Only Connect (BBC4)

9 episodes this series according to the Radio Times. 4 quarters, 2 semis, 1 3rd place play-off, 1 final and then presumably a champion of champions edition.

University Challenge and Mastermind stand accused of 'dumbing down' over the past few series, but this new BBC4 quiz is flying the flag for boffin quotient quiz shows.

Vicki Coren presents and there are two teams of three battling it out for the prize. They have to make lateral connections between seemingly unconnected people, worRAB, pieces of music etc. SounRAB dull??? Not a bit of it.

Stumbled upon it accidentally, but will be back for more next Tues. What a treat!

oops...just realised a thread on this one was 'on the go' last night, but what the hey...

147k viewers last night, which I think is down on earlier rounRAB. Maybe it's just getting too difficult? Lord alone knows what the semis and final are going to be like!

Loved the little dig one of the contestants tried to get in about how a programme might be said to have "jumped the shark" if it introduced Heiroglyphs in place of Greek letters :D

Excellent stuff as always, but did the last round go on for longer than usual (because the first wall was solved so quickly, perhaps?), hence the high scores.

I thought there were two more episodes. Next week's final (labelled as episode 8/9) and then a "playoff" between this years and last years winners. But I can't see any mention of that mystery 9th episode on RT.

Last nights episode is repeated 3 more times, just in case it doesn't make it onto iPlayer for some reason.

PS. Those connecting walls last night were fierce!

Does anyone know when that's due to be broadcast, please? I'd have expected it the following week (ie. tomorrow) but there's nothing listed in Digiguide for the next two weeks.

I caught an episode of this the other night and loved it.

I think I'm fairly intelligent, but some of the people on the programe made me feel like I had the intelligence of one of the lesser apes.

I consol myself with the fact that I managed to get one question right that neither of the teams did (something about "4 Qs in a D" being 4 quarters in a dollar) but by and large I was just staggered at how quikcly they were getting some of the answers.

I'll be watching again.

I must be one of the few people who doesn't particularly like this show. I am glad to see an intelligent program in amongst the usual rubbish that you get these days, but Only Connect is rather disappointing. Victoria Coren, in my opinion, is a very wooden host, her "jokes" are very forced and border on the cringeworthy. That's just what I think though :)
