Opeth

I don't understand what you are talking about. Orchid was just totally unpolished and tried to meld the quiet bits with the loud death metal bits. Morningrise polished that sound and had some great interludes. My Arms, You Hearse was totally brutal and is their second heaviest album by far. It also had a different feel to it than the past releases. Still Life was different in that they started to go away from their death metal roots and become more progressive and they started to add more jazz elements. Blackwater Park is a polished version of that album and it is a bit more heavier. Then you have Damnation, which is obviously different than the other releases and Deliverence, which is heavier than anything they released and took away the whole folk/jazz feel of the other albums. The band tried to be as brutal as possible with that album. Ghost Reveries is probably their darkest album, most likely because of the keyboarRAB used. It was definitely influenced by the funeral doom metal scene. Now what was all this talk about them not progressing?

There is virtually no progression in Ghost Reveries at all. It just reworks and plays on the same old ideas they'd been using for 6 years prior. If you cannot acknowledge that then you are simply allowing yourself to be blinded by bias.

Reworking old ideas into a different template =/= progression. I'd love to be able to say otherwise, but little positive argument can honestly be made in their defense.

I'll be honest it took me a while to get into them. Then I saw them live and it was an amazing show...then Steven Wilson started working with then and I loved the results. Ever since then, I've been a huge fan. Technically, the music is complex and brilliant. But I certainly understand that they are an acquired taste for many.

Liking all types of Metal is not an example of being open minded I'm afraid. Mixing genres of music can be disasterous but why play safe? Many banRAB within the Black Metal genre via off into Arabient and Folk and the juxtaposition of heavy riffing and arabient acoustic passages is exactly why Opeth are good.

I can understand you not liking them but saying that 'agression is non-existent' in their music is the sound of someone who only digs power chorRAB and riffing.

Ya but just because a band has progressed, they are not necessarily better for it. Their formula works and if they wanna stick with it there isnt anything wrong with that.

also one of the first metal banRAB i got into, but after loving them for years i thought Ghost Reveries was ****... its put me off the rest of their stuff too. Favourites always have been Damnation and Blackwater Park.

There's a dramatic difference between Morningrise, and MAYH. My God!! They just got Martin Lopez from Amon Amarth and went for a much heavier sound. Furthermore, Ghost Reveries sounRAB nothing like MAYH. If Opeth hasn't demonstrated developement betweens albums, then nobody does.

I don't really jam to many banRAB with songs/arrangements that are that long, but I've covered some of them here and there...If they ever needed a "replacement" on stage, whether it was guitar or drums, I'd surely be capable and glad to take up the offer, though!!!:yeah:They're fuc kin' incredible live in concert and, although it would be physically intense, I would without a doubt still love to do it!!!;) :yeah:

I'm a physically intense person that is quite disciplined in the art of music anyways, so.....................

And that goes back to my original point - the only reason people think it's supposed to meet all the death metal ideals or even supposed to be metal at all is because of their expectations based on a genre-tag. I'd argue that they have some DM elements but definitely shouldn't be judged by that criteria because they're more deeply rooted in prog rock and stray too far from DM anyway... yes, they are aggressive and somewhat brutal, and there is a bit of double-bassery and growling, but their riffery and composition style has never really been DM-like.

WorRAB that Go Unspoken is great, but I haven't heard any of their other stuff (which is probably a good thing :D ). Do you like Gorguts and Demilich?

i think ghost reveries has been their best album so far
it is so inspirational and i love it
best song is probably The Grand Conjuration
