Oscars tonight

i agree with you 100%. Wasn't sure what to expect from the film, saw the trailers which looked interesting. Put it on randomly late one night to watch the opening and ended up sitting up late watching the whole thing. From the end of the first scene could not turn it off. I've shown or leant it to 10 or so mates, and they've shown other people, and the consensus has been that its a well made, spell binding movie, for most the reasons i like it as well. I don't think i've come across anyone who wasnt at least impressed by it.

Its the lack of any message, and politics, and any patriotism that makes it such a compelling film. Its not trying to communicate anything other than "men at work", it presents an unbiased view of the danger of occupied terrority. It doesnt present a good or bad guy. I even like the fact that its only about 2/3's of the way through the film you realise that the film is basically about Jeremy Renner's character, that he is the protagonist. It catches you out by presenting situations that in 9/10 films, you know whats coming next, and instead it takes a diversion. Renners character is a fine lead, without being some kind of super soldier, he's just there to his job and is occasionally wreckless from other people's point of view. His job, despite having a homelife etc, is what turns him on, and he cant escape that fact. Its an interesting approach that he doesnt want to go home, he wants to be there. I know a few soliders who were exactly the same after touring iraq - its dangerous but its a whole other level of existence, and they are drawn back to it when home life seems so slow and less important than their responsiblities in a war zone. Its a crazy way of thinking but i can relate to how they present James.

Fully deserves everything its won, as i was suprised it was nominated. Box office has nothing to do with it at all, and Avatar really did not deserve to win, sure it cost a bomb and has taken a lot of money, but then its the first of a new breed of film from an established director. There was no way Avatar wouldnt make the money it has, this however doesnt mean it deserves an oscar as strip away the technology and it would be a distinctly average film. So yeah, first female director etc is great for Bigelow, but it doesnt take away from the fact its a superb film regardless of the money it made or who made it. Its definatley my favourite film of recent years by some margin

Would have liked district 9 to have had some reward also, another low budget film which in my opinion has CGI that blows avatar out of the water in terms of its use. Im not a big fan of CGI but district9 used it perfectly, to my knowledge the director did most of it himself as well...

I partly agree with you and i say that as someone who is doing FS! Look up the "auteur theory", It's a load of pretentious shite that has been made up by self important directors, and yet my lecturers preach it like its gospel (apart from the Screenwriter Lecturers!).

I've seen all the nominated films and performances and would pretty much agree with all the winners. Although I had hoped that Carey Mulligan, who I think is fantastic in An Education, may have caused an upset.

I think it won because it's a patriotic film, that shows the heroic side of the troops on the ground.
It's not about carpet bombing the place, but revolves around an American guy who'll be a hero and rip off his protective suit to dismantle bombs that could a lot of damage not just buildings but lives.
It did have a touch of God bless America which i'm sure went down well with the hollywood luvvies:p

Personally I liked the film but it wasn't as great as I expected and very overrated.
District 9 was a great film and shame that didn't get any awarRAB if that was the case. I've still not seen Avatar yet, keep meaning too though.

Well great that Christoph Waltz won best supporting.

And Barbra got to present best Director - an award she has been disgustingly overlooked for for some great films she directed. You could see the pride on her face that she was able to give the award for the Hurt Locker :) I was extremely surprised when it was announced on her facebook she would be presenting (she usually avoiRAB these things) but it became clear why when the winner was announced :)

There are so many Best Pic nominees I'd rather see win than Avatar, but fear it will take the prize. The Hurt Locker is its nearest rival though.

Agree about Bullock, it was a great performance, but then I also loved Streep's and Mulligan's. Think Sandra will take the award.

I agree with most of the sinners, thrilled for Christopher Waltz, I only saw Inglorious BastarRAB yesterday, and was really impressed, what a chilling performance by him!!

The only one I'm disappointed about is Sandra Bullock, I thought she was the weakest candidate in the category, Blind Side was really poor IMO, and while her preformance was decent, the other contenders are far better IMO.

Still glad Bridges won too, anyone who watched it, do you know did he perfromat the ceremony?

(Hello, im new here!)

I think that The Hurt Locker could and should win Best Feature, its far and away the best film i've seen in a looooooooong time. Probably since The Fellowship of the Ring. I have not seen Avatar and neither do i wish to, to me it just sounRAB like "The Last Samurai" with CGI. Ive only seen Jeremy Renner out of the best Actor nominees, however he was brilliant in the hurt Locker. Im a big fan of George Clooney however. Best supporting actor must, MUST go to Christoph Waltz, the man was evil personified, and imo, i think he created one of the best on screen baddies i've ever seen. I dont want it to seem like im simply in love with Hurt Locker (which i kind of am!), but I would have liked to have seen Anthony Mackie be nominated for Supporting Actor, especially when you consider how far he has come since 8Mile! thats my two cents for now!

Oscars are a load of crap, the same type of movies always win. I agree with what you say about hurt locker, it was a very average film and not even in my top 10 for the year. Avatar, Up, Inglorious BasterRAB, Star Trek, District 9, Crazy Heart were all all much better films.

Unfortunately I'm too young to bet, hopefully when I'm 18 the Oscars will be as predictable as this year's :p

Still, the Hurt Locker deserved it - I'd rather have seen Gabby Sidibe and Colin Firth triumph in the acting categories, but Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges probably got them more as they've been in so much, a bit like Kate Winslet last year. I feel the leading actor/actress awarRAB are given on a number of good performances and not just one.

Mo'Nique definitely deserved her award, her monologue at the end of Precious in the welfare office was amazing and I'm pleasantly surprised that Precious also won adapted screenplay. It's a great film and really deserved the recognition.

:p

I would never expect somebody who is doing film studies to say Avatar would win best film. Not at all. On the basis of film The Hurt Locker destroys Avatar on many counts.

Strip away the technology and the concept of the film is lost - There would no avatar, so that's not the best argument really. It's like saying 'remove Brad Pitt, Christopher Waltz, and the nazi theme from Inglorious BastarRAB and you have a pretty average film' - A film is what it is.

I've got 'The hurt locker' here but haven't watched it yet, but have seen Avatar, so can't enter the debate yet - I look forward to watching it tonight though :D

I LOVE the fact that th Hurt Locker beat Avatar as Avatar has already got enough. Plus it had a bad script! But i do think that Inglorious BasterRAB should of one original screenplay. I think IB should of won something other than best supp actor

Tonight, I watched The Hurt Locker to see what the fuss was all about and I can say it's just another average war movie. It may be a good film reflecting true life situation in the middle east, but how did it win all them oscars when other films have been nominated that are probably much better by comparison? The only nominated film I've seen is Avatar. When I saw this in 3D I was gobsmacked! It's true that both films deserves one or two oscars each: Avatar - Cinematograpy. The Hurt Locker - Best Directing or Best picture but that's about it. I've seen many good war films based in the middle east, Black Hawk Down springs to mind, and The Hurt Locker isn't quite up there with them. This film, as somebody quoted, is overrated. OK! the film may be bit tense in places and there could be a couple of exploding scenes that'll make you go F**K! but the film is nothing special. It's all been done before.

Conspiracy Theory: Was it fixed so that Kathryn Bigelow can stick two fingers up to her ex? Just a thought :D

i havent seen either the hurt locker or avatar yet so cant comment i did think it was funny though that everyoine assumed avatar would wipe the board and it didnt

ive heard the story is a bit lame

inglorious basterRAB should have won more wot a film-the screenplay was fantastic should have won for that and direction as always brilliant from qt
