other right off the bat.
The only complaint I have about Suzaku pre-teamup is his overall whiny, brooding, 'I should die for my psuedo-sins', bastard attitude. As of the last few episodes however, I got the impression that he had kind of shrugged off some of that annoying weight he was needlessly carrying and redeemed himself quite alot. By the end of episode 25 I came to...dare I say it.. LIKE his character. (odd after all the b*tching I did about him). I had forgotten about all his negative aspects because I seriously enjoyed him working with Lelouch. Suzaku is now getting his own punishment, and while he still sometimes pisses me off, if Lelouch had enough trust in him to hand over the Zero mask, I suppose he can't be all that bad. *claps*
