i agree with you 100%. Wasn't sure what to expect from the film, saw the trailers which looked interesting. Put it on randomly late one night to watch the opening and ended up sitting up late watching the whole thing. From the end of the first scene could not turn it off. I've shown or leant it to 10 or so mates, and they've shown other people, and the consensus has been that its a well made, spell binding movie, for most the reasons i like it as well. I don't think i've come across anyone who wasnt at least impressed by it.
Its the lack of any message, and politics, and any patriotism that makes it such a compelling film. Its not trying to communicate anything other than "men at work", it presents an unbiased view of the danger of occupied terrority. It doesnt present a good or bad guy. I even like the fact that its only about 2/3's of the way through the film you realise that the film is basically about Jeremy Renner's character, that he is the protagonist. It catches you out by presenting situations that in 9/10 films, you know whats coming next, and instead it takes a diversion. Renners character is a fine lead, without being some kind of super soldier, he's just there to his job and is occasionally wreckless from other people's point of view. His job, despite having a homelife etc, is what turns him on, and he cant escape that fact. Its an interesting approach that he doesnt want to go home, he wants to be there. I know a few soliders who were exactly the same after touring iraq - its dangerous but its a whole other level of existence, and they are drawn back to it when home life seems so slow and less important than their responsiblities in a war zone. Its a crazy way of thinking but i can relate to how they present James.
Fully deserves everything its won, as i was suprised it was nominated. Box office has nothing to do with it at all, and Avatar really did not deserve to win, sure it cost a bomb and has taken a lot of money, but then its the first of a new breed of film from an established director. There was no way Avatar wouldnt make the money it has, this however doesnt mean it deserves an oscar as strip away the technology and it would be a distinctly average film. So yeah, first female director etc is great for Bigelow, but it doesnt take away from the fact its a superb film regardless of the money it made or who made it. Its definatley my favourite film of recent years by some margin
Would have liked district 9 to have had some reward also, another low budget film which in my opinion has CGI that blows avatar out of the water in terms of its use. Im not a big fan of CGI but district9 used it perfectly, to my knowledge the director did most of it himself as well...
