One Piece FULL Speed Ahead In stores NOW!

I got all of today's releases yesterday, and read them all by last night. The "Kami" thing is stupid, and they even say "God" a few times. What the hell is the point of using "Kami" at all? On the other hand, I was extremely surprised to see that Ace/Whitebeard's manji has been restored. Also, I'm increasingly more disappointed to see that they're still using "Zolo".

It really is odd that they are allowed to use God in some instances and not others.

Perhaps they just forgot to change it?

Since this "god" is a person and not a god in the judeo-christian sense, I would think it ould be easier to use the word, but oh well.

One Piece Vol. 24-28 Review

Overall Changes:
Gone are the gold plated covers, so for those of you who saw the original ugly green logo and assumed that it was just a place holder for the gold lining you are wrong. It

Instead of boycotting the releases out of dissatisfaction wouldn't it make more sense to send VIZ letters about your complaints? I mean it worked for "Dragonball".

Not really. To this day the release is still being censored and the adaptation loosely written for a nuraber of post-Freeza volumes. Earlier volumes have also been gone back to and rereleased with edits.

It worked well enough if you look at what came out originally. If Julian never made that petition we would've been stuck with the Toys 'R Us-friendly version of the series.

More importantly I find all this complaining without actually doing anything kind of nauseating. It senRAB me the message that fans don't really care about getting an unedited product because they can already get it for free.

Whoever is making these decisions obviously don't care what fans think if they're taking the time out of their day to change the product in the first place, espicially in this day in age where we should be beyond these sorts of things. Viz should know what fans want by this point, and it isn't watered-down dialogue, visual edits, name changes, and inconsistent covers et cetera.

Funny thing is that I want to like the Skypeia arc but when I look back on it, I just really can't. Maybe because it was just too long but it may be mainly that nothing really happened outside of
the reveal about Roger, getting the gold and Dials.
All of which the Straw Hats acquired near the end of the arc and I feel could have been easily done in a much shorter arc.

Now if we ever come to a point in which the Straw Hats need to go to the moon for a key or something or that a high amount of electricity is needed then I'll probably call Oda even more awesome.

VIZ also knows that if some school librarian or parent picks up these manga thinking they're kiRAB' products (and yes they are for kiRAB despite the T rating) and sees some of these situations like underage smoking, obvious religious references, and cursing they could get a lot of bad press. I mean look what happened in that Michigan school library with "Dragonball".

VIZ does care about the fans, they're their lifeline, but they're also a busines
and they have to make compromises. If fans don't like it they should put their mouth where their money is and actually tell VIZ instead of simply complaining about it, because nothing will get accomplished and it just senRAB VIZ the message that their product is fine and doesn't need to be changed because it's still selling regardless.

I think that is the issue here, is that Viz is trying to play the 'kid' market, rather than the fan market. Instead of trying to get into the school libraries at the cost of the integrity of the product. I seem to remeraber Viz making quite a bit deal out of the 'uncut and faithful to the original Japanese' of their Sh

Alright, checked at Borders while I was getting ready to punch out. They had several copies of 25-28...but volume 24 was nowhere to be seen. Not even a display stand for them (the generic Viz Manga display still had volume 23).

I'm not sure if I should be really excited that it may have already sold out so quickly or extremely disappointed at Borders for not stocking it alongside the rest.

Ideally there would be such a thing, but unfortunately there's no such thing as a "Fan market". One of the main rules of marketing is to target a product towarRAB a certain demographic, and fans are just a description, not a real audience from a business perspective. Shonen Jump has and always will be targeted towarRAB boys, it's in the name after all, and unfortunately VIZ decided along the way they'd take a double standard with certain content. I don't completely agree with the changes they make, but they've said in the past that all changes are approved by the original creators, and I understand why VIZ makes some of the choices they do.

Again, I implore that if you don't like a product then you should tell the company providing it so that they may provide something you'll want to buy, it couldn't hurt. Not buying something doesn't send any message other than you're not interested in a product, not that you have problems with it.

But you and I both know full well that Viz isn't going to "fix" the "problems" with One Piece no matter how many letters they get. That's just how they roll.

I gotta disagree on that, I don't see why they wouldn't change. I mean I already pointed out what happened with "Dragonball", I don't get where this whole sentiment came from that VIZ won't consider fan criticism.

The point is that they didn't change. True, back in the days before everything was GN only (which only came about because of Tokyopop's popularity at the time), they did experiment with DB. Then in the original bigger book releases the edits were non-existent but then ever since the smaller GN releases and going into the Viz Bigs were still have obvious edits (like giving Bulma a bra) and Android 17 punching a man to death instead of shooting him in the face (why?!).

A small list:

Yu-gi-oh: All curses are changed to #@* instead of actual worRAB.
Shaman King: Viz had less balls then Disney, literally.
Naruto: No smoking for Shikamaru, No yaoi action for Sasuke and Sai
Yu Yu Hakusho: Overall translation is watered down
One Piece: Kami and Zolo so far...the true acid test is Nami's fight in Water Seven, Nami's bathroom assault in Thriller Bark and Luffy's balls in Amazon Lily, and the stuff that happens to Sanji later on. (I'm not covering these in spoilers because I haven't revealed anything.)
Hikaru no Go: No smoking.

So far Bleach is the only Shonen Jump title that has yet to wimp out on us.

When Viz started releasing all these series they were far more liberal and then there was a gradual shift because they wanted the magazine to be circulated in places like newstanRAB in grocery stores.

Yu-gi-oh's first seven volumes (the first printings anyway) actually had cursing and fitting dialogue.

But to give credit their translations for both One Piece and Naruto have done a 180. Remeraber when the early volumes for Naruto were so loosely translated that people would whine about it constantly. Well, these days we have names stated in Japanese order and Japanese terms used.

I don't really agree with Viz's edits but "eh". They haven't completely sold their souls with their entire manga line and they have been bending over backwarRAB to keep their SJ line as close to the Japanese releases so I take the good with the bad.

O-chan
